The Impact Of New Deal Expenditures On Mobility During The Great Depression, Price V. Fishback, William C. Horrace, Shawn Kantor Apr 2006

The Impact Of New Deal Expenditures On Mobility During The Great Depression, Price V. Fishback, William C. Horrace, Shawn Kantor

Economics - All Scholarship

Using county-level data on federal New Deal expenditures on public works and relief and Agricultural Adjustment Administration payments to farmers, this paper empirically examines the New Deals impact on inter-county migration from 1930 to 1940. We construct a net-migration measure for each county as the difference between the Censuss reported population change from 1930 to 1940 and the natural increase in population (births minus infant deaths minus non-infant deaths) over the same period. Our empirical approach accounts for both the simultaneity between New Deal allocations and migration and the geographic spillovers that likely resulted when economic activity in one county …

2001 National Lacrosse Finalist Plaque, Devin J. Hewitt Apr 2006

2001 National Lacrosse Finalist Plaque, Devin J. Hewitt

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

Amidst a dusty trophy case in Bream Athletic Center sits a small plaque. It has a gold lacrosse stick and simply states: “2001 National Lacrosse Finalist”. Most people would walk by and never even notice the plaque, and if they did they probably wouldn’t think twice about it. However, upon delving into the history of the plaque I found a story of intense on-and-off-the field rivalries, the emergence of a national power, players learning to come together to overcome adversity, the culmination of years of building, and eventual heartbreak. Interface Newsletter

Information represents the currency that drives global connections. Librarians and information professionals stand at the gateway of much of the world’s growing knowledge base. They ensure information access amidst evolving metadata standards, and determine how information systems are designed and built (information architecture), how information flows (collection development), through what channels (accessibility), and how people use that information (usability).

Our School understands that in today’s globally connected culture it is vital to both model and teach the importance of information as a phenomenon that bridges gaps and illustrates commonality between disciplines and practices.

Intellectual Scaffolding: On Peter Dahlgren's Theorization Of Television And The Public Sphere, Minna Aslama Apr 2006

Intellectual Scaffolding: On Peter Dahlgren's Theorization Of Television And The Public Sphere, Minna Aslama

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

In this working paper, my goal is to revisit Habermasian public sphere theory by first discussing its strengths and weaknesses in the context of today’s (western European) television landscape. I then move on to exploring one reconceptualization of television as a public sphere, that of the Swedish scholar Peter Dahlgren (1995 & 2005). Finally, I elaborate and further develop those key aspects of Dahlgren’s model that I consider particularly relevant for rethinking the public sphere of today.

Perceived Smoking Environment And Smoking Initiation Among Multi-Ethnic Urban Girls, Tracy R. Nichols, Amanda Birnbaum, Sara Birnel, Gilbert J. Botvin

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose

To examine associations between the perceived smoking environment and smoking initiation among urban multi-ethnic adolescent girls in New York City.

Methods

Self-report surveys completed in grades 7, 8, and 9 assessed girls’ (n = 858) smoking initiation, and perceived smoking environment (family smoking, friends’ smoking, smoking norms, and cigarette availability). Carbon monoxide breath samples were collected from girls using a variation of the bogus pipeline procedure.

Results

Differences were found in smoking prevalence with white girls reporting the highest prevalence of smoking at baseline and the greatest increase in smoking prevalence from seventh to eighth grade. Black girls reported …

Mexico's Labor Market : The Importance Of Education - Occupation Matching On Wages And Productivity In Developing Countries, Michael A. Quinn, Stephen Rubb Apr 2006

Mexico's Labor Market : The Importance Of Education - Occupation Matching On Wages And Productivity In Developing Countries, Michael A. Quinn, Stephen Rubb

Economics Faculty Publications

The positive impact of education on earnings , wages, economic growth is well documented, however the issue of education - occupation matching in developing countries has been largely ignored. Since workers 'level of schooling and their occupations ' required level of education both affect wages , policy makers may find it useful to note if such mismatch exist, if they impact wages, and if they can be avoided. Empirical results from Mexico suggest that in order to obtain the maximum economic benefits from increases in educational attainment levels, a developing country needs to take steps to assure increases in occupational …
