Development Of Robust Guidelines And Assessment Procedures For Metal Contaminated Sediments, David Strom, Stuart L. Simpson, Dianne F. Jolley
Development Of Robust Guidelines And Assessment Procedures For Metal Contaminated Sediments, David Strom, Stuart L. Simpson, Dianne F. Jolley
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Assessment of contaminated sediments and development of remediation strategies is becoming an important priority for regulators and industries worldwide. Although sediment quality assessment frameworks exist, poor scientific procedures and a limited understanding of species sensitivity to common contaminants hinders most assessment programs. Globally, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for metals vary over several orders of magnitude and are not based on clear cause-effect relationships. Although equilibrium partitioning approaches to developing SQGs have been attempted, the cause-effect relationships are weak due to the many other modifying factors that influence metal bioavailability and toxicity. The inherent lack of defensible SQGs for metals currently …
Are Seed Dispersal And Predation In Fire-Sensitive Persoonia Species (Proteacae) Associated With Rarity?, Paul Rymer
Are Seed Dispersal And Predation In Fire-Sensitive Persoonia Species (Proteacae) Associated With Rarity?, Paul Rymer
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Seed dispersal and predation are key processes affecting the colonization and extinction of populations in fire-prone environments. If these processes influence distribution and abundance, rare species may be expected to have less seed removal and/or greater seed predation than common congeners. I compared seed removal and predation under plants in two closely related pairs of fire-sensitive common and rare Persoonia species with fleshy fruits in two replicate populations of each species. Seed removal by macropods was significantly greater in the two common species (>50% seeds/plant) than in their rare congeners (<25%). There was no overall effect of rarity on seed predation by rodents, but there were significantly more seeds of the rare Persoonia mollis subspecies maxima eaten than of the other three species. Plant size was the only attribute measured that was significantly correlated with seed removal (r ¼ 0:50). After including plant size as a covariate in the analysis, I still detected a significant effect of rarity on seed removal. High levels of seed removal were sustained in both small and large populations of the common Persoonia lanceolata, suggesting that population size may not be contributing to the differences between these common and rare species. The common-rare difference in the seed removal of Persoonia species seems robust across several plant and population attributes.

Performance Of Newly Developed Hollow Fiber Module With Spacer In Integrated Anaerobic–Aerobic Fungi Reactor Treating Textile Wastewater, Faisal I. Hai, Kazuo Yamamoto, Kensuke Fukushi
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
A submerged microfiltration membrane bioreactor implementing the white-rot fungus Coriolus versicolor was developed for effective treatment of textile dye wastewater [1]. In that system membrane fouling was precluded by placing a bundle of hollow fibers within a pre-filtration assembly, so as to avoid direct deposition of sludge onto it, together with its periodic high-pressure back-washing and low-dose chemical back-flushing. However, the extreme vulnerability of the bare membrane used in that study to inter-fibral deposition of sludge leading to merging of fibers indicated necessity of development of an appropriate module so that the proposed system may enjoy more flexibility in terms …

Carboni’s role both as participant in and chronicler of the Ballaarat uprising had historically been the subject of some controversial debate. Although the controversy regarding the veracity of Carboni’s account has long been settled, controversy regarding his competence as a writer is still relatively recent. Geoffrey Serle in the introduction to his edition of The Eureka Stockade claims that the book is unusual and unsusceptible to most canons of criticism although he also admits that Carboni does rise here and there to great narrative heights. Serle and others who have commented on Carboni’s work have however tended to relegate it …

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the causative agent of porcine enzootic pneumonia, a chronic and economically significant respiratory disease that affects swine production worldwide. M. hyopneumoniae adheres to, and adversely affects the function of ciliated epithelial cells of the respiratory tract, and the cilium adhesin (P97), is intricately but not exclusively involved in this process. Although binding of pathogenic bacteria to glycosaminoglycans is a recognised step in pathogenesis, knowledge of glycosaminoglycan-binding proteins is lacking in M. hyopneumoniae. However, heparin and other sulfated polysaccharides are known to block the binding of M. hyopneumoniae to purified swine respiratory cilia. In this study, four regions …

A series of N,N-dialkyl-2-phenylindol-3-ylglyoxylamides bearing the halogens iodine and bromine were synthesised and their binding affinity for the peripheral benzodiazepine binding sites (PBBS) in rat kidney mitochondrial membranes were evaluated using [3H]-PK11195. Central benzodiazepine receptor (CBR) affinities were also evaluated in rat cortices using 3H-flumazenil to determine their selectivity for PBBS over CBR. The tested compounds had PBBS binding affinities (IC50) ranging from 7.86 nM to 618 nM, with all compounds showing high selectivity over the CBR (CBR IC50 > 5000 nM). Among the 12 compounds tested, those with a diethylamide group were the most potent. The highest affinity iodinated PBBS …

The polymict Kamiaso Conglomerate (Mino Terrane, Japan) contains Jurassic to Palaeoproterozoic clasts—probably derived from Korean basement that lay nearby to the northwest at time of deposition. Clast K2 broke cleanly into two halves during sampling (but the halves were recombined for zircon separation). A third of the K2 zircons are colourless euhedral prisms with oscillatory zoning, with no inheritance and yielded a SHRIMP U/Pb date of 743±17 Ma. Two thirds of K2 zircons are brown oscillatory-zoned corroded prisms with a date of 1860±8 Ma, with inherited cores up to ∼2460 Ma. A likely explanation for this could be that clast …

DNA polymerases replicate the genome by associating with a range of other proteins that enable rapid, high-fidelity copying of DNA. This complex of proteins and nucleic acids is called the replisome. Proteins of the replisome must interact with other networks of proteins, such as those involved in DNA repair. Many of the proteins involved in DNA polymerisation and the accessory proteins are known, but the array of proteins they interact with, and the spatial and temporal arrangement of these interactions is a current research topic. Mass spectrometry is a technique that can be used to identify the sites of these …

Habitat complexity in temperate intertidal rockpools was manipulated to assess its effect on fish assemblage structure. We modified the complexity of the substratum within pools by adding or removing loose rocks. The complexity of the water column within pools was modified by the removal of macro-algae and the addition of artificial algae. We applied 5 treatments to 40 pools in 2 locations on the southeast Australian coast: addition of rocks and algae (+R+A), removal of rocks and algae (–R–A), removal of rocks but addition of algae (–R+A), addition of rocks and removal of algae (+R–A), and unmanipulated control pools (C). …

Foliage moisture stress may be detectable by remote sensing using high resolution spectral data, but meaningful diagnosis requires that plant water status be assessed on the ground under controlled conditions. Design parameters of an experimental plantation of E. camaldulensis (River red gum), were used to examine tree-level responses to moisture stress, as measured by xylem water potential, and relationships to physiological parameters including spectral reflectance, chlorophyll flurescence, and cholorphyll across a range of stress categories.

Chiral α-hydroxy-aldehydes generated in situ by the ADH reaction of vinyl sulfones undergo a borono-Mannich reaction with β-styrenyl boronic acid and primary amines to give anti-1,2-amino alcohols in high enantiomeric purities (ee 83-95%). This new method allows much more rapid access to these valuable chiral building blocks that has been used in a short formal synthesis (10 synthetic steps from 4-penten-1-ol) of (-)-swainsonine.

A Holistic Approach To Aboriginal Well Health Screening, Jill Mitchell, Kathryn Weston
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Moving past crisis management to the implementation of effective primary health care programs is key to rapid improvement in Aboriginal health. Historically. service delivery has been based on a sickness and disease model rather than an approach that focuses towards well health. Well health incorporates disease prevention. early intervention and management to restore physical and mental health, together with social health and wellbeing. Social health and wellbeing are crucial components of the holistic approach required to address the determinants of health, socio-ilconomic disadvantage and continuing grief which are evident in many remote Aboriginal communities.

Calculation Of The Cosmogenic Nuclide Production Topographic Shielding Scaling Factor For Large Areas Using Dems, Alexandru T. Codilean
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The recent surge of applications using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCNs) to calculate catchment-averaged erosion rates from isotopic concentrations in fluvial sediment, and the prospect of coupling TCN production functions with numerical surface process models (SPMs), necessitate a fast and accurate algorithm for the calculation of topographic shielding. Topographic shielding refers to the proportion of the incoming cosmic radiation that is shielded by the surrounding topography, the scaling factor being defined as the ratio of the unshielded (total minus shielded) to the total (or maximum) cosmic ray flux (i.e. the flux received by a horizontal, unobstructed surface). Topography contributes to the …

Roles Of Rifampicin In Drug-Drug Interactions: Underlying Molecular Mechanisms Involving Nuclear Receptor Pxr, Jiezhong Chen, Kenneth Raymond
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Rifampicin, an important drug in the treatment of tuberculosis, is used extensively despite its broad effects on drug-drug interactions, creating serious problems. The clinical importance of such interactions includes autoinduction leading to suboptimal or failed treatment. The concomitantly administered effects of rifampicin on other drugs can result in their altered metabolism or transportation that are metabolised by cytochromes P450 or transported by p-glycoprotein in the gastrointestinal tract and liver. This review paper summarises recent findings with emphases on the molecular mechanisms used to explain these broad drug-drug interactions. In general, rifampicin can act on a pattern: rifampicin activates the nuclear …

Given the current diversity of communication tools at an educator's disposal, what role (if any) does the discussion forum play in the development of a strong sense of community among students? This study sought to investigate the relationship between discussion forum interaction and perceived student sense of community. The results of the study demonstrate that while mere quantity of discussion forum postings is not an indicator of community development, a significant relationship is observed when contributions are codified into the various discussion interaction types (learner -learner; learner - content; system), An implication emerging from these findings is the ability for …

Of late, I have been conducting a review of empirical research that analyses the relationships between neoliberalism and the nonhuman world. When published, the review will, I hope, be a useful way-station in advancing our understanding of these relationships. In a short space of time there has been a proliferation of research into the `nature of neoliberalism and the neoliberalisation of nature' (McCarthy and Prudham, 2004). Until recently neoliberalism had been the topical preserve of critically minded urban, economic, and development geographers. Now, though, a cohort of environmental geographersöalso critically mindedöhave turned their attention to how the non- human world affects …
