Human dimensions research focuses on the interrelationships between humans and the environment. To date, human dimensions research in arctic regions has concentrated primarily on local events and contexts. As such, it complements analysis elsewhere of adaptation and sustainable development within broad institutional, social, and environmental contexts. This paper reviews five projects from the Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC) initiative, established by the US National Science Foundation in 1997. Common themes and findings are highlighted: climatic variations or change affect societies through interactions with human activities; population dynamics provide key quantitative indicators of social impacts and well being; and …

Ocean and coastal areas of the United States contribute significantly to our nation’s overall economy. The extent to which our economy benefits from the wide range of marine and coastal activities is not completely understood. The National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP) has attempted to track and value the ocean and coastal- related economic activities in the United States. To date six sectors are included in its information system (www.oceaneconomics.org). The economic contribution of marine research and education institutions is a sector of activity that lies outside of the normal federal government datasets, but one which seemed to have growing importance …

Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su
Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su
Publications and Research
Critical race theory (CRT) has moved beyond legal scholarship to critique the ways in which “colorblind” laws and policies perpetuate existing racial inequalities in education policy. While criticisms of CRT have focused on the pessimism and lack of remedies presented, CRT scholars have begun to address issues of praxis. Specifically, communities of color must challenge the dominant narratives of mainstream institutions with alternative visions of pedagogy and school reform, and community organizing plays an important role in helping communities of color to articulate these alternative counter-narratives. Yet, many in education organizing disagree with CRT's critique of colorblindness. Drawing on five …

Management Control Systems Framework For R&D Organisation: A New Approach, Parulian Silaen, Robert Williams
Management Control Systems Framework For R&D Organisation: A New Approach, Parulian Silaen, Robert Williams
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The Research and Development (R&D) organisations by the nature of business activities will have to deal with higher level of uncertainty than that of a non R&D organisation. This has an effect on the organisational goal setting (Chenhall, 2003), planning system (McCaskey, 1974), and control systems (Hopwood, 1972; Simons, 1987; Williams et al, 1990; Chenhall, 2003, Bisbe and Otley, 2004). Therefore, question had been raised regarding the suitability of existing management control systems for such organisations (Cooper et. al., 1981; Abernethy & Stoelwinder, 1991; Chenhall, 2003). In recent years there has been an increasing interest on investigating the management control …
