The Psychologist As Novelist, J. Moreno Dec 2005

The Psychologist As Novelist, J. Moreno

J. Kelly Moreno

Exacting change in patients, students, supervisees, and other parties need not be limited to the classroom, consulting room, self-help books, or psychological texts. Authors may also educate and impact others through fiction. Specifically, the literary or commercial novel affords psychologists the opportunity to enlighten, empower, or otherwise touch the lives of those not normally privy to our expertise. To be sure, some mental health professionals have made the leap into fiction, but psychologists have been slow to follow, especially when compared with other professions (e.g., law, medicine). This article invites psychologists to apply their knowledge of human behavior and facility …

Conceptualizing And Measuring White House Staff Influence On Presidential Rhetoric, Justin Vaughn, José Villalobos Dec 2005

Conceptualizing And Measuring White House Staff Influence On Presidential Rhetoric, Justin Vaughn, José Villalobos

José D. Villalobos

Scholars have debated extensively the impact of presidential rhetoric on public opinion and congressional behavior, but have largely ignored the determinants of what the president actually says. This inattention is partly the result of the difficulty of acquiring systematic observations of presidential speech crafting. We devise a method of quantifying White House staff influence over the composition of rhetoric that captures the multistage negotiations between the president's speechwriters and his policy advisors and provides a framework for future studies on the determinants of presidential rhetoric. We employ our method to study influence over the writing of President George H. W. …

Design And The Management Of Multi-Institutional Research Collaborations, Elizabeth Corley, Craig Boardman, Barry Bozeman Dec 2005

Design And The Management Of Multi-Institutional Research Collaborations, Elizabeth Corley, Craig Boardman, Barry Bozeman

Craig Boardman

Over the past three decades, U.S. science and technology funding agencies have increasingly supported large-scale, centralized, block grant-based research projects that often span multiple disciplines and institutions. This trend has developed at such a rate that research focused on understanding the management of these new collaborative models has largely not kept pace. We use two case studies of large-scale, multi-disciplinary collaborations to develop an institutional framework that illuminates the relationships among (a) the epistemic norms of the disciplines represented in the collaboration, (b) the organizational structure of these collaborations, and (c) the inter-institutional collaboration success. The results of our case …

Diagnosing Disorderly Children: A Critique Of Behaviour Disorder Discourses, Valerie Harwood

Valerie Harwood

Based on the author's in-depth research with children diagnosed with behavioural difficulties, this book provides a thorough critique of today's practices, examining:

*The traditional analyses of behavioural disorders and the making of disorderly children *The influence of the 'expert knowledge' on behavioural disorders and its influence on schools, communities and new generations of teachers *The effect of discourses of mental disorder on children and young people *The increasing medicalisation of young children with drugs such as Ritalin.

This book offers an innovative and accessible analysis of a critical issue facing schools and society today, using Foucaultian notions to pose critical …

Fdi And Growth: What Causes What?, Abdur Chowdhury, George Mavrotas Dec 2005

Fdi And Growth: What Causes What?, Abdur Chowdhury, George Mavrotas

Abdur R. Chowdhury

This paper examines the causal relationship between FDI and economic growth by using an innovative econometric methodology to study the direction of causality between the two variables. We apply our methodology, based on the Toda-Yamamoto test for causality, to time-series data covering the period 1969–2000 for three developing countries, namely Chile, Malaysia and Thailand, all of them major recipients of FDI with a different history of macroeconomic episodes, policy regimes and growth patterns. Our empirical findings clearly suggest that it is GDP that causes FDI in the case of Chile and not vice versa, while for both Malaysia and Thailand, …

Interventions Intended To Reduce Pregnancy-Related Outcomes Among Adolescents., Lauren Scher, Rebecca Maynard, Stagner Matthew

REBECCA A MAYNARD

This review synthesizes the evidence on the effectiveness of programs aimed at reducing sexual risk-taking among teens. By including only rigorous randomized controlled trials that meet additional methodological criteria, it uses meta-analytic techniques to estimates the average effects that interventions have on reducing sexual experience, unprotected sexual activity, and pregnancy rates. It focuses on four main types of interventions: (1) one-time consultations; (2) sex education programs with an abstinence focus (and no contraceptive focus); (3) sex education programs with a contraception component; and (4) multi-component youth development programs. In total, this review presents findings based on over 37,000 youth who …

End-Of-Life Decision Making In Europe And Australia: A Physician Survey, Bregje Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Susanne Fischer, Colleen Cartwright, L Deliens, Guido Miccinesi, Michael Norup, Tore Nilstun, Agnes Van Der Heide, Gerrit Van Der Wal

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

Background: The frequencies with which physicians make different medical end-of-life decisions (ELDs) may differ between countries, but comparison between countries has been difficult owing to the use of dissimilar research methods. Methods: A written questionnaire was sent to a random sample of physicians from 9 specialties in 6 European countries and Australia to investigate possible differences in the frequencies of physicians' willingness to perform ELDs and to identify predicting factors. Response rates ranged from 39% to 68% (N = 10 139). Using hypothetical cases, physicians were asked whether they would (probably) make each of 4 ELDs. Results: In all the …
