‘Where’S The Fisk In The Fiskebollen?’ Community-University Research Alliances - The Case Of Social Research For Sustainable Fisheries And Empowerment Through Research, Anthony A. Davis Dr,

Anthony A. Davis Dr,

This essay demonstrates the interdisciplinary methodology underscoring a multilevel research collaboration titled: 'Social Research for Sustainable Fisheries (SRSF)'. Sited in Northeastern Nova Scotia, this Community-University Research Alliance was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. SRSF researchers crafted a unique partnership with two fish harvester organizations, and a Mi'kmaq organization. This paper also highlights key issues concerning multilevel (individual, organizational and governmental) action and interdisciplinary research initiatives. Among these are the ways and means for negotiating and reconciling conflicting agendas, the meaning and substance of local empowerment, and the need for an outcomes commitment that moves …

The Political Economy Of Corporate Governance In South Africa, Stefan Andreasson Dec 2006

The Political Economy Of Corporate Governance In South Africa, Stefan Andreasson

Stefan Andreasson

This article examines the political and economic context of corporate governance reform in post-apartheid South Africa. It does so by situating the debate on corporate governance in a wider political economy context, ultimately anchored in the varieties of capitalism literature and emerging research in IPE on global pressures for convergence of corporate governance practices worldwide. In particular, the article examines how the Southern African political economy and global actors shape societal debates on corporate governance; what the role of the King Reports on Corporate Governance are in the reform process and ensuing legislation; and whether South Africa can construct a …

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree Robinson-Neal Dec 2006

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree Robinson-Neal

Andree Robinson-Neal

Community colleges in America developed out of a need to fill the gap between high school or technical education and university-level study. The two-year postsecondary experience which is typically offered at locations that are “community friendly” has attracted persons of color and those with more conservative economic means in ever-increasing numbers. Historically, these marginalized populations have experienced educational inequalities in larger numbers than other groups. As statistics show increasing enrollments from members of these groups, community colleges must provide and improve services that appropriately address both student need and societal demand. Students who are able to successfully obtain transfer to …

Introduction: Discourse, War And Terrorism, Adam Hodges, Chad Nilep

Adam Hodges

Discourse since September 11, 2001 has constrained and shaped public discussion and debate surrounding terrorism worldwide. Social actors in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere employ the language of the “war on terror” to explain, react to, justify and understand a broad range of political, economic and social phenomena. As outlined in this introductory chapter, this volume explores the discursive production of identities, the shaping of ideologies, and the formation of collective understandings in response to 9/11 in the United States and around the world.

The Political Economy Of Truth In The 'War On Terror' Discourse: Competing Visions Of An Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection, Adam Hodges Dec 2006

The Political Economy Of Truth In The 'War On Terror' Discourse: Competing Visions Of An Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

The textual analysis in this paper examines an interview with Vice-President Dick Cheney by Gloria Borger on CNBC’s 2004 Capital Report. The interview took place on 17 June 2004, the day after the 9/11 Commission released Staff Statement No. 15, a twelve page preliminary report that concluded no ‘‘collaborative relationship’’ existed between Iraq and al-Qaeda. The aim of the analysis is to show how the struggle over ‘‘truth’’ unfolds in micro-level discursive interaction and to underscore the way this process is embedded within and contributes to the circulation of truth claims associated with the macro-level War on Terror Discourse (WoTD).

Mandatory Gun Ownership, The Militia Census Of 1806, And Background Assumptions Concerning The Early American Right To Arms: A Cautious Response To Robert Churchill, William G. Merkel Dec 2006

Mandatory Gun Ownership, The Militia Census Of 1806, And Background Assumptions Concerning The Early American Right To Arms: A Cautious Response To Robert Churchill, William G. Merkel

William G. Merkel

In "Gun Ownership in Early America," published in the William and Mary Quarterly in 2003,' Robert Churchill drew on probate inventories and militia records to make the case that arms ownership was pervasive in late colonial, revolutionary, and early national America. Churchill concluded with the observation that "[i]t is time to ponder what these guns meant to their owners and how that meaning changed over time."'2 In his substantial contribution to this volume of Law and History Review,3 Churchill takes up that challenge himself and advances the claim that widespread arms ownership engendered a sense of possessory entitlement, and that …

El Voto Electrónico Y El Déficit Democrático Europeo, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Dec 2006

El Voto Electrónico Y El Déficit Democrático Europeo, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

From the first elections to the European Parliament in 1979, abstention has become one of the main characteristics of communitarian elections. The most sophisticated electronic vote systems have been implemented in Europe. Some of them have been suggested for the European Parliament elections, assuming that the electronic vote will increase citizens participation. This article claims that the restructuring of the European party system is what will rescue the European Parliament from its democratic deficit. If the implementation of electronic vote systems for communitarian elections takes place in a weak political context, the years of research and the invested resources might …

Direito À Informação Ou Deveres De Protecção Informativa Do Estado?,, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2006

Direito À Informação Ou Deveres De Protecção Informativa Do Estado?,, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Do Constitucionalismo Brasileiro: Uma Introdução Histórica (1824-1988), Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

It is not usual to write a constitutional history from the view point of a foreigner. This is a essai of a glimpse of Brazilian constitutional history from the perspective of a Portuguese, descending from Bazilians, descending from Portuguese. In spite of those circunstances, of course the aim was always the possible objectivity in History and in Constitutional Law History.

Innovation And Productivity In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Andrea Vaona Dec 2006

Innovation And Productivity In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Andrea Vaona

Mario Pianta

The labour productivity impact of innovation is investigated in this paper combining neo-Schumpeterian insights on the variety of innovation with the importance of industrial structures and firm size; two models are proposed for explaining productivity and export success in European manufacturing industries and firm-size classes. The empirical estimates are based on data from the European innovation survey (CIS 2), covering Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK, broken down by 22 sectors and for large, medium, and small firms. The econometric results, obtained adopting cross-sectional estimation methodologies able to account for unobserved industrial characteristics, show that productivity in Europe …

Demand And Innovation In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi Dec 2006

Demand And Innovation In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi

Mario Pianta

After the decade-old debate between demand-pull and technology-push perspectives, demand seems to have fallen out of fashion. In this paper two models are proposed on the determinants of general innovative activities and on the market impact of product innovations. The models combine the supply and demand engines of innovation, and qualify the type of innovative efforts, distinguishing between those oriented towards cost reductions or towards technological competitiveness. The models are tested at the industry level for 22 manufacturing sectors and 17 services sectors in six European countries. The results show that efforts at technological competitiveness, product oriented strategies and the …

Commercio Con L'Estero E Tecnologia In Italia Negli Anni Cinquanta E Sessanta, Mario Pianta, Matteo Gamellini

Mario Pianta

Industria, Mario Pianta Dec 2006

Industria, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta
