Women’S Access To Credit In Sub-Saharan Africa: Sudan, Michael Kevane, Endre Stiansen May 2006

Women’S Access To Credit In Sub-Saharan Africa: Sudan, Michael Kevane, Endre Stiansen

Economics

Women in Sudan have been largely excluded from formal financial institutions of the Anglo-Egyptian and independent Sudan, even as they have demonstrated the ability and desire to profit from financial transactions. The exclusion is not based on legal criteria, but rather on informal practices that control institutions of the formal sector. However, women –particularly in urban areas of northern Sudan – have access to informal financial institutions, and in recent years there have been some attempts by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to offer financial services, especially loans at discounts, to women

The Importance Of Having Data-Sets., Ronald Dekker May 2006

The Importance Of Having Data-Sets., Ronald Dekker

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Much scientific research is based on the gathering and analysis of measurement data. Scientific data-sets are, at least, intermediate results in many scientific research projects. For some time data-sets weren’t even published and even if they were published it was mostly as a (not re-usable) by-product of the publication. But an interesting phenomenon might be observed here: data-sets (often in combination with models and parameters) are becoming more important themselves and can sometimes be seen as the primary intellectual output of the research. Publishing and preserving data-sets should therefore seriously be considered. This will especially be the case if the …

Think Systematically, Act Strategically: Sustainable Development Of Information Literacy In The Broader Context Of Students' Learning., Judith Peacock

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A challenge for educators is to fuse the learning of information literacy to an academic education in such a way that the outcome is systematic and sustainable learning for students. This challenge can be answered through long-term commitment to information literacy education bound to organisation-wide, renewable strategic planning and driven through systemic reform. This paper explores the process of reforming information literacy education in an academic environment, drawing on the experiences of one Australian university which has undertaken the implementation of a strategic, systemic approach to information literacy learning and teaching.

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Based on a series of independent studies conducted by Dr. Anthony Breitzman of 1790 Analytics, IEEE has learned that granted patents cite scientific and the technical literature found in journal articles, conference papers and industry standards. Technological Convergance For Access To Hardcopy And Softcopy Collections By Means Of The Unibibliweb Portal: The Experience Of Cruesp/Libraries Consortium., Adriana Cybele Ferrari, Luiz Atílio Vicentini, Margaret Alves Antunes

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Consortium CRUESP/Libraries formed by the three São Paulo State Universities Library System, USP, UNESP, and UNICAMP, seeks to offer specialized services and products to the academic community. With the expanding of the available information sources to the Universities, researchers need to visit various sites from diverse information providers, possessing different access interfaces. This demands time for the user to know these interfaces, which are not always user-friendly, and utilize the same search terms numerous times. With the technological advance it has become evident the possibility of the creation of a unified search interface, using the international communication protocols such …

Embedding Research And Learning In Libraries., William R. Maes

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The theme of this conference is “Embedding Libraries in Research and Learning.” While this is critical within the context of the new technologies and new service expectations of scholars and students it is also important that research and learning remain embedded in libraries if they are to be an integral part of the scholarly fabric of our institutions. With continuing economic pressures on scholarly institutions and the desire to use the new technologies to change established and expensive processes and facilities, the threat to the physical academic library has perhaps never been greater This paper discusses why the physical library …

In the midst of a start-up program, the librarians at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar were challenged to test new models of active participation while demonstrating positive outcomes. This paper describes the setting, methods, and outcomes associated with having librarians attend courses as active members in an evolving learning environment. Interactions with faculty and students will be analyzed to assess whether course attendance benefits professional relationships in a way that positively impacts student learning. In parallel, an examination of assessment measures for determining value of …
