Black Employment Opportunities: The Role Of Immigrant Job Concentrations, Jim Baird Jun 2006

Black Employment Opportunities: The Role Of Immigrant Job Concentrations, Jim Baird

Sociology Theses

Recent, post-1980, immigration patterns have had a dramatic effect on U.S. labor markets, leading to considerable debate about the impact of immigration on native-born black workers. This research examines immigrant and black labor markets, across metropolitan areas, using Public Use Microdata and Summary File data from Census 2000 to generate low, mid, and high classifications of immigrant and black occupations based on socio-economic index (SEI). Multivariate findings indicate that the effect of recent immigration on black labor market outcomes differs by occupational level. Competition for low-skilled jobs is identified for native-born blacks in low-level jobs while a “bump-up” effect is …

Framing Hillary Clinton: A Content Analysis Of The New York Times News Coverage Of The 2000 New York Senate Election, Amy Beth Busher

Communication Theses

This study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative content analyses to examine how news articles written by the New York Times portrayed Hillary Clinton during the 2000 New York Senate Election. The study combined research on political elections, gender stereotypes and an inductive analysis of coverage of the election to derive at four dominant frames. These frames, political activity, horserace, gender stereotype and traditional first lady were used to determine how the media responded to Hillary Clinton’s unprecedented decision to run for election. Results show that Hillary Clinton received more coverage based on her political activity than any other …

In Search Of Communication Satisfaction At The State Bar Of Georgia, Christopher Tyler Jones Jun 2006

In Search Of Communication Satisfaction At The State Bar Of Georgia, Christopher Tyler Jones

Communication Theses

It has long been established that “communication is of fundamental importance in the operation of all organizations, and a knowledge of the efficiency of the general communication system is vital to achieve high levels of organizational effectiveness” (Greenbaum, Clampitt, & Willihnganz, 1988, p. 245). With this in mind, over the past forty years many organizations have turned to communication audits to identify strategies to improve their organizations’ communication practices. One such organization is the State Bar of Georgia. Using Downs and Hazen’s (1977) Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire, this study assessed the health/effectiveness of the Bar’s formal and informal communication channels, identified …

The Timing And Causes Of Illite Formation In The Cretaceous Marias River Shale, Disturbed Belt, Montana, Stephen Gerard Osborn Jun 2006

The Timing And Causes Of Illite Formation In The Cretaceous Marias River Shale, Disturbed Belt, Montana, Stephen Gerard Osborn

Geosciences Theses

The clay mineralogy data and K-Ar ages of I/S measured in this study agree with previous work conducted within the Disturbed Belt (Hoffman, 1976) and show that diagenetic I/S formed quickly at several different places in response to thrust sheet burial during the Laramide orogeny. The averages of concordant age values for clay sub-fractions separated from three bentonites of Cretaceous and Jurassic depositional age increase from southeast (53.6 Ma) to northwest (56.7 Ma) along the trend of the Disturbed Belt. This northwestward increase of mean ages of I/S is consistent with a thrust sheet emplacement model for the Disturbed Belt …

Foraging Responses To Nutritional Pressures In Two Species Of Cercopithecines: Macaca Mulatta And Papio Ursinus, Gretchen A. Clymer Jun 2006

Foraging Responses To Nutritional Pressures In Two Species Of Cercopithecines: Macaca Mulatta And Papio Ursinus, Gretchen A. Clymer

Anthropology Theses

Papio ursinus are dietary generalists that exploit a diverse repertoire of food resources. This study explored the foraging strategies of a group of Papio ursinus and the foraging differences between subgroups classified by age and sex. Food resource preference, nutritional properties of food resources, and nutritional demands were examined to test the hypotheses that the foraging strategies exhibited by the subgroups would differ and that food selection is driven by nutritional demands. Adult females and juveniles were found to seek out food resources higher in proteins, while adult males were found to prefer food resources higher in carbohydrates. The findings …

Informal Development In Cairo, The View From Above: A Case Study Using Aerial Photo Interpretation To Examine Informal Housing In The Imbaba District Of Cairo, Stevan Bullard Jun 2006

Informal Development In Cairo, The View From Above: A Case Study Using Aerial Photo Interpretation To Examine Informal Housing In The Imbaba District Of Cairo, Stevan Bullard

Anthropology Theses

The goal of this study is to apply the extraordinarily rich set of historical cartographic and remote sensing data of Cairo, Egypt to the analysis of the problem of informal development in the twentieth century. Remote sensing of urban areas has been dominated in recent years by multispectral analysis of Landsat imagery. This restricts studies both temporally and in spatial resolution. In this study an aerial photo interpretation methodology is applied to images and maps spanning two centuries of Cairo’s history at a spatial resolution on the scale of individual buildings. From these techniques insights can be obtained of the …

Consumption Practices And Middle-Class Consciousness Among Socially Aware Shoppers In Atlanta, Desiree Lynn Tabor Jun 2006

Consumption Practices And Middle-Class Consciousness Among Socially Aware Shoppers In Atlanta, Desiree Lynn Tabor

Anthropology Theses

With the postmodern prevalence of shopping as both a recreational and subsistence activity, social class identity is increasingly constituted around access to the landscape of consumption. U.S. middle-class identity is normalized in commercial spaces and the exclusion of the lower-class from these spaces perpetuates wider social disparities. For socially aware members of the middle-class, distinction may be achieved by selectively shopping throughout the metropolitan area with the goal of influencing corporate practices. Yet this distinction is not without cost as middle-class shoppers are prime targets of identity marketing schemes and of the neoliberal regime’s construction of consent. Through 15 self-proclaimed …

Comparison Of High And Low Distraction For Pediatric Procedural Pain, Crystal Marie Stack Lim Jun 2006

Comparison Of High And Low Distraction For Pediatric Procedural Pain, Crystal Marie Stack Lim

Psychology Theses

Distraction is an effective pain management intervention and children’s coping styles are important to consider when designing interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine two movie distractions in children 3 to 11 years old receiving venipunctures and to evaluate the relations between the effectiveness of the interventions and coping styles. Results revealed no interaction and no main effects of condition or coping style. However, coping on caregiver-report of child pain approached significance. T-tests revealed significant differences between approach and avoidance coping styles, with children with an approach coping style experiencing significantly less pain compared to children with an …

Perception Of Emotion From Facial Expression And Affective Prosody, Noelle Turini Santorelli Jun 2006

Perception Of Emotion From Facial Expression And Affective Prosody, Noelle Turini Santorelli

Psychology Theses

Real-world perception of emotion results from the integration of multiple cues, most notably facial expression and affective prosody. The use of incongruent emotional stimuli presents an opportunity to study the interaction between sensory modalities. Thirty-seven participants were exposed to audio-visual stimuli (Robins & Schultz, 2004) including angry, fearful, happy, and neutral presentations. Eighty stimuli contain matching emotions and 240 contain incongruent emotional cues. Matching emotions elicited a significant number of correct responses for all four emotions. Sign tests indicated that for most incongruent conditions, participants demonstrated a bias towards the visual modality. Despite these findings, specific incongruent conditions did show …

The Relation Of Parental Depression To Posttraumatic Stress In Bosnian Youths: The Mediating Role Of Filial Responsibility, Brian Isakson Jun 2006

The Relation Of Parental Depression To Posttraumatic Stress In Bosnian Youths: The Mediating Role Of Filial Responsibility, Brian Isakson

Psychology Theses

This study examined the role of filial responsibility as a mediator between parental depression and posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) in Bosnian youths. The sample consisted of 145 6PthP-8PthP grade boys and girls and their parents. Unfairness and caregiving scales were combined in an interaction term to test the hypothesis. Parental depression significantly predicted parental report of adolescent PTSS but the filial responsibility variables did not significantly mediate the relationship between parental depression and PTSS. A post-hoc analysis examined the role of filial responsibility mediating the relationship between parental education level and PTSS. The interaction terms did not significantly mediate the …

Ethnic Conflict, Electoral Systems, And Power Sharing In Divided Societies, Sara Ann Miller Jun 2006

Ethnic Conflict, Electoral Systems, And Power Sharing In Divided Societies, Sara Ann Miller

Political Science Theses

This paper investigates the relationship between ethnic conflict, electoral systems, and power sharing in ethnically divided societies. The cases of Guyana, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Mauritius, and Trinidad and Tobago are considered. Electoral systems are denoted based on presidential versus parliamentary system, and on proportional representation versus majoritarian/plurality. The paper concludes that, while electoral systems are important, other factors like the power distribution between ethnic groups, and ensuring a non-zero-sum game may be as important.

Chemosensory And Steroid-Responsive Regions Of The Medial Amygdala Regulate Distinct Aspects Of Opposite-Sex Odor Preference In Male Syrian Hamsters (Mesocricetus Auratus), Pamela M. Maras Jun 2006

Chemosensory And Steroid-Responsive Regions Of The Medial Amygdala Regulate Distinct Aspects Of Opposite-Sex Odor Preference In Male Syrian Hamsters (Mesocricetus Auratus), Pamela M. Maras

Psychology Theses

In Syrian hamsters, sexual preference requires integration of chemosensory and steroid cues. Although data suggest that separate pathways within the brain process these two signals, the functional significance of this separation is not well understood. Within the medial amygdala, the anterior region (MEa) receives input from the olfactory bulbs, whereas the posterodorsal region (MEpd) is sensitive to steroid hormones. Lesions of either the MEa or MEpd eliminated preference to investigate female over male odors. Importantly, males with MEpd lesions displayed decreased attraction toward female odors, suggesting a decrease in sexual motivation. In contrast, males with MEa lesions displayed high levels …

Caste And The Court: Examining Judicial Selection Bias On Bench Assignments On The Indian Supreme Court, Shyam Krishnan Sriram Jun 2006

Caste And The Court: Examining Judicial Selection Bias On Bench Assignments On The Indian Supreme Court, Shyam Krishnan Sriram

Political Science Theses

This paper is a study on the effect of caste on bench assignments on the Indian Supreme Court. The objective was to determine whether the Chief Justices have historically assigned associate justices to benches based on their individual castes – Brahmin or Non-Brahmin – in order to tilt the bias of the Court in either an elitist (Brahmin) direction or a non-elitist (Non-Brahmin) direction. Based on a probability analysis of panel assignments, I created a new model to determine the extant of castebased judicial selection bias on the Indian Supreme Court. Using a random sample of cases from 1950 to …

The Relationship Of Implicit Family Process Rules To Adolescent Presentation Of Psychological Systems, Ian David Feinauer Jun 2006

The Relationship Of Implicit Family Process Rules To Adolescent Presentation Of Psychological Systems, Ian David Feinauer

Theses and Dissertations

Implicit family process rules refer to unspoken rules about family beliefs and expectations about communication, closeness, and organization and are an important dimension of family functioning that may have a powerful influence over adolescent psychological well being. This study focused on the relationship between implicit family process rules and adolescent psychological symptoms such as: Hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, and somatization. It was hypothesized that more facilitative implicit family process rules would be related to fewer adolescent psychological symptoms. In addition, a model was created that included theexogenousindependent variables of family status, (defined as intact-marriage or non-intact), treatment status (whether …

Book Review: Bleeding Red, Scott D. Peterson Jun 2006

Book Review: Bleeding Red, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Bleeding Red is one of (at least) three books that contain diaries from the 2004 season of the Boston Red Sox (the other two beingFaithful by Stephen King and Stewart O'Nan and Now I can Die in Peace by Bill Simmons). How, one might ask, were these authors fortunate enough to choose that particular year of the previous 86? This is more easily answered in the case of Simmons, who didn't start his diary until after the All-Star break, but does this mean we can look forward to diaries of the 2005 White Sox season, and are there scribes …
