Family In The Church Latter-Day Saint Doctrine Regarding Family And Gender, Amber Jean Seidel
Family In The Church Latter-Day Saint Doctrine Regarding Family And Gender, Amber Jean Seidel
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
To discover the compatibility of traditional Christianity and mainstream feminism, a content analysis was performed on confirmed sources of doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through systematic reading and identifying themes of God and the Bible, gender role separation, patriarchy, or domestic violence, an analysis of pertinent feminist criticisms was performed. Latter-day Saint doctrine of family includes the following statements: (1) there is a Heavenly Mother as a divine partner to Heavenly Father, (2) the Bible contains errors regarding respect toward women, (3) women need to be active in education, home, and community, (4) men should …
Understanding Compulsive Buying: The Dimensions And Management Of Addictive Shopping, Andrew Richard Wilczaki
Understanding Compulsive Buying: The Dimensions And Management Of Addictive Shopping, Andrew Richard Wilczaki
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Drawing on messages collected from an internet support group, this paper examines the motivations and dimensions of compulsive shopping as an addictive disorder. Two thousand nonrandom internet messages were collected and subjected to content analyses, resulting in a final sample of 197 subjects. Factor analyses and logistical regression models found varying motivations for compulsive shopping that were not mutually exclusive: the need to escape and the need to fill a void. Subsequently, compulsive shoppers with these motivations were found to manage their shopping differently, specifically in terms of help-seeking behaviors and organizational behaviors.
Coping And Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis, Elizabeth Shannon Kuhl
Coping And Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis, Elizabeth Shannon Kuhl
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
How adolescents cope with the stress of bracing or spinal fusion surgery for idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and how coping might impact quality of life (QOL) for this population is unknown. The primary aim of this study was thus to examine these relationships.
Forty-eight adolescents participated in this cross-sectional study and completed the SRS-22r, the PedsQL, and the A-COPE during regularly scheduled orthopedic appointments. Treatment groups did not differ significantly on either dimension of coping (approach or avoidant) or on either measure of quality of life. In addition, neither dimension of coping moderated QOL. However, higher use of avoidant …
A Maine Policy Review Interview With Governor Angus S. King
A Maine Policy Review Interview With Governor Angus S. King
Maine Policy Review
We had the pleasure of interviewing former governor Angus King about his views on Maine’s economy and future. In one hour we covered a lot of ground, touching on issues such as regionalization, the state’s role in economic development, and Governor King’s concerns about the nation.
Digital Dilemmas: The Transformation Of Scholarly Discourse In The Humanities, Anna H. Perrault
Digital Dilemmas: The Transformation Of Scholarly Discourse In The Humanities, Anna H. Perrault
School of Information Faculty Publications
The last two decades of the 20th century brought rapid and cataclysmic change to the industrialized world with the introduction and then invasion of computer technology into every aspect of life. Dissemination of scholarly research in many disciplines had migrated from journals and books produced by scholarly societies and university presses to the for-profit sector. As the corporate publishers began reaping profits from the scholarly enterprise, electronic publication and “taking back” the publication of research were solutions proposed to make the dissemination of research affordable for academe. The research library and scholarly publishing communities are collaborating in the establishment of …
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Social Capital And Subjective Well-Being In Four Regions Of Spain In The Mid-1990s, Maria Puerta Francos
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Social Capital And Subjective Well-Being In Four Regions Of Spain In The Mid-1990s, Maria Puerta Francos
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research offers an analysis of two concepts: subjective well-being and social capital. I examine each concept separately, looking at their underlying determinants and characteristics, and I also look at the links between these two notions, as there is theoretical support for their interdependent relationship. I have conducted data analysis of five samples, all part of the World Values Survey 1995-1996. The WVS 1995-1996 offers vast data for Spain and for four autonomous regions - Basque Country, Andalusia, Galicia and Valencia. For the national sample N= 1211. Regional sampling is as follows: Basque Country (N=2205), Andalusia (N=1803), Galicia (N=1200), and …

