Review Of Weather Extremes Of The West By Tye W. Parzybok, John Nielsen-Gammon
Review Of Weather Extremes Of The West By Tye W. Parzybok, John Nielsen-Gammon
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
Some books can serve multiple purposes. Weather Extremes of the West is one of them- well suited for use as a resource for middle school and high school students, as a good read for any self-proclaimed weather nut or person fascinated by the weather, and as a bathroom book fit for sporadic bursts of reading spread out over several months.

Review Of Wildflowers Of Montana By Donald Anthony Schiemann, Clayton Mccracken
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
Wildflowers of Montana is in the stack of books I take on botanizing expeditions. At bedtime one or two pages read as I fall asleep ends the day nicely. The book is well designed as a quick reference to 350 of Montana's best flowering plants.
Review Of Biological Control Of Invasive Plants In The United States Edited By Eric M. Coombs, Janet K. Clark, Gary L. Piper, And Alfred F. Cofrancesco, Jr., Andrew Norton
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
As pointed out in the volume's introduction, biological weed control is an increasingly important tool for managing invasive plants on public and private lands at a time when this strategy is under increasing scrutiny over real (and perceived) threats to native pants and ecosystems. The volume updates and expands upon Biological Control of Weeds in the West (1996) and should be considered an essential reference for policy makers, land managers, students, and researchers involved with biological weed control throughout North America.

Reducing Smooth Sumac Dominance In Native Tallgrass Prairie, Susan Tunnell, James L. Stubbendieck, Sal Palazzolo, Robert Masters
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
Smooth sumac (Rhus glabra L.) is a resprouting shrub native to the tallgrass prairie region that increases in density without an active disturbance regime. Our objective was to use prescribed fire and herbicides to decrease smooth sumac density as a strategy to improve a degraded tall grass prairie remnant. In two separate experiments repeated in space and time, we used prescribed fire in combination with herbicides at various rates and two application methods to develop an effective management scheme for reducing smooth sumac. We used a randomized complete block design with 13 herbicide treatments and a control with three …

The Economic Inefficiency Of Title Ix, Alicia Irons
The Economic Inefficiency Of Title Ix, Alicia Irons
Major Themes in Economics
Title IX of the Educational Amendment Act of 1972 has expanded the opportunity for women in athletics. At the same time, it has been detrimental to men’s athletics. The elimination of men’s teams is analyzed through a theoretical model and empirical evidence. College athletic departments have used an inefficient method to comply with Title IX because they use the method the NCAA encourages. The NCAA needs to reevaluate the methods that it has encouraged and improvements should be made to Title IX.
Should Corporate Farming Be Limited In The United States?: An Economic Perspective, Nathan Wittmaack
Should Corporate Farming Be Limited In The United States?: An Economic Perspective, Nathan Wittmaack
Major Themes in Economics
Farming in the United States has changed drastically over the last century. Technology has improved farmers’ ability to produce. Economies of scale available from new technology have led to restructuring in the agricultural industry. Fewer and larger farms are now the norm. As technology improved, corporations began to increase activity in agricultural sectors. Sectors such as livestock are more susceptible to corporate farming. Many Americans are opposed to corporate farming because of the perceived negative effects on rural America. Limiting corporate farming, though, is not a good way to protect rural America. Corporate farming leads to a more efficient industry …

Language Barriers To Health Care Access Among Medicare Beneficiaries, Ninez A. Ponce, Leighton C. Ku, William E. Cunningham, E. Richard Brown
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
This study examined language barriers to health care access among a population-based sample of Medicare seniors in California in 2001 and 2003. Results indicate that Medicare beneficiaries with limited English proficiency (LEP) had less access to a usual source of care and were less likely to receive preventive cancer screening tests. LEP Medicare beneficiaries who also were covered by Medicaid tended to fare better than those without Medicaid. This could be due to federal civil rights rules that require Medicaid health care providers to offer free language assistance, but exclude from these requirements physicians who provide only Medicare services. Findings …

The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
Sociologists have documented how important place is in people’s lives. For example, certain places are associated with various emotions, such as triumph, sadness, fear, and contentment (Gieryn 2000). We also know that as people live in a place for more time, they become more attached to it (e.g., Herting et al 1997). Other scholars have shown that the bonds people create between themselves and certain geographic places reframe how certain sites are understood both by those involved and by outsiders (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). These geographic-human bonds shape how people identify themselves and others, and how they understand the issues …
Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz
Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz
Center for Applied Economics
Most people associate air pollution with automobiles and factories. But air pollution has been a part of human existence for thousands of years, and accounts of noxious urban air go back to ancient times. The Roman statesman Seneca bemoaned, “the stink, soot, and heavy air” of Rome in 61 AD.1 London has suffered from air pollution since the Middle Ages, when coal became a common fuel in smithies and lime burners. The problem was bad enough that King Edward I in 1285 created a commission to improve the city’s air quality.2
