Redrawing The Color Line : A Case Study Of The Alliance Of Minority Chambers Of Commerce In Portland, Oregon, Francisca Inez Trujillo-Dalbey

Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on a minority coalition formed in 2002 to secure municipal parking lot contracts in the City of Portland, Oregon. It is grounded in Bates and Howell's (1998) theory of barriers to minority entrepreneurship. The minority group's actions are applied to Butler (1991), Prabhu (1999), and Dees' (2001) theory of social entrepreneurship. The formation of the coalition provides empirical support for Allport (195411979) and Pettigrew's (1998) positive intergroup contact theory.

The creation of minority group coalitions for community economic development purposes, using the chamber of commerce structure, adds to the community economic development literature. Further, the intercultural communication …

Female Hormonal Influences On Stress- And Drug-Induced Reinstatement Of Extinguished Amphetamine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference, Melissa Elaine Bleile

Dissertations

One Animal paradigm used to study addiction is conditioned place preference. CPP is achieved when an animal develops a preference for environmental stimuli previously paired with subjective effects of a rewarding drug. Women may experience greater drug sensitivity than men, most likely due to estrogen levels. The purpose of this experiment was to assess the effects of female sex hormones on drug sensitivity and their interaction with the primary factors causing relapse, stress or drug re-exposure. Female rats were ovariectomized and received replacement hormones to control circulating hormone levels. These groups of animals were tested for amphetamine (AMPH)-induced CPP and …

Building Better Working Relationships Between High School Library Media Specialists And School Technology Coordinators, Jennifer Lynn Sedlock

Theses and Dissertations

The impetus for this study came from numerous conversations regarding the frustrations colleagues had when communicating with their technology coordinators and/or technology services. In many ways, technology and technology-integration within school media centers are just as important these days as traditional curriculum and teachings. Embracing this fact is essential to a successful school library media program, especially those programs whose main goal is to produce the next generation of information-literate, lifelong learners. By analyzing the results and open-ended responses of a survey presented to New Jersey high school library media specialists, guidelines were proposed on how to establish and maintain …

Violence From Self-Love: Narcissism And Aggression In The Face Of Ego Threat, Ashley Girgis May 2006

Violence From Self-Love: Narcissism And Aggression In The Face Of Ego Threat, Ashley Girgis

Psychology Honors Theses

The current study examines the relationship between narcissism and aggression. The link between narcissistic personalities and heightened aggressive response to ego threat has been substantiated in the literature (Twenge & Campbell, 2003), but it is unclear whether this response is driven by a self-repairing mechanism to restore damaged self-esteem or by an ego-promoting mechanism to vent frustration at not being admired. These mechanisms were tested by giving narcissists either mistaken public ego threats or negative feedback. Results replicate the link between narcissism and aggression but do not point to one mechanism over the other; additional data, however, provide information about …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The excavations at Hrísheimar in Mývatnssveit in N Iceland are producing a very large archaeofauna, which can now be dated through both radiocarbon and two major volcanic tephra layers (the Landnám tephra of ca AD 871 and the Veiðivötn 930 tephra). While much of the site has been destroyed by wind erosion, substantial midden deposits (which overly earlier structures in some cases) still remain along the NE edge of the site area. While excavation is ongoing and only a small portion of the very substantial archaeofauna has been analyzed so far, it may be useful to present an interim working …

The Cinematic Effect Of Love Addiction On Metaphorical Preferences, Taylor Ann Daniel May 2006

The Cinematic Effect Of Love Addiction On Metaphorical Preferences, Taylor Ann Daniel

Honors Theses

The cinematic effects of Fatal Attraction, a negative depiction of love addiction, and Wuthering Heights, a positive depiction of love addiction, were used to test their effect on students' metaphorical love preferences. Eight of Robert Sternberg's love metaphors were selected and, based on participants' metaphorical choices, an unhealthy and healthy group were created. It was hypothesized that both the unhealthy and healthy group would be unaffected after watching Fatal Attraction, but that Wuthering Heights would affect a change in the healthy group towards more unhealthy, addictive metaphors, while not affecting a change in the unhealthy group. The …
