Spatial Analysis Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Dodge County, Wisconsin, Jacob Andrew Maas Apr 2006

Spatial Analysis Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Dodge County, Wisconsin, Jacob Andrew Maas

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research was to identify the primary variables that lead to high nitrate levels in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Trend surface analysis was used to identify which land use/land cover and aquifer characteristics are responsible for increased nitrate levels. A kriging model with residuals from the trend surface analysis, were then applied to estimate the spatial distribution of nitrate levels in the entire study area. Cross-validation was conducted to assess the uncertainty of the kriging model in the analysis.

The result from the trend surface analysis showed that, soil depth to bedrock, agriculture, urban, barren and shrub land, …

Evaluating American Correctional Association Accreditation Of Adult Correctional Institutions, David Ralphs

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses

This research study focuses on the impact that accreditation by the American Correctional Association has on violence, crowding, and educational and counseling offerings in adult correctional facilities. Data from the American Correctional Association and the 1995 and 2000 Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities are studied by joining databases and performing statistical analysis on the resulting data. The resulting analysis reveals negative relationships between ACA accreditation and violence and positive relationships between ACA Accreditation and educational and counseling program offerings in adult correctional institutions.

Promoting Federal Depository Libraries: Improving Public Access To U.S. Government Information, Newkirk Barnes Apr 2006

Promoting Federal Depository Libraries: Improving Public Access To U.S. Government Information, Newkirk Barnes

The Southeastern Librarian

Since its creation in 1860, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has supplied the nation’s Congress, federal agencies, and citizenry with the information they need to carry out their daily activities (Morehead 1999, 15). Through its Superintendent of Documents programs, the GPO produces and disseminates the largest volume of U.S. government publications in the world (U.S. Government Printing Office 2003).

The most widely publicized of the Superintendent of Documents programs is the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). Authorized by Title 44 of the United States Code, the FDLP provides the American public with information resources from the legislative, executive and …

Information And Referral Services: A Brief History, Jodi Poe Apr 2006

Information And Referral Services: A Brief History, Jodi Poe

The Southeastern Librarian

What is information and referral (I&R) service? The most widely accepted definition of I&R is “the active process of linking a person with a need or problem with a service which will meet the need or solve the problem.” For example, this type of service would provide detailed information, including contact information, mailing address, telephone number, etc., about where a person could go to receive childhood immunizations. There are three basic requirements of an I&R service: creation of a resource file, distribution of the information, and updating the file. I&R services were originally created to serve the disadvantaged members of …

Reference Use Statistics: Statistical Sampling Method Works (University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga), Sarla R. Murgai Apr 2006

Reference Use Statistics: Statistical Sampling Method Works (University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga), Sarla R. Murgai

The Southeastern Librarian

Most reference librarians would like reference statistics to reflect all aspects of reference work. They would also like the task of keeping statistics to be simple. However, there is nothing simple about reference service. While spending more and more time helping individual students at their workstations, away from the reference desk, reference librarians still have to remember to mark statistics when they return to the reference desk. They realize that detailed information as to the type of questions asked at the desk would be helpful in guiding librarians while providing user instruction. Such details would also provide information on the …

Promoting Your School Library’S Services With An E-Mail Newsletter, Roxanne M. Spencer

The Southeastern Librarian

In this age of competing services and resources, school libraries constantly look for ways to promote their services and engender excitement among students. From book fairs to literature circles to guest lecturers, the evolving school library media center must continually showcase its services. Librarians have often been hesitant to promote their services, but necessity has forced us all to become more marketing oriented. The library newsletter offers one inexpensive, non-aggressive, but effective way to reach out to fellow teachers, administrators, and students and parents.

The Poor And Homeless: An Opportunity For Libraries To Serve, Sheila Ayers Apr 2006

The Poor And Homeless: An Opportunity For Libraries To Serve, Sheila Ayers

The Southeastern Librarian

Serving the poor and homeless presents one of the greatest challenges America’s public libraries have ever faced. With their numbers increasing every year the poor and homeless need a path out of poverty and help to ease the pain along the way. Public libraries offer new worlds to the poor by providing information in a wide variety of different forms on every subject imaginable. The information is an opportunity which opens the door to other opportunities and can change or save lives. Librarians, as keepers of the keys of knowledge, have an obligation to spread information like a balm over …

Reshaping The World Of Scholarly Communication—Open Access And The Free Online Scholarship Movement: Open Access Statements, Proposals, Declarations, Principles, Strategies, Organizations, Projects, Campaigns, Initiatives, And Related Items—A Webliography, Paul G. Haschak, Linus A. Sims Apr 2006

Sims

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

[Introduction]

Since World War II, we have seen a proliferation of scholarly materials. In particular, there has been a tremendous growth in the size and cost of the primary journal literature.

