La Racionalidad De Las Preferencias Políticas En México: Estudios Recientes De Opinión Pública Y Comportamiento Electoral, Rodolfo Sarsfield Dec 2006

La Racionalidad De Las Preferencias Políticas En México: Estudios Recientes De Opinión Pública Y Comportamiento Electoral, Rodolfo Sarsfield

Rodolfo Sarsfield

Palabras …

Militarization And Policing—Its Relevance To 21st Century Police, Peter Kraska Dec 2006

Militarization And Policing—Its Relevance To 21st Century Police, Peter Kraska

Peter Kraska

This work examines the blurring distinctions between the police and military institutions and between war and law enforcement. In this article, the author asserts that understanding this blur, and the associated organizing concepts militarization and militarism, are essential for accurately analyzing the changing nature of security, and the activity of policing, in the late-modern era of the 21st century.

Academic Libraries And Shared Reading Programs, Abby Kasowitz-Scheer Dec 2006

Academic Libraries And Shared Reading Programs, Abby Kasowitz-Scheer

Abby Kasowitz-Scheer

This summer, thousands of soon-to-be college students are reading books as part of campus-wide “shared reading” programs (also referred as to common reader programs, one book programs, etc.). Such programs are designed to provide incoming students with a common experience and invite exploration of particular themes (e.g., diversity, etc.), while promoting reading and intellectual engagement (Twiton, 2007). A variety of special events and initiatives are planned during fall and sometimes spring semesters to give students multiple opportunities to connect with the book, such as author visits, discussion groups, and book-related course assignments. This College Connection highlights several shared reading programs …

What Can I Expect To Earn: Information Sources For Library Salary Negotiations, Joseph Zumalt Dec 2006

What Can I Expect To Earn: Information Sources For Library Salary Negotiations, Joseph Zumalt

Joseph R. Zumalt

Finding salary information about individual library positions is a difficult but not impossible task. There are sources available for free and for fee which tell someone what salary to ask for in a given location. Commercially available tools are also available over the Internet. Two Internet-accessible salary tools, from Salary.com and SalaryExpert.com, were reviewed for library positions in the immediate Champaign-Urbana (IL) area. To test the accuracy of these tools, a file was created to compare salary, years of experience and level of responsibility. While requiring a considerable effort, this level of detail provides a better sense of library salaries …

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn Dec 2006

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn

William C Welburn

The contributions of William Carl Bolivar, a Philadelphia African American bibliophile and journalist, are considered. Bolivar’s interest in historical documentation shaped his sense of interconnectedness with the collective memory of Philadelphia’s black community. His collecting interests are manifested in his column published in the Philadelphia Tribune, in his contributions to the American Negro Historical Society and other social and cultural organizations in Philadelphia, and in a published catalog of portions of his collection. Bolivar’s network of collectors and associates formed a “nucleus for a larger effort” to preserve African American cultural heritage. Their collecting efforts formed the foundation for black …

Growing Smarter: Achieving Livable Communities, Environmental Justice, And Regional Equity, Robert Bullard Dec 2006

Growing Smarter: Achieving Livable Communities, Environmental Justice, And Regional Equity, Robert Bullard

Robert D Bullard

Overview The smart growth movement aims to combat urban and suburban sprawl by promoting livable communities based on pedestrian scale, diverse populations, and mixed land use. But, as this book documents, smart growth has largely failed to address issues of social equity and environmental justice. Smart growth sometimes results in gentrification and displacement of low- and moderate-income families in existing neighborhoods, or transportation policies that isolate low-income populations. Growing Smarter is one of the few books to view smart growth from an environmental justice perspective, examining the effect of the built environment on access to economic opportunity and quality of …

Is Our Cd/Dvd Collection Worth All This? A Cost-Per Use Study Of Accompanying Materials, Marie Kennedy Dec 2006

Is Our Cd/Dvd Collection Worth All This? A Cost-Per Use Study Of Accompanying Materials, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

Librarians have spent a considerable amount of time discussing cataloging and processing procedures for texts that have accompanying material.  The procedures are usually well-documented but elaborate; are our efforts worth it?  This research uses a time study to produce a time and materials cost per use for the CDs and DVDs in the collection of the Norris Medical Library.  Analysis shows that the time and materials costs per use of the CDs and DVDs at this library are relatively low, and that little change in the procedures used at this library are needed.

Mental Health Parity Laws, Louis Graham, Kisha Braithwaite Dec 2006

Mental Health Parity Laws, Louis Graham, Kisha Braithwaite

Louis F Graham

Mental illnesses and disorders affect many people around the world annually, but unfortunately infrastructures and systems are not in place to adequately address these issues as much as they are for somatic diseases and ailments. Mental Health Parity Law seeks to equalize and improve available and accessible mental health treatment with medical care by mandating insurance and payment provisions. Mental Health Parity Law exists at federal and most state levels, however, federal and many state laws are not as inclusive and comprehensive as is necessary to fully reap the benefits of increased quality and affordable mental healthcare.

Tracking Performance: When Less Is More, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Hughes S. Dec 2006

Tracking Performance: When Less Is More, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Hughes S.

Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde

With or without a balanced scorecard, it is easy for managers to become inundated with metrics and measures. In this article, we first highlight the differences between lagging and leading measures. Second, we illustrate the importance of differentiating the strategic leading indicators-the key leading measures-from those that may improve operational efficiency without significant improvements in profitability. Third, we use a business simulation to demonstrate that focusing on and improving the key leading measures has the greatest impact on profitability, but getting lost in the secondary measures dilutes the effect. Combined, the results illustrate that less may be more when it …

The Bounded Community: Turning Foreigners Into Americans In 21st Century Los Angeles, Roger Waldinger Dec 2006

The Bounded Community: Turning Foreigners Into Americans In 21st Century Los Angeles, Roger Waldinger

Roger D Waldinger

Contrary to the forecasts of the scholarship on immigrant transnationalism, foreigners continue to get transformed into nationals. Engaging in the necessary adjustments is often acceptable to the people earlier willing to abandon home in search of the good life; the everyday demands of fitting in, as well as the attenuation of home country loyalties and ties, make the foreigners and their descendants increasingly similar to the nationals whose community they have joined. But the ex-foreigners also respond to the message conveyed by nationals and state institutions, all of which signal that acceptance is contingent on demonstrating a commitment to belonging. …

Loose With The Truth: Predicting Deception In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2006

Loose With The Truth: Predicting Deception In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

Using a simulated, two-party negotiation, we examined how characteristics of the actor, target, and situation affected deception. To trigger deception, we used an issue that had no value for one of the two parties (indifference issue). We found support for an opportunistic betrayal model of deception: deception increased when the other party was perceived as benevolent, trustworthy and as having integrity. Negotiators’ goals also affected the use of deception. Individualistic, cooperative and mixed dyads responded differently to information about the other party’s trustworthiness, benevolence and integrity when deciding to either misrepresent or leverage their indifference issue. Mixed dyads displayed opportunistic …

Dewey Deracialized: A Critical Race-Theoretic Perspective, Jonathan Furner Dec 2006

Dewey Deracialized: A Critical Race-Theoretic Perspective, Jonathan Furner

Jonathan Furner

Critical race theory is introduced as a potentially useful approach to the evaluation of bibliographic classification schemes. An overview is presented of the essential elements of critical race theory, including clarifications of the meanings of some important terms such as “race” and “social justice.” On the basis of a review of existing conceptions of the just and the antiracist library service, a rationale is presented for hypothesizing that critical race theory may be of use to the library and information sciences. The role of classification schemes as information institutions in their own right is established, and the Dewey Decimal Classification …
