Dewey's Epistemology: An Argument For Warranted Assertions, Knowing, And Meaningful Classroom Practice, Deron R. Boyles
Dewey's Epistemology: An Argument For Warranted Assertions, Knowing, And Meaningful Classroom Practice, Deron R. Boyles
Educational Policy Studies Faculty Publications
In an effort to navigate the treacherous path between professionalism and social relevancy, this essay takes up an area of professional philosophy - epistemology - with the intention of reclaiming the integrative role John Dewey held for philosophy and classroom practice. Deron Boyles asserts that epistemology can and should represent an area of inquiry that is relevant and useful for philosophy of education, especially as it develops classroom practices that foster inquiry. He specifically seeks to revive Dewey’s conception of warranted assertibility in an effort to show the value of fallibilist epistemology in practical and social teaching and learning contexts. …

Western Libraries Presentations
Libraries are regularly called upon to compete with other areas in their organization for public and private resources. We have to go beyond circulation numbers, material for costs, number of titles and other quantitative measures. This paper explores service quality performance measures using the LibQUAL survey instrument and how it was applied at Queen's University and University of Western Ontario. The issues covered include organizing and marketing the survey project.

Alternative Realities/The Multiverse: A Metaphysical Conundrum, Freda A. Wynn
Communication Theses
Films of every era reflect the concerns and fears of Western society. The acceleration of technology, the loss of a concrete world, the uneasy relationship with humans and ever increasing complex machines are inducing a fear of losing the ability to discern reality. The reality of ideas from science and the world around are woven into the narratives that we use to explain life. The films we watch reflect our hopes and fears and as the fears increase so do films with a shared theme of alternative realities. To know reality and search for the true Self is the job of …

The Xl Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau
The Xl Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Sunday is Super Bowl XL in Detroit. In the Roman Empire the XL denoted the number forty. In a fortuitous parallel within the American Empire the XL carries the meaning, "Extra Large." No doubt Super Bowl XL will be both extremely large and as decadent as one would expect of a Roman orgy in the time of Caligula, the Emperor who, in a post-modern gesture, appointed his horse to the Roman Senate.
Implications Of Late Pleistocene Climatic Change On The Morphological Variations Of The Neanderthal, Dawn Marie Bradley
Implications Of Late Pleistocene Climatic Change On The Morphological Variations Of The Neanderthal, Dawn Marie Bradley
Geosciences Theses
In this research, the relationship of climatic changes between 130k to 28k years BP to concurrent morphological variations in Neanderthals was tested. Traditional anthropological studies attribute robust Neanderthal morphological traits as an adaptation to a cold environment. A database of previously completed terrestrial paleoclimatic reconstructions in Europe and the Mediterranean was compiled and used to create a series of GIS-generated timeslice maps. Regional climatic conditions were then related to changes in Neanderthal appearances, morphology and disappearances as evident in the archaeological record. To establish climatic conditions, existing studies were compiled from two regions: Europe and the Mediterranean. The European data …

"I Know What You Are Going Through": The Impact Of Negotiating The Criminal Justice System On The Well Being Of Family Members Of Homicide Victims And Criminal Offenders., Cara-Vanessa Hadassah Bertollini
Sociology Theses
Increasingly individuals are coming into contact with the criminal justice system. For millions of Americans this contact is mediated by the victimization or offense of a loved one. This study focused on exploring what the family members of victims and offenders identify as their needs and concerns in relation to the criminal justice system, assessing if the system is effective in addressing these needs and concerns, and understanding how these families' lives are shaped by interaction with the system. Grounded theory method was used to analyze the narratives posted on two on-line message boards, one for victims' families and one …

Alternative Education Programs: Program And Student Characteristics, Regina M. Foley, Lang-Sze Pang
Special Topics, General
Alternative education programs are often viewed as individualized opportunities designed to meet the educational needs for youth identified as at-risk for school failure. Increasingly, these programs have been identified as programs for disruptive youth who have been referred from traditional schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the administrative structures and physical facilities of alternative education programs and to describe the student population and educational services being offered to youth attending such programs. The findings suggest programs appear to be largely site-based programs, often operating in physical facilities with limited access to academic suppm1s. The …

Partnerships/Community
In February 2004, Barbara Holland presented a workshop for CSU service-learning practitioners and community partners titled, "Understanding and Strengthening the Role of Community in Service-Learning Partnerships." Holland designed the workshop to be easily replicated and modified by others. Elements from Holland's workshop are included here for reference, and a modified version of her PowerPoint presentation can be found in Appendix A. Inspired and challenged by her ideas and suggestions, campus directors went on to produce their own unique workshops. Our goal with this publication is to keep the momentum going by providing examples and materials from several of these workshops …
