Public Inputs And Dynamic Producer Behavior: Endogenous Growth In U.S. Agriculture, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Alejandro Onofri Feb 2006

Public Inputs And Dynamic Producer Behavior: Endogenous Growth In U.S. Agriculture, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Alejandro Onofri

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper is an attempt to understand the impact of public R&D and public infrastructure on the performance of the U.S. agricultural sector during the last part of the twentieth century. A neoclassical Solow growth model is not sufficient for this understanding given the sustained growth performance of the sector. We base our analysis on a well known endogenous growth model, the 'AK model' where nonconvexities are introduced through non-rival inputs. Based on these models and within the dynamic models that rationalize private and public decision making, we have identified three testable hypotheses regarding the aggregate agricultural production technology. They …

Policy Networks And Institutional Collective Action: A Research Agenda, John T. Scholz, Richard C. Feiock, T. K. Ahn Feb 2006

Policy Networks And Institutional Collective Action: A Research Agenda, John T. Scholz, Richard C. Feiock, T. K. Ahn

Working Group on Interlocal Services Cooperation

Policy fragmentation in the American federalist system leads to inefficiencies as decisions by one authority impose positive and negative externalities on other authorities and their constituencies. We focus on the role of policy networks in shaping coordinated decisions that enhance the joint outcomes among governmental authorities. We advance two competing perspectives relating networks to collective action, one emphasizing the role of tightly-clustered "strong-tie" relationships capable of enhancing the credibility of commitments among network members, and the other emphasizing the role of extensive, "weak-tie" relationships linking diverse stakeholders in enhancing the shared information required to coordinate collective decisions.

Our previous projects …

The Journey Home: A Root-Metaphor Analysis Of The 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book, James N. Arrington Feb 2006

The Journey Home: A Root-Metaphor Analysis Of The 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book, James N. Arrington

Theses and Dissertations

In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the …

Cattle Cycles: Where Are We And Where Are We Headed?, Dillon Feuz Feb 2006

Cattle Cycles: Where Are We And Where Are We Headed?, Dillon Feuz

Cornhusker Economics

There are 97.1 million total head of cattle in the U.S. as of January 1, 2006. That is an increase of 1.78 percent over the 2005 value, and an increase of 2.33 percent over the 2004 value. The January 1, 2004 value marked the end of the prior cattle cycle and the start of a new cycle. The total number of beef cows that have calved is now at 33.3 million head, an increase of one percent over 2005. This marks the second year of herd growth and it appears that growth will continue in 2006; beef replacement heifers were …

Vulnerabilities To Depression, Anxiety And Interpersonal Problems: The Role Of Parental Styles, Schemas And Coping Styles, Daniel Kennedy Feb 2006

Vulnerabilities To Depression, Anxiety And Interpersonal Problems: The Role Of Parental Styles, Schemas And Coping Styles, Daniel Kennedy

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive theory proposes that maladaptive schemas influence the development of anxious and depressive symptoms and early parental experiences have been proposed to influence schema development. In this current study, measures of depressive and anxious pathology, parenting styles, coping styles and interpersonal problems were administered to 224 undergraduate students. The main purpose the study was to test the cognitive model and the hypothesis that early maladaptive schemas (EMS) as defined by Young (1994) mediate the relationship between parenting styles and anxious and depressive pathology. Results indicated that EMSs do play an important mediational role in relationship to both anxious and depressive …

The Market For Takeover Defenses, Sharon Hannes Feb 2006

The Market For Takeover Defenses, Sharon Hannes

ExpressO

This paper develops a market-based approach to takeover defenses. In this framework, a firm’s decision to go public without defenses is considered a decision to produce an unshielded target. The paper shows that the voluminous classical literature on takeover defenses, which argues either that takeover defenses are good for all firms or that they are bad for all firms, actually ignores both supply and demand considerations. Recent empirical findings that revealed that IPO-stage firms diverge in antitakeover practices led to the rapid development of a new branch in the literature. This branch emphasizes that firms diverge in defense-adopting costs due …

When Discrimination Is Good: Encouraging Broadband Internet Investment Without Content Neutrality, Christopher E. Fulmer Feb 2006

When Discrimination Is Good: Encouraging Broadband Internet Investment Without Content Neutrality, Christopher E. Fulmer

Duke Law & Technology Review

Cable television and traditional telephone companies are increasingly offering the same set of services: telephone, television, and broadband Internet access. Competition between these two types of companies would ordinarily require them to improve these services, but unless broadband providers have the ability to discriminate on the basis of content and charge Internet video providers that compete with their own video services, the growth of the Internet will be stunted, as broadband providers will not improve the capacity of their networks.