With prices continuing to rise at a rate greater than the general price index, the current scholarly communication system is becoming more and more unaffordable.

The rise in the cost of serial subscriptions has forced academic libraries over the last several decades to cancel existing serial titles, add fewer and fewer new serial titles, and buy fewer and fewer books.

In is apparent, that the crisis in the scholarly …

Black Power In Green And White: Integration And Black Protest In Michigan State University Football, 1947-1972, John Matthew Smith Apr 2006

Black Power In Green And White: Integration And Black Protest In Michigan State University Football, 1947-1972, John Matthew Smith

Masters Theses

While southern college football teams remained all white until the late 1960s and early 1970s, Michigan State University head football coach Duffy Daugherty formed championship teams in 1965 and 1966 by recruiting the best southern black players. While coaches in the North recruited black athletes and played them regularly by the mid-1950s, no other coach took the risks Daugherty did to integrate his teams. Duffy Daugherty's path-breaking teams broke all the rules of integrated competition and forced southern schools to reconsider their stance on segregated college football.

The ground breaking integration of black athletes in the mid-1950s and 1960s under …

A Market Analysis Of Consumer Behavior For Companies In A Self-Insurance Group, Bismarck J. Manes

Masters Theses

This study examined variables that influenced the purchase of costly safety equipment by small business owners. Participants were 21 members of a self-insurance group (SIG) comprised of auto recyclers. Eight sets of variables were examined: (a) marketing tools (video, graphic safety data, and price discount), (b) business demographics, (c) worker’s compensation history, (d) personal history, (e) available technology, (f) safety management practices, (g) safety products purchased in the past, and (h) interest in safety services provided by the SIG. Purchasers (N=7) and nonpurchasers (N=14) were divided into groups, and independent t-tests were calculated for each variable. Only one of 45 …

Dance Club Culture, Amy M. Iseler Apr 2006

Dance Club Culture, Amy M. Iseler

Masters Theses

My research examines the dance club culture in a mid-sized Northwestern city. I explore this subject through participant observation and interviews with dance club patrons. The issues I address in my research include dance club music, music videos, alcohol, clothing, sexual behavior, non-verbal communication and the dance club environment. The purpose of this Masters Thesis is to determine whether dance club culture perpetuates sexist attitudes and beliefs within its patrons.

This original piece of research is based in existing literature which informs the individual elements of the dance club culture. The experiences of dance club patrons demonstrate how these elements …

Sexist Humor And Willingness To Discrimination Against Women, Christie M. Fitzgerald Apr 2006

Sexist Humor And Willingness To Discrimination Against Women, Christie M. Fitzgerald

Masters Theses

Research has shown that exposure to sexist humor increases tolerance of sexist events, particularly for people high in hostile sexism-antagonism toward women (Glick & Fiske, 1996). The present experiment extends those findings by examining the effects of exposure to sexist humor on anticipated behavior. Two studies were designed to examine the behavioral consequences of exposure to sexist humor. In Study 1, participants were exposed to either sexist jokes, sexist statements, or neutral jokes, and then asked to donate money to either a women's organization or a men's organization. In Study 2, participants were exposed to either sexist jokes or …

Does Diving Limit Brain Size In Cetaceans?, Lori Marino, Daniel Sol, Kristen Toren, Louis Lefebvre Apr 2006

Does Diving Limit Brain Size In Cetaceans?, Lori Marino, Daniel Sol, Kristen Toren, Louis Lefebvre

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

We test the longstanding hypothesis, known as the dive constraint hypothesis, that the oxygenation demands of diving pose a constraint on aquatic mammal brain size.Using a sample of 23 cetacean species we examine the relationship among six different measures of relative brain size, body size, and maximum diving duration. Unlike previous tests we include body size as a covariate and perform independent contrast analyses to control for phylogeny. We show that diving does not limit brain size in cetaceans and therefore provide no support for the dive constraint hypothesis. Instead, body size is the main predictor of maximum diving duration …

Improving The Amber Alert System: Psychology Research & Policy Recommendation, Monica K. Miller, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard Apr 2006

Improving The Amber Alert System: Psychology Research & Policy Recommendation, Monica K. Miller, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

When lawmakers implemented the AMBER Alert System, they initiated a system designed to save the lives of missing children. However, the system might not be working as well as possible. If psychological research on related areas (e.g., memory and witness identification) extends to AMBER Alerts, it is likely that the system can be improved.

