Teaching And Researching "The Politics Of Race" In A Majority White Institution, Byron D. Orey Jan 2006

Teaching And Researching "The Politics Of Race" In A Majority White Institution, Byron D. Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, I outline some of the challenges faced by people of color who teach at traditional white institutions (TWIs). In addition, I offer proposed remedies to address such challenges. Given that the primary foci of Research I universities are research, teaching, and service (generally in that order), this chapter places special emphasis on these categories.

I first suggest that departments attempting to diversify their faculty consider hiring more than one person of color. While I was contemplating whether to accept my current job, I was contacted by a woman of color who told me that she had just …

Explanation, Human Nature, And Tort Theory, Jeffery L. Johnson Jan 2006

Explanation, Human Nature, And Tort Theory, Jeffery L. Johnson

ExpressO

The article argues that, as they are usually stated, corrective justice theories of torts and economic efficiency theories fail to contradict one another. Thus, although the literature typically sees these approaches as doing conceptual battle, it takes a good deal of philosophical analysis to discover a theoretical framework from which to assess one perspective as superior to the other. Indeed, in many cases the corrective justice scholar appears to be talking past the economic lawyer, and vice versa.

The article then goes on to suggest that the one perspective from which we can see a genuine conflict between the explanations …

Evaluation Of The Sliri/Landmine Action Socio-Economic Impact And Dangerous Area Surveys And Of Sliri's Organizational Sustainability In The Nuba Mountains, Jim Freedman Consulting Jan 2006

Evaluation Of The Sliri/Landmine Action Socio-Economic Impact And Dangerous Area Surveys And Of Sliri's Organizational Sustainability In The Nuba Mountains, Jim Freedman Consulting

Global CWD Repository

From its inspired beginnings in 2001, the Sudan Landmines Information and Response Initiative (SLIRI) has had the potential to become an influential mine action organization with the capacity to use the mine action platform for engaging Sudan's adversaries in a peacebuilding dialogue. It is the only non-partisan indigenous organization in thecountry. Its first location – or Sector Operations Centre (SOC) as the site offices have been called - and the most innovative has been in the Nuba Mountains, where shortly after the cease-fire in January 2002 SLIRI first introduced two offices working in tandem on either side of the conflict …

The Law Of Exclusionary Pricing, Herbert J. Hovenkamp Jan 2006

The Law Of Exclusionary Pricing, Herbert J. Hovenkamp

All Faculty Scholarship

The success of the Areeda-Turner test for predatory pricing and the Supreme Court's adoption of demanding proof requirements in its 1993 Brooke Group decision have made it very difficult for plaintiffs to win conventional predatory pricing claims. While many challenges to exclusionary pricing continue to be made, the legal theory has evolved away from classical predation to a variety of other theories. These include challenges to quantity and market share discounts, single item and package discounts, and various purchasing practices, including slotting fees, overinvestment in fixed cost assets, and overbuying of variable cost inputs. Plaintiffs have enjoyed somewhat greater success …

Deer-Vehicle Accident Hotspots In Northwest Clackamas County, Oregon, Linda K. Anderson Jan 2006

Deer-Vehicle Accident Hotspots In Northwest Clackamas County, Oregon, Linda K. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Road-kill of wildlife is common on Portland, Oregon's suburban fringe where development has increased road densities and traffic volume in rural areas. I identify the spatial and temporal patterns of black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) deer-vehicle accidents (DVA) at the suburban/rural interface of developing northwest Clackamas County using deer carcass pickup reports for county maintained roads for 1997-2004 and Oregon Department of Transportation deer-vehicle accident reports for 1996-2004. No black-tailed deer DVA models exist in the literature.

DVA increased 121% from 1997 to 1999 followed by a 26% decline by 2004. The initial DVA increase appears related to …

Does Space Matter To The Employment Of Tanf Recipients? Evidence From A Dynamic Discrete Choice Model With Unobserved Effects, Shiferaw Gurmu, Keith R. Ihlanfeldt, William J. Smith Jan 2006

Does Space Matter To The Employment Of Tanf Recipients? Evidence From A Dynamic Discrete Choice Model With Unobserved Effects, Shiferaw Gurmu, Keith R. Ihlanfeldt, William J. Smith

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

We study the factors affecting the employment probability of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients using recent quarterly panel data from Atlanta, Georgia. A central focus of our study is to determine whether the TANF recipient’s proximity to job opportunity and the availability of childcare affect her probability of full-time employment. Both static and dynamic models of employment choice are estimated that control for unobserved individual effects. We estimate models separately for a sub-sample of TANF recipients living in public housing, whose residential locations can be considered exogenously determined. We find substantial evidence that individual and family characteristics (such …

Bill Proposes Changes To Fence Viewer Statutes, J. David Aiken Jan 2006

Bill Proposes Changes To Fence Viewer Statutes, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

In Nebraska, if I want to make a neighbor pay for part of a division fence, I can ask him or her to do so. If they refuse, I can request fence viewers to determine how much of the division fence each neighbor should pay for. I can also build the fence myself and assume full responsibility for the costs of construction and maintenance. Ideally, neighbors should have a written agreement (filed with the land deeds) identifying how the costs of building and maintaining the fence will be shared. But written fence agreements are rare.
