Is The United States A Good Model For Reducing Social Exclusion In Europe?, John Schmitt, Ben Zipperer Dec 2006

Is The United States A Good Model For Reducing Social Exclusion In Europe?, John Schmitt, Ben Zipperer

Ben Zipperer

Advocates of U.S.-style labor market flexibility have long argued that Europe could generate jobs and lower unemployment if the continent's economies followed the example of the United States. More recently, proponents of the U.S. model have suggested that labor market deregulation also holds out the possibility of reducing the problem of "social exclusion" in Europe, primarily because unemployment is one of the worst forms of social exclusion and contributes to other forms of social marginalization. The authors review a broad range of social and economic indicators and conclude that the United States fares poorly compared with much of Europe on …

Attentional Vs. Intentional Biases In Hand Movements; Hand-Specific Coupling & Bimanual Reaching, Gavin Buckingham, David Carey Dec 2006

Attentional Vs. Intentional Biases In Hand Movements; Hand-Specific Coupling & Bimanual Reaching, Gavin Buckingham, David Carey

Gavin Buckingham

Most of the population is dextral, showing a clear preference for performing the vast majority of tasks with their right hand. Peters (1981) suggested that an asymmetrical bias in attention (toward the right hand in right handers) could account for many manual asymmetries in bimanual task performance, with the left hand unable to perform the attentionally demanding portion of the task. Likewise, Honda (1982) demonstrated preferential monitoring of the dominant hand during a bimanual reaching task. Recent evidence has also shown an intentional (i.e. output related motor attention) bias toward the dominant hand (Bestelmeyer & Carey, 2004), another possible factor …

Introducing The Navigator, The Juggler, And The Analyst: A Q Profile Of Undergraduate Psychology Students Within An Australian University, Dawn Darlaston-Jones

Dawn Darlaston-Jones

Much of the existing literature investigating non-completion in the university sector focuses on the demographic characteristics of the students while failing to adequately apply the same degree of scrutiny to the institution itself. In this paper we present the findings from the final stage of a three phase investigation into retention in a Western Australian university that utilises Q Method to understand the subjective interpretation and meaning of the student experience and how this relates to retention. The sample of 45 undergraduates was drawn from each of the four years of the psychology programme at Edith Cowan University and so …

Libraries And It: Are We There Yet?, Deborah Ludwig, Jeffrey Bullington

Deborah M. Ludwig

Published in a special Issue on Library and IT Mergers, this study aims to look at the impact for users on university library and information technology services, present and future, following merger. The study examined user survey data from the early 1990s through the 2006 LibQUAL+ survey, collected information through interviews with faculty and Information Services, and examined the National Science Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies reports on cyberinfrastructure. The paper finds that while the merged information services organization is not yet a resounding success from the perspectives of staff in information services or faculty, it is …

Greening The Business Economics Curriculum: A Paradigm For Environmental Stewardship In The 21st Century, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Economic growth depends upon the wealth of goods and services that natural resources provide. Yet, over the years, as corporations pursue hefty returns on their investment, they have been depleting the natural resources so vital for economic development. After the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, however, corporations that once viewed environmentalism as a threat to their survival all of a sudden realized sustainability as a means of gaining a competitive edge; it reduced costs and stimulated greater innovation. When the program of action for the Earth Summit was reviewed in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in …

Analyzing The Process Of Collective Reconciliation, Rafi Nets-Zehngut Dec 2006

Analyzing The Process Of Collective Reconciliation, Rafi Nets-Zehngut

Dr. Rafi Nets-Zehngut (Israel)

This paper addresses the apparent lack of systematic analysis classification of the components comprising the reconciliation process following intractable conflict and their mode of influence on the conflict parties. It offers a theoretical analysis and taxonomy of the types of activities carried out by collectives (e.g., states or ethnic groups) in the reconciliation process. Various components of such reconciliation processes and their activities are analyzed and illustrated, exploring the way each activity influences the parties and the processes, as well as their dialectical relations with other activities. The analysis proposed has practical implications for leaders and policy makers by assisting …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Call To Action, Deborah M. Whitley, Susan J. Kelley

Deborah M. Whitley

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), in partnership with the Administration on Aging (AoA) in Region IV, has demonstrated its commitment to supporting vulnerable families by undertaking a leadership role to establish a network of services for grandparents raising grandchildren. Beginning in 2002, the southeastern offices of ACF and AoA collaborated with federal, state and local public welfare, academic, and community service agencies in Georgia to form a provider consortium to identify the needs of grandparent-headed families, and to develop and execute a service delivery plan to address their needs. As a result, the focus of this paper describes …

Perceptions Of Campus-Level Advocacy And Influence Strategies Among Senior Administrators In College And University Libraries, Janice Simmons-Welburn, Beth Mcneil, William Welburn

Beth McNeil

In recent years, interest has grown among academic librarians on developing strategies that garner support for library initiatives and influence campus-level decision-making. This practice has been characterized in the literature on managing academic libraries as increasing advocacy, or the capacity to grow support for library priorities among faculty and administrators using influence and persuasion.

