Need And Know-How: The Perfect Partnership In Creating Tools For Distance Students, Stephanie Wiegand, Dan Lawrence

University Libraries Publications

Impossible Mission: In two hours educate twenty doctoral students - distance students that will not be seen on campus again - on everything they need to know about the library and the technological skills needed to access all the resources they will require.

The Response: A partnership formed between need (the subject librarian) and know-how (the instruction librarian) to create a tool that can be used to

  1. create a sense of library and librarian for a distance learner, and
  2. inform the student of the ways and means of connecting to the resources and people and, ultimately, the information and resources …

Detection Avoidance, Chris William Sanchirico Nov 2005

Detection Avoidance, Chris William Sanchirico

ExpressO

In practice, the problem of law enforcement is half a matter of what the government does to catch violators and half a matter of what violators do to avoid getting caught. In the theory of law enforcement, however, although the state’s efforts at "detection" play a decisive role, offenders’ efforts at "detection avoidance" are largely ignored. Always problematic, this imbalance has become critical in recent years as episodes of corporate misconduct spur new interest in punishing process crimes like obstruction of justice and perjury. This article adds detection avoidance to the existing theoretical frame with an eye toward informing the …

Parental Ethnotheories Of Child Development: Looking Beyond Independence And Individualism In American Belief Systems, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Vibeke Aukrust, Asiye Kumru, Misuk Kim Nov 2005

Parental Ethnotheories Of Child Development: Looking Beyond Independence And Individualism In American Belief Systems, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Vibeke Aukrust, Asiye Kumru, Misuk Kim

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, the topic of child development in a cultural context has received a great deal of theoretical and empirical investigation. Investigators from the fields of indigenous and cultural psychology have argued that childhood is socially and historically constructed, rather than a universal process with a standard sequence of developmental stages or descriptions. As a result, many psychologists have become doubtful that any stage theory of cognitive or socialemotional development can be found to be valid for all times and places. In placing more theoretical emphasis on contextual processes, they define culture as a complex system of …

Adjusting Imperfect Data: Overview And Case Studies, Lars Vilhuber Nov 2005

Adjusting Imperfect Data: Overview And Case Studies, Lars Vilhuber

Lars Vilhuber

[Excerpt] In this chapter, instead of using the similarity in the cleaned datasets to investigate economic fundamentals, we focus on the differences in the underlying ‘dirty’ data. We describe two data elements that remain fundamentally different across countries, and the extent to which they differ. We then proceed to document some of the problems that affect longitudinally linked administrative data in general, and we describe some of the solutions analysts and statistical agencies have implemented, and some that they did not implement. In each case, we explain the reasons for and against implementing a particular adjustment, and explore, through a …

On Sport and Society

While I was on the road much of the last two weeks a number of things happened that caught my attention and now that I am back at my desk I would like to discuss a few of them. First, and indeed most curious, was the announcement from the NCAA that they would be offering financial rewards to those institutions whose student athletes actually perform as students. What a concept!

The International Legal Thought Of Carl Schmitt : Towards A Critique Of The Contemporary International Order, Alex D. Barder Nov 2005

The International Legal Thought Of Carl Schmitt : Towards A Critique Of The Contemporary International Order, Alex D. Barder

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the thesis is to develop a critique of current liberal conceptualizations of international order. In order to conduct this critique, this thesis revisits the arguments first put forth by the German legal and political theorist Carl Schmitt. Schmitt conceptualizes a tripartite unity between law, order, and place. This unity, established at the constituent moment of land-appropriation, forms a concrete nomos, which subsequently creates the contours of the legal and political order. The establishment of the concrete order is necessarily the construction of a territorial boundary that designates an inside and an outside of the polity. By speaking …
