Global Research Competition Affects Measured U.S. Academic Output, Diana M. Hicks

Between 1992 and 1999, the number of papers published by U.S. academics fell by 9 percent as reported in the National Sciences Board’s Science & Engineering Indicators–2002 (SEI). This chapter seeks to understand why this occurred. A 9 percent decline in output could be a valuable tool for advocacy for almost any constituency in U.S. academia. Advocates could report trends in particular fields over limited periods of time to support arguments about the deleterious effects of the emerging patent culture, the insidious effects of health insurers on medical research, the harm of decreasing federal support for engineering, the dangers of …

Environmental Effects Of Intensification Of Agriculture: Livestock Production And Regulation, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Donna K. Fisher, Chieko Umetsu

This article deals with the relationship between industrialization of agriculture and the environment in developing countries. We specifically focus on livestock production and regulation. We develop a simple economic framework to demonstrate the effect of location on intensification of industrial activity in farming, and discuss this issue in the context of urbanization and economic growth in developing countries. Policy implications of the model are discussed in light of the experience of developed countries in regulating livestock pollution and other externalities. We argue that environmental problems from agricultural industrialization in developing countries may pose major challenges. In the case of livestock …

The educational attainments of Beijing’s permanent ethnic minority population out perform or are on par with the dominant, local Hans. Yet, the Han demographic disproportionately dominates the high-wage, education-intensive employment sectors. What accounts for this paradox? What does this signify regarding the management of ethnic difference in the capital city? And how do we improve this situation? Drawing upon recent research, this paper will offer sociological explanations to answer these questions. Moreover, it will further suggest strategies for enhancing the development of ethnic minorities in Beijing.

This paper will historically examine social development outcomes in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in respect to poverty eradication, education and employment, health care and social integration. Aporias Of Identity: Bicommunalism, Hybridity And The 'Cyprus Problem', Costas M. Constantinou

This article examines the predicaments and paradoxes of identity politics
in Cyprus. It looks at the historical alliance of colonial practices and
nationalist rationales that brought about a static bicommunal system,
establishing the basis for inter-ethnic conflict, or what became known as
the ‘Cyprus problem’. The advent of modern governmentality, dividing
and classifying the Cypriot population, helped, in addition, to solidify
fluid and ambiguous ethno-religious boundaries, making it more difficult
for individuals to use ethno-religious identities flexibly and pragmatically,
including their use as a tactic to resist the policies of consecutive

In fisheries, capacity analysis has largely been limited to measuring physical capacity, defined as the maximum amount of output that can be produced per unit of time, given existing plant and equipment and unrestricted availability of variable inputs. An economic measure of capacity can be defined as the maximum revenue attainable for the given fixed inputs, using relevant outputs and output prices. This paper examines these two approaches to capacity by applying data envelopment analysis to physical and economic input/output data for Danish North Sea trawlers. In many fisheries managed by quota systems fishermen are required to keep a logbook containing information about catches. No well functioning enforcement system is set up in connection with the logbooks, since the purpose is to assist biologists in making stock assessments. In this paper we consider a case where three market failures (a stock externality problem, a stock uncertainty problem and problems with measuring individual catches) arise simultaneously. It is shown that a stock tax and a tax on voluntary self- reported catches may solve these three problems. By taxing voluntary self-reported catches wemake use of logbook information. It …

CONTEXT: Current breast-feeding rates fall short of the recommendations set forth in Health People 2010. The Breast-feeding Attrition Prediction Tool (BAPT), administered in the postpartum period, has been useful in predicting breast-feeding attrition. However, assessing a woman's intention to breast-feed prior to birth would identify women at risk for breast-feeding attrition.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe a revised BAPT, administered antepartally that measures intention to breast-feed.

METHODS: The BAPT, comprising 94 items on a 6-point Likert-type scale, was translated into Spanish and back-translated for accuracy. The BAPT was then revised by reducing the number of items …

Three experiments assessed the influence of the Ebbinghaus illusion on size judgments that preceded verbal, grasp, or touch responses. Prior studies have found reduced effects of the illusion for the grip-scaling component of grasping, and these findings are commonly interpreted as evidence that different visual systems are employed for perceptual judgment and visually guided action. In the current experiments, the magnitude of the illusion was reduced by comparable amounts for grasping and for judgments that preceded grasping (Experiment 1). A similar effect was obtained prior to reaching to touch the targets (Experiment 2). The effect on verbal responses was apparent …

7. The History Of Children’S Hearsay: From Old Bailey To Post-Davis., Thomas D. Lyon, Raymond Lamagna

In Crawford v. Washington and Davis v. Washington, the United States Supreme Court profoundly changed how hearsay statements are analyzed under the Confrontation Clause. If a hearsay statement is “testimonial,” then the statement cannot be admitted against a criminal defendant unless the defendant had the opportunity to cross-examine the hearsay declarant. Testimonial statements include many, if not most, statements to law enforcement, particularly if elicited through structured interviews and captured on tape. The full reach of the “testimonial” concept, however, has not been determined.

This paper argues that regulatory measures affect the fixed costs of entering a market as well as the variable costs of servicing that market. The study has explained that market entry barriers limit the number of firms that can break even in a particular market. The higher the entry barrier relative to the size of the market, the smaller the number of firms that can break even after having incurred the entry cost. In the face of such entry costs, trade liberalisation, defined as a reduction in variable trade costs, would under realistic assumptions lead to an increase in trade …
