Sony Labou Tansi : La Question Du Bas Matériel Et Corporel, Boniface Mongo-Mboussa Jun 2006

Sony Labou Tansi : La Question Du Bas Matériel Et Corporel, Boniface Mongo-Mboussa

According to Mikhail Bakhtin, the material and corporeal “lower stratum” includes the symbols that refer to the nether regions of the human body. By adopting this approach to writing in a dictatorship, Labou Tansi most likely wanted to protect his work and himself from possible reprisals by his country’s political authorities. More importantly, however, this move constitutes a strategy of subversion of Marxist ideology: the focus on the material and corporal “lower stratum” (indistinguishable from the carnivalesque) is a form of resistance to what Bakhtin calls official discourse, and becomes a way of reclaiming the writer’s literary autonomy.

De L’Économie Politique À L’Économie De La Différence Corporelle. Représentations Du Spectacle Sportif Dans L’Imaginaire De La Jeunesse Africaine, Jean Sob Jun 2006

De L’Économie Politique À L’Économie De La Différence Corporelle. Représentations Du Spectacle Sportif Dans L’Imaginaire De La Jeunesse Africaine, Jean Sob

Today’s African youth have chosen the economy of corporal performance over political economy, as a way of reconquering the dignity that was lost to them lost in the collapse of African countries. The undeniable success of African athletes all over the world has given rise to diverse representations in people’s imaginations: while young Africans consider sports to be a unique way of gaining both national and international recognition, a particular strain of racism in Western countries would use black athletes to procure certain warm and reassuring emotions for “civilized” populations frozen into the permafrost of consumer society.

The Changing Face Of Conservation: Commodification, Privatisation And The Free Market, Sharon Beder Jun 2006

The Changing Face Of Conservation: Commodification, Privatisation And The Free Market, Sharon Beder

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Environmentalists in the late 1960s and 1970s argued that the exponential growth of populations and industrial activity could not be sustained without seriously depleting the planet’s resources and overloading the planet’s ability to deal with pollution and waste materials. They argued that new technologies and industrial products, such as pesticides and plastics, also threatened the environment. Following the protest mood of the times, they did not hesitate to blame industry, western culture, economic growth and technology for environmental problems. They questioned western paradigms of development and industrialisation, and criticising the inequitable distribution of wealth and resource use.

Diplomacy Interrupted?: Macmahon Ball, Evatt And Labor’S Policies In Occupied Japan, Christine M. De Matos Jun 2006

Diplomacy Interrupted?: Macmahon Ball, Evatt And Labor’S Policies In Occupied Japan, Christine M. De Matos

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Historiography on the Australian political and diplomatic role in the Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952) gives disproportionate attention to the meetings between the Australian Minister for External Affairs, H.V. Evatt, and the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in Japan (SCAP), General Douglas MacArthur, in Tokyo during 1947. These meetings are then linked to the subsequent resignation from the Allied Council for Japan (ACJ) of William Macmahon Ball, an Australian academic representing the British Commonwealth, and used to justify the claim that Australian policy towards Occupied Japan was unpredictable and ad hoc. This attention to Ball’s resignation has distorted analysis …

Empirically And Clinically Useful Decision Making In Psychotherapy: Differential Predictions With Treatment Response Models, Wolfgang Lutz, Stephen M. Saunders, Scott C. Leon, Zoran Martinovich, Joachim Kosfelder, Dietmar Schulte, Klaus Grawe, Sven Tholen Jun 2006

Empirically And Clinically Useful Decision Making In Psychotherapy: Differential Predictions With Treatment Response Models, Wolfgang Lutz, Stephen M. Saunders, Scott C. Leon, Zoran Martinovich, Joachim Kosfelder, Dietmar Schulte, Klaus Grawe, Sven Tholen

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

In the delivery of clinical services, outcomes monitoring (i.e., repeated assessments of a patient's response to treatment) can be used to support clinical decision making (i.e., recurrent revisions of outcome expectations on the basis of that response). Outcomes monitoring can be particularly useful in the context of established practice research networks. This article presents a strategy to disaggregate patients into homogeneous subgroups to generate optimal expected treatment response profiles, which can be used to predict and track the progress of patients in different treatment modalities. The study was based on data from 618 diagnostically diverse patients treated with either a …

Xiaoyuan Wang Jun 2006

Xiaoyuan Wang

Theses & Dissertations

Captain Westmacott's Drawing Book - A Colonial Oddity, Michael K. Organ Jun 2006

Captain Westmacott's Drawing Book - A Colonial Oddity, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The annals of New Zealand art from the colonial period are scattered with unattributed works and those by artists about whom precious little in known. The unravelling of this jigsaw is left to art historians, working away quietly in archives, libraries and art museums. One as yet unsolved riddle concerns Captain Robert Marsh Westmacott. In 1929 art dealer and expatriate Kiwi Rex Nan Kivell purchased at auction from the Museum Book Store, London, a drawing book containing sixteen New Zealand topographic views and figure studies. Roughly dated at around 1840, they were part of the estate of the late Captain …

Labour Market Reforms And Polarization In Korea, K. H., Raymond Chan Jun 2006

Labour Market Reforms And Polarization In Korea, K. H., Raymond Chan

CAPS Working Paper Series

From the early 1990s the South Korean government launched a series of structural reforms to liberalize and deregulate the economy and labour market, in line with its globalization strategy. Particularly after the financial crisis, flexible labour market reform was one of the major initiatives to keep the Korean economy competitive in the global market. This paper describes the rationale for flexible labour market reforms in Korea from the early 1990s, evaluates their impacts on labour market polarization, and assesses the policy responses adopted by Kim Dae-jung and the current Roh Moo-hyun governments. It is argued that the flexible labour market …

Aarp Online Portrayal Of Social Security: Engaging Aging Baby Boomers Through Interaction, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz Jun 2006

Aarp Online Portrayal Of Social Security: Engaging Aging Baby Boomers Through Interaction, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz

Communication Faculty Publications

Although baby boomers were not the sole focus of the American Association of Retired Persons' (AARP) website content on the issue of Social Security reform, their interests were addressed in a variety of ways. AARP provided information, position statements, a live chat forum, and message boards. Additionally, AARP had a partnership with the Rock the Vote website. It was unexpected that AARP would be so interested in younger people and in convincing them about their generation's need to support Social Security as it currently exists. It may be that as the baby boom generation enters retirement, AARP will become increasingly …