Teams In Library Technical Services, Jack G. Montgomery Jr., Contributor, Rosann Bazirjian, Editor, Rebecca Mugridge, Editor
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Book Gallery
Whether because of budget and staffing concerns or issues with productivity and output, technical services teams have come into being in many organizations. In Teams in Library Technical Services, editors Rosann Bazirjian and Rebecca Mugridge present research and case studies demonstrating what these reasons are and how the use of teams has been and should be applied to libraries. Everything from describing the various types of teams and how to manage them—especially in academic libraries—to exploring recurring themes on the relationships between professional and support staff, the changing roles of librarians, and how managers and teams address issues such …
Coalition Formation Theories Revisited: An Empirical Investigation Of Aumann's Hypothesis, Vincent Chua, Dan S. Felsenthal
Coalition Formation Theories Revisited: An Empirical Investigation Of Aumann's Hypothesis, Vincent Chua, Dan S. Felsenthal
Research Collection School Of Economics
In one of the earliest attempts to examine the effect of a priori voting power on actual political phenomena, Riker (1959) looked at changes in party affiliation in the French National Assembly in 1953–54, and used these data to test the hypothesis that deputies who switched parties were seeking thereby to increase their a priori voting power. His findings were negative, or at best inconclusive.
Commune-Level Estimation Of Poverty Measure And Its Application In Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii
Commune-Level Estimation Of Poverty Measure And Its Application In Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii
Research Collection School Of Economics
Cambodia is still suffering from the legacy of civil conflict after more than a decade. With over one-third of the population living below the poverty line, poverty remains one of the most serious problems in Cambodia. A number of governmental bodies, local and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international organizations operating in Cambodia have made eradicating poverty a priority and have established many social programmes to this end. In designing such programmes, the efficient allocation of resources is essential for making poverty alleviation more cost-effective. Targeting is often helpful for this purpose because one can avoid wasting resources on the …
Measuring Global Poverty Right: Mission Impossible?, M. G. Quibria
Measuring Global Poverty Right: Mission Impossible?, M. G. Quibria
Research Collection School Of Economics
The international community is committed to millennium development goals which postulate a vision of global development that makes eliminating poverty and sustaining development the overriding objective of global development efforts. In the hierarchy of the MDGs, the first and foremost goal is to reduce by half, between 1990–2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than a dollar a day (a widely used yardstick to measure extreme poverty). However, estimating such poverty across developing countries and globally is by no means a simple exercise nor has it yielded unambiguous results. This article provides a brief summary of the state …
Does Governance Matter? Yes, No Or Maybe Some Evidence From Developing Asia, M. G. Quibria
Does Governance Matter? Yes, No Or Maybe Some Evidence From Developing Asia, M. G. Quibria
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper seeks to explore the relationship between economic growth and governance performance in Asian developing economies. This exploration yields some interesting conclusions. First, notwithstanding its tremendous economic achievements, the state of governance in Asia is not stellar by international comparison. Indeed, a majority of these countries seem to suffer from a governance deficit. Second, contrary to our expectation, data do not suggest any strong positive link between governance and growth: paradoxically, countries that exhibit surpluses in governance on average grew much slower than those with deficits. The paper ends with some conjecture about this apparent paradox.
A Class Of Nonlinear Stochastic Volatility Models, Jun Yu, Zhenlin Yang
A Class Of Nonlinear Stochastic Volatility Models, Jun Yu, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper proposes a class of nonlinear stochastic volatility models based on the Box-Cox transformation which offers an alternative to the one introduced in Andersen (1994). The proposed class encompasses many parametric stochastic volatility models that have appeared in the literature, including the well known lognormal stochastic volatility model, and has an advantage in the ease with which different specifications on stochastic volatility can be tested. In addition, the functional form of transformation which induces marginal normality of volatility is obtained as a byproduct of this general way of modeling stochastic volatility. The efficient method of moments approach is used …

Research Collection School Of Economics
L S Penrose's Limit Theorem-which is implicit in Penrose (1952, p. 72) [Penrose, 1952. On the Objective Study of Crowd Behavior. H. K. Lewis and Co, London, p. 72] and for which he gave no rigorous proof-says that, in simple weighted voting games, if the number of voters increases indefinitely and the relative quota is pegged, then-under certain conditions-the ratio between the voting powers of any two voters converges to the ratio between their weights. Lindner and Machover (2004) [Lindner I., Machover M. 2004. L.S. Penrose's limit theorem: proof of some special cases. Mathematical Social Sciences 47, 37-49] prove some …
Intraday Stock Prices, Volume, And Duration: A Nonparametric Conditional Density Analysis, Anthony S. Tay, Christopher Ting
Intraday Stock Prices, Volume, And Duration: A Nonparametric Conditional Density Analysis, Anthony S. Tay, Christopher Ting
Research Collection School Of Economics
We investigate the distribution of high-frequency price changes, conditional on trading volume and duration between trades, on four stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The conditional probabilities are estimated nonparametrically using local polynomial regression methods. We find substantial skewness in the distribution of price changes, with the direction of skewness dependent on the sign of trade. We also find that the probability of larger price changes increases with volume, but only for trades that occur with longer durations. The distribution of price changes vary with duration primarily when volume is high.