Section II of this article begins with a description and history of the AMBER Alert System, followed by a brief discussion of the effectiveness of the system. Section III continues with a review of numerous psycho logical studies that have important implications when applied to the …

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka Apr 2006

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

In recent years, bison products have been incorporated into the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). This paper examines the factors leading up to this particular development and the structural problems that have yet to be resolved within the program. Altogether, the findings illustrate that cultural traditions, health problems, and economic concerns instigated the federal government to embark upon this new policy. Unfortunately, while the program has responded to tribal demands in certain respects, it has not resolved underlying structural inequalities between tribal and nontribal communities. In particular, the FDPIR does not acknowledge the problematic nature of production-consumption networks …

Grazing And Military Vehicle Effects On Grassland Soils And Vegetation, John A. Guretzky, Alan Anderson, Jeffrey Fehmi Apr 2006

Grazing And Military Vehicle Effects On Grassland Soils And Vegetation, John A. Guretzky, Alan Anderson, Jeffrey Fehmi

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Vehicle training, a common disturbance of military lands, is part of a suite of land uses that also includes cattle grazing. Yet, no studies have examined their interaction. Our objective was to review the effects of vehicle training and grazing on grassland soils and vegetation and develop a state-and-transition model that incorporates grazing and training for Fort Hood, TX. Both grazing and training can cause soil compaction and vegetation disturbance, altering hydrology and increasing erosion. While the effects of grazing largely depend on stocking rate, vehicle training causes greater disturbance when wet soils are driven on, when vehicles are turned …

Review Of One House: The Unicameral's Progressive Vision For Nebraska By Charlyne Berens, James Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

This is a book that needed to be written-a valuable, though flawed, addition to the literature on Nebraska's unique legislative body. It is the first addition to research on the Nebraska Legislature in some time and presents a new approach to the subject: has the Unicameral lived up to the promises of its founders? The answer is, by and large, yes.

Review Of On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes Of North America By Michael Forsberg, Dale Hjertaas Apr 2006

Review Of On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes Of North America By Michael Forsberg, Dale Hjertaas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Michael Forsberg is a gifted photographer. I opened this book for a quick look, saw the first photograph, a stunning full-page photo of a dancing Sandhill crane leaping for the sky, and did not put the book down until I had looked at everyone of its 154 photographs. Particularly beautiful is a two-page photograph silhouetting a dozen Sandhill cranes against a golden sky, their legs extended, preparing to land at a roost along the Platte. Through the photographs Forsberg shows us the places where cranes live and gives us a look into their lives, capturing copulation, hatching, chick rearing, feeding, …

Review Of Amphibian Declines: The Conservation Status Of United States Species Edited By Michael Lanoo, William Duellman Apr 2006

Review Of Amphibian Declines: The Conservation Status Of United States Species Edited By Michael Lanoo, William Duellman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Since 1989, biologists and conservationists have become concerned about the worldwide decline of amphibians, especially frogs. What species are declining? Where? Why? What can we do about it? These questions, easy to ask but difficult to answer, are broadly addressed in this thick tome containing the contributions of 215 individuals, many of whom have spent years gathering information pertinent to their discussions. The book is divided into two major parts-"Conservation Essays" and "Species Accounts." In the former are essays on declines, causes, conservation, education, surveys, and monitoring. Each species account of an amphibian known from the United States has sections …

Bart To Silicon Valley—What’S Next? Mti Report F-05-01, Mineta Transportation Institute Apr 2006

Bart To Silicon Valley—What’S Next? Mti Report F-05-01, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

Extending the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to the Silicon Valley from Alameda County is the greatest public works challenge facing Santa Clara County. Funding for the project diminished with the economic downturn, forcing the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to cut existing services and search for new financing. Although funds had already been spent on the project, controversy arose anew when federal transportation officials changed the funding guidelines, and the VTA board began contemplating the need for new taxes. BART to Silicon Valley—What’s Next? continues the dialogue as part of the Mineta Transportation Institute’s Hot Spot forum …

Ivibrate: Interactive Visualization Based Framework For Clustering Large Datasets, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Apr 2006

Ivibrate: Interactive Visualization Based Framework For Clustering Large Datasets, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

With continued advances in communication network technology and sensing technology, there is astounding growth in the amount of data produced and made available through cyberspace. Efficient and high-quality clustering of large datasets continues to be one of the most important problems in large-scale data analysis. A commonly used methodology for cluster analysis on large datasets is the three-phase framework of sampling/summarization, iterative cluster analysis, and disk-labeling. There are three known problems with this framework which demand effective solutions. The first problem is how to effectively define and validate irregularly shaped clusters, especially in large datasets. Automated algorithms and statistical methods …

Detecting The Change Of Clustering Structure In Categorical Data Streams, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Apr 2006

Detecting The Change Of Clustering Structure In Categorical Data Streams, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Analyzing clustering structures in data streams can provide critical information for making decision in real time. In this paper, we present a framework for detecting the change of critical clustering structure in categorical data streams. The framework consists of the Hierarchical Entropy Tree structure (HE-Tree) and the extended ACE clustering algorithm. HE-Tree can efficiently capture the entropy property of the categorical data streams and allow us to draw precise clustering information from the data stream for high-quality BkPLots with the extended ACE algorithm.