Scarred Sexuality: The Imprint Of Child Abuse Experiences On The Sexual Beliefs And Behaviors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse Victims, Joan A. Reid Dec 2006

Scarred Sexuality: The Imprint Of Child Abuse Experiences On The Sexual Beliefs And Behaviors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse Victims, Joan A. Reid

Joan A Reid, Ph.D.

Sexual victimization of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors occurs at a disproportionately high rate compared to those without history of CSA. Traumatic sexualization or poor sexual self-esteem has been shown to partially mediate revictimization of CSA survivors. Using data from a longitudinal study of sexually abused girls, this study explores whether specific characteristics of CSA and if experiencing additional forms of child abuse contribute to poor sexual self-esteem. Ordinal logistic regression revealed that those neglected as children, physically abused, or involved in child prostitution had a greater likelihood of higher levels of poor sexual self-esteem.

The Why Of The Beholder: An Analysis Of The Use Of Art Image Databases By Art Historians, Rose Fortier Dec 2006

The Why Of The Beholder: An Analysis Of The Use Of Art Image Databases By Art Historians, Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

In the field of art history, there is a great potential for the use of art image databases. However, there is little literature that deals specifically with the needs and desires of art historians when it comes to art image databases. This thesis fills the gap in the literature with a user study of the use of art image databases by art historians. It includes a survey of what databases are used, why they are used, and to what extent they are used by art history professors. Results indicate that many issues in the usability and design of currently available …

Brief Report: Impact Of Classroom Presentations About Health And Help Seeking On Rural Australian Adolescents’ Intentions To Consult Health Care Professionals., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2006

Brief Report: Impact Of Classroom Presentations About Health And Help Seeking On Rural Australian Adolescents’ Intentions To Consult Health Care Professionals., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

Building Bridges-GP-Team (Building Bridges-Team; Wilson et al., 2004c) is a variation of the Building Bridges to General Practice: GPs in Schools program (Building Bridges-GP; Wilson et al., 2004a), which promotes consultation with health care professionals who are local and available for rural and regional adolescent’ consultation. The first major component of Building Bridges-GP-Team involves structured health professional training that provides knowledge in three basic areas: (1) adolescents’ help seeking barriers and ways to address barriers in primary health care; (2) developmental issues relevant to adolescent’ help seeking; and (3) classroom management, presentation strategies, and elementary teaching skills. Training is based …

Placing Social Policy? Reflections On Canada’S New Deal For Cities And Communities, Neil Bradford Dec 2006

Placing Social Policy? Reflections On Canada’S New Deal For Cities And Communities, Neil Bradford

Neil Bradford

This article analyses the New Deal for Cities and Communities pursued by the federal Liberal government between 2004 and 2006. Situating the initiative in broader urban policy debates about the merits of place-based interventions in tackling problems of poverty and exclusion, it is argued that the New Deal represented a novel attempt at "interscalar policy coordination" within Canadian federalism. Three specific policy tools are identified as central to the New Deal framework-municipal revenue transfers; urban development agreements; and community action research. To understand the New Deal's impact, the implementation of these tools is explored in the context of the City …

Strategic Party Government: Party Influence In Congress, 1789-2000.”, Matthew J. Lebo, Adam J. Mcglynn, Gregory Koger Dec 2006

Strategic Party Government: Party Influence In Congress, 1789-2000.”, Matthew J. Lebo, Adam J. Mcglynn, Gregory Koger

Gregory Koger

Why does the influence of Congressional parties fluctuate over time Building on prevailing answers, we develop a model, Strategic Party Government, which highlights the electoral motives of legislative parties and the strategic interaction between parties. We test this theory using the entire range of House and Senate party behavior from 1789 to 2000 and find that the strategic behavior of parties complements members' preferences as an explanation for variation in party influence. Specifically, the strongest predictors of one party's voting unity are the unity of the opposing party and the difference between the parties in the preceding year. Moreover, we …