Modeling The Firm-Size Distribution Using Box-Cox Heteroscedastic Regression, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse
Modeling The Firm-Size Distribution Using Box-Cox Heteroscedastic Regression, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse
Research Collection School Of Economics
Using the Box-Cox regression model with heteroscedasticity (BCHR), we re-examine the size distribution of the Portuguese manufacturing firms studied by Machado and Mata () using the Box-Cox quantile regression (BCQR) method. We show that the BCHR model compares favourably against the BCQR method. In particular, the BCHR model can answer the key questions addressed by the BCQR method, with the advantage that the estimated quantile functions are monotonic. Furthermore, estimation of the BCHR model is straightforward and the confidence intervals of the BCHR regression quantiles are easy to compute.
Financial Liberalization In A Small Open Economy, Haiping Zhang, Jürgen Von Hagen
Financial Liberalization In A Small Open Economy, Haiping Zhang, Jürgen Von Hagen
Research Collection School Of Economics
We address three related questions concerning financial liberalization in a small open economy. Does financial liberalization and the resulting capital inflow improve production efficiency in the domestic economy? Who benefits from financial liberalization in the long run and in the short run? Should financial liberalization be implemented gradually or hastily? Our main results are as follows. First, whether financial deregulation in one sector can improve production efficiency may depend on financial regulation in other sectors. Second, financial liberalization may have opposite welfare implications to domestic agents with different productivity in the long run. Third, although some domestic agents lose in …
An Empirical Examination Of Ipo Underpricing In The Chinese A-Share Market, Ting Yu, Yiu Kuen Tse
An Empirical Examination Of Ipo Underpricing In The Chinese A-Share Market, Ting Yu, Yiu Kuen Tse
Research Collection School Of Economics
Research in the literature shows that initial public offerings (IPOs) of common stocks are systematically priced at a discount to their subsequent initial trading price. The large underpricing magnitude in the Chinese IPO market has attracted much attention. We consider three hypotheses that may explain the IPO underpricing in China. These are the winner's curse hypothesis, the ex ante uncertainty hypothesis and the signaling hypothesis. Among these hypotheses, the winner's curse hypothesis has not been tested in the Chinese market. Using IPO data for online fixed-price offerings from November 1995 to December 1998, our results show that the winner's curse …
A Survey On Physical Delivery Versus Cash Settlement In Futures Contracts, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse
A Survey On Physical Delivery Versus Cash Settlement In Futures Contracts, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse
Research Collection School Of Economics
A futures contract may adopt physical delivery or cash settlement to liquidate open positions after the maturity day. While traditionally physical delivery specification is favored, exchanges have recently turned to examine cash settlement possibilities. This paper summarizes current literature on settlement specifications with emphases on market manipulation, cash index construction, and hedging effectiveness comparisons.

An Interactive And Iterative Evaluation Approach For Creating Collaborative Learning Environments, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville, Marita Holst
University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers
Inspired by a three‑year Creative University 'arena' initiative at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden, an international team of faculty researchers conducted an exploratory study in 2005, which aimed to investigate the efficacy of an interactive design and evaluation process for technology‑enabled collaborative learning environments. This applied research approach was designed as a collaborative evaluation process for co‑creation of technology‑enabled, learning‑ focused physical and virtual 'learning commons.' Faculty researchers from Sweden and the United States used Soft Systems Methodology tools, including the Process for Organisational Meanings (POM) model, to guide sixty‑two students' participatory co‑design and evaluation activities. In this paper, …

The Authority Of Traditional Islamic Leaders: A Sociological Study Of Kyai's Authority In Pesantren, Achmad Zainal Arifin
The Authority Of Traditional Islamic Leaders: A Sociological Study Of Kyai's Authority In Pesantren, Achmad Zainal Arifin
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The 9/11 tragedy, followed by the War on Terror policy have brought serious impacts on a study of Islam, especially regarding the issue of terrorism. An absolute authority of traditional Islamic leaders is often blamed as a source of religious violence. Their charismatic leaderships are considered having threats for the rest of the world. Imbalanced information provided by the Western media about Islam neglected a peaceful side of lslamic teachings. Through sociological perspective, especially the concept of authority from Weber, this thesis provides an alternative description of the authority of traditional Islamic leader in Indonesia, so-called kyai, the owner …
Cila: Librarians On A Mission, Georgianne Bordner
Cila: Librarians On A Mission, Georgianne Bordner
The Christian Librarian
ACL members have long been involved in serving international libraries, both by going overseas to work in libraries there, and by providing resources and advice from home. The Commission for International Library Assistance (CILA) was formed in order to develop a strategic plan to accomplish this mission more effectively, through publications, training, consultation, and other assistance. This brief history shows that over the years, changing technology and circumstances have changed some of CILA’s strategies, but the mission remains the same.

Changes Coming: How Information Literacy And Presentation Software Intersect, Linda L. Jones
The Christian Librarian
Information literacy should promote changes in a person’s attitude and actions regarding an issue. Learning how to access and use resources is ineffective if changes do not occur in communicating more effectively. This paper focuses on eight changes: audience, storyboard, master views, handouts, action , control keys, bullets, and photography.
