Brazilians In The U.S. And Massachusetts: A Demographic And Economic Profile, Alvaro Lima, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira Nov 2007

Brazilians In The U.S. And Massachusetts: A Demographic And Economic Profile, Alvaro Lima, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira

Gastón Institute Publications

Brazil has long seen itself as a destination for immigrants from across the globe, welcoming the likes of Portuguese, Spanish, German, Russian, Polish, Czech, Japanese, and many other nationalities throughout the twentieth century. Migration out of Brazil is a relatively new phenomenon. It was catalyzed in part by the military coup of 1964, when thousands of Brazilians went into exile (though many of them returned following the amnesty of 1979). Over the last few decades, the search for better economic opportunities has led more and more Brazilians to leave their homeland. Five of Brazils’ twenty-six states – Minas Gerais, Espírito …

Semantic Convergence Of Wikipedia Articles, Christopher J. Thomas, Amit P. Sheth Nov 2007

Semantic Convergence Of Wikipedia Articles, Christopher J. Thomas, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Social networking, distributed problem solving and human computation have gained high visibility. Wikipedia is a well established service that incorporates aspects of these three fields of research. For this reason it is a good object of study for determining quality of solutions in a social setting that is open, completely distributed, bottom up and not peer reviewed by certified experts. In particular, this paper aims at identifying semantic convergence of Wikipedia articles; the notion that the content of an article stays stable regardless of continuing edits. This could lead to an automatic recommendation of good article tags but also add …

Recommendations For The Victim Assistance Provisions In A Treaty Banning Cluster Munitions: A Practitioners’ Perspective, Hi Nov 2007

Recommendations For The Victim Assistance Provisions In A Treaty Banning Cluster Munitions: A Practitioners’ Perspective, Hi

Global CWD Repository

With the aim of contributing to the Oslo process, Handicap International launched an initiative with civil society and international organizations to find common recommendations for the victim assistance provisions in a treaty banning cluster munitions. Together we shared our experience in affected countries and our lessons learned, exchanging ideas through an electronic discussion forum and then meeting in a practitioners’ workshop in Paris. Colleagues from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iraq, Lebanon, Tajikistan and Uganda participated in these exercises along with practitioners from a variety of backgrounds experienced in working on victim assistance programs in mine and cluster munition affected countries.

Conjunctive Queries For A Tractable Fragment Of Owl 1.1, Markus Krotzsch, Sebastian Rudolph, Pascal Hitzler Nov 2007

Conjunctive Queries For A Tractable Fragment Of Owl 1.1, Markus Krotzsch, Sebastian Rudolph, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite the success of the Web Ontology Language OWL, the development of expressive means for querying OWL knowledge bases is still an open issue. In this paper, we investigate how a very natural and desirable form of queries-namely conjunctive ones-can be used in conjunction with OWL such that one of the major design criteria of the latter-namely decidability-can be retained. More precisely, we show that querying the tractable fragment EL++ of OWL 1.1 is decidable. We also provide a complexity analysis and show that querying unrestricted EL++ is undecidable.

Does Welfare Reform Work In Rural America? A 7-Year Follow-Up, Ann Tickamyer, Debra Henderson, Barry Tadlock Nov 2007

Does Welfare Reform Work In Rural America? A 7-Year Follow-Up, Ann Tickamyer, Debra Henderson, Barry Tadlock

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Even before the advent of welfare reform, studies of low income working and welfare dependent groups showed that low wage working women are worse off than those who combine welfare with other income sources and that most used a wide variety of livelihood strategies. This is especially the case in poor rural settings where work is scarce and additional obstacles to employment such as lack of transportation and childcare are endemic. Data from a selfadministered survey of users of human service agency programs in four counties in a distressed region of Appalachian Ohio in 1999, 2001, and 2005, provide a …

Beyond Confronting The Myth Of Racial Democracy: The Role Of Afro-Brazilian Women Scholars And Activists, Nathalie Lebon

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

This paper offers a synopsis of the current scholarship mapping the social and economic exclusion of women of African descent in Brazil. It highlights the work of and role played by Afro-Brazilian women scholars and activists in redressing the paucity, until recently, of basic data and research on the life conditions of women of African descent. Finally, it provides some initial thoughts on the national and transnational dynamics of knowledge production underlying this state of affairs.

The Purpose Of Our Efforts, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This year’s APA Convention in San Francisco was something of a homecoming for the division, for it was in that same city, some 18 years ago, that group psychology and group psychotherapy first took the stage as a newly founded division within APA. Only a few months earlier this fledgling coalition of dedicated supporters of group approaches had successfully petitioned APA for official divisional recognition. As that petition explained, it was time for psychologists to focus on groups and group-based approaches to adjustment, arguing that there “are two basic psychological approaches to human life and to mental health; one through …

Allying For Peace: Treaty Obligations And Conflict Between Allies, Andrew G. Long, Timothy Nordstrom, Kyeonghi Baek Nov 2007

Allying For Peace: Treaty Obligations And Conflict Between Allies, Andrew G. Long, Timothy Nordstrom, Kyeonghi Baek

Faculty Publications

We argue that certain provisions of alliance treaties can signal credible commitments to a peaceful relationship among members and establish institutional mechanisms that promote the settlement of disagreements through peaceful negotiation. Nonaggression, peaceful dispute settlement, military institutionalization, and permanent organization provisions should increase the duration of peace between alliance members; we test our hypotheses with a duration model. The analysis generally supports our expectations except that alliances that create permanent organizations, even those specifically established to arbitrate disagreements, are associated with shorter durations of peace. We conclude with some implications of our argument for the study of military alliances and …

Outsourcing Open Access: Digital Commons At The University Of Wollongong, Australia, Helen E. Mandl, Michael K. Organ Nov 2007

Outsourcing Open Access: Digital Commons At The University Of Wollongong, Australia, Helen E. Mandl, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In October 2005 the University of Wollongong gave approval for the implementation of an institutional repository utilising Proquest’s Digital Commons software, the first such instance in Australia. The project sought, over a 2 year period, to make available online a significant portion of the university’s research output for the years 2000-5. It was envisaged that improved accessibility to journal articles and conference papers would assist in enhancing the research reputation of the university. This paper outlines why Digital Commons, re-branded as Research Online (ro.uow.edu.au), was chosen rather than an open source software solution. Issues arising from the utilisation of an …

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor Nov 2007

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

A transformation is taking place at the University of Wollongong Library. An extension to the building is adding 2,000 square metres of space across three floors and visually changing the façade from a heavy bunker to a light-filled, transparent space. As the extension project progresses, the impact on both the exterior and interior are increasingly evident. The pebblecrete slabs that were suspended over the top floor and appeared to press the brick walls into the ground have been removed. A number of small shrubs and trees obscuring the building have gone. A soaring portico roof now provides shade for the …

Knowledge Mobilisation In Communities Through Socio-Technical System, Helen M. Hasan, Kate Crawford Nov 2007

Knowledge Mobilisation In Communities Through Socio-Technical System, Helen M. Hasan, Kate Crawford

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Enterprises in both the public and private sector undertake knowledge management (KM) initiatives through which they hope to engender a new, more adaptive and flexible culture of learning and innovation in their organisations. Creative activities involving social learning and innovation are, however, more common in less formal entities such as communities of practice at work and community service organisations in civil society. This paper presents the results and implications of collaborative research into the understanding, development and evaluation of socio-technical systems (STS) designed to mobilise collective knowledge in diverse community settings. The research concerns information and communications (ICT)-mediated activities of …
