Climate, Fishery And Society Interactions: Observations From The North Atlantic., Lawrence C. Hamilton
Climate, Fishery And Society Interactions: Observations From The North Atlantic., Lawrence C. Hamilton
Sociology
Interdisciplinary studies comparing fisheries-dependent regions across the North Atlantic find a number of broad patterns. Large ecological shifts, disastrous to historical fisheries, have resulted when unfavorable climatic events occur atop overfishing. The "teleconnections" linking fisheries crises across long distances include human technology and markets, as well as climate or migratory fish species. Overfishing and climate-driven changes have led to a shift downwards in trophic levels of fisheries takes in some ecosystems, from dominance by bony fish to crustaceans. Fishing societies adapt to new ecological conditions through social reorganization that have benefited some people and places, while leaving others behind. Characteristic …

Large Wet Lab Converted To Computer Lab For Studying Microscopic Anatomy, Martha Langley Ankeny, David Birk
Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations
Virtual microscopy has replaced microscopes representing a sea change in how microscopic anatomy is taught at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU).
The class of 2009 inaugurated virtual microscopy made possible by updating a wet laboratory with new computer stations. Virtual microscopy retains the learning features of microscopes while promoting the learning of relationships through small group interactions. Multi-station computers, equipped with new hardware technology that allows up to 5 monitors and keyboards to run from a single CPU, were installed providing a cost and space effective way to bring virtual microscopy to a large number of students in a small group …
Biomass And Biofuels In Maine: Estimating Supplies For Expanding The Forest Products Industry, Jonathan Rubin, Kate Dickerson, Jacob Kavkewitz
Biomass And Biofuels In Maine: Estimating Supplies For Expanding The Forest Products Industry, Jonathan Rubin, Kate Dickerson, Jacob Kavkewitz
Energy & the Environment
This paper estimates the renewable energy potential of Maine’s forest resources, and how much energy these resources could potentially provide the state. Using the most recent state-specific data available, and a methodology similar to the Billion Tons Report, we find that ethanol production from Maine’s forest residues could potentially provide 18% of Maine’s transportation (gasoline) fuels with a fermentation wood to ethanol process. Making Fischer-Tropsch diesel (F-T diesel) using forest residues can replace 39% of Maine’s petro-diesel consumption. Actual levels of biofuels that can be produced will depend on conversion factors and forestry residue removals that are subject to uncertainty.

Time-Series Intervention Analysis Using Itsacorr: Fatal Flaws, Bradley E. Huitema, Joseph W. Mckean, Sean Laraway
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The ITSACORR method (Crosbie, 1993, 1995) is evaluated for the analysis of two-phase interrupted time-series designs. It is shown that each component of the ITSACORR framework (including the structural model, the design matrix, the autocorrelation estimator, the ultimate parameter estimation scheme, and the inferential method) contains fatal flaws.
A Comparison Of Procedures For The Analysis Of Multivariate Repeated Measurements, Lisa M. Lix, Anita M. Lloyd
A Comparison Of Procedures For The Analysis Of Multivariate Repeated Measurements, Lisa M. Lix, Anita M. Lloyd
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Three procedures for analyzing within-subjects effects in multivariate repeated measures designs are compared when group covariances are heterogeneous: the multiple regression model (MRM) with a structured covariance, Johansen’s (1980) procedure, and the multivariate Brown and Forsythe (1974) procedure. A preliminary likelihood ratio test of a Kronecker product covariance structure is sensitive to sample size and derivational assumption violations. Error rates of the procedures are generally well-controlled except when the distribution is skewed. The MRM procedure displayed few power advantages over the other procedures.

This poster discusses technical aspects of an investigation into the use of non-destructive radiological analyses of pubic cancellous bone structure to estimate age-at-death from human skeletal remains. This study stems from findings, in X-ray plain films, of increased rarification and orientation of trabeculae with age [1]; likely in concert with the macroscopic remodelling of the symphyseal surface currently used in estimation of age-at-death.
The study uses three non-destructive X-ray imaging modalities: plain film radiography, computed tomography (CT), and micro-CT (μCT). Plain film radiography has greater spatial resolution than CT [2] and is relatively inexpensive, widely available, and, with portable X-ray …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Affective Interaction In Chronic Pain Couples, Ayna B. Johansen, Annmarie Cano
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
The objective of this preliminary study was to examine the extent to which affective marital interaction related to depressive symptoms in persons with chronic pain and their spouses and to pain severity in persons with pain. Couples from the community completed self-report surveys and engaged in a videotaped conversation on a topic of mutual disagreement that was coded for three affect types (i.e., anger/contempt, sadness, humor). Humor was positively related to marital satisfaction in both partners. Spouse anger/contempt and sadness were positively related to depressive symptoms in spouses. Several significant interaction effects between couple pain status (i.e., whether one or …

Perceptions Of Value And Value Beyond Perceptions: Measuring The Quality And Value Of Journal Article Readings., Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
Perceptions Of Value And Value Beyond Perceptions: Measuring The Quality And Value Of Journal Article Readings., Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
When measuring quality and value of journals, what is being measured, to whom does the value accrue, and why the measurement is being done must be considered. Both implicit and explicit measures of quality and value are possible. Preliminary results of ongoing readership research show that academic library e-journal collections have both purchase and use value to academic faculty. They spend their time reading, read many articles each year, and reading benefits their work in many ways.

Continual pressures-including competition from free web search engines, the escalating costs of keeping up with human-based indexing of proliferating journal articles, and customer desires for online system interconnections and bells and whistles-have arguably made this past ten years more challenging than the 90 before. Matthew J. Toussant, CAS senior VP of editorial operations, notes that "patents are now the leading source of new substance information in the CAS REGISTRY database and accounted for 63 percent of new substance records by CAS in 2006."

Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry
Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry
UCHC Articles - Research
This study determined whether, and by how much, the cost-effectiveness of contingency management (CM) varied across the eight clinics in the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network MIEDAR trial. Incremental costs, incremental outcomes, and incremental costeffectiveness ratios (ICERs) of CM compared to usual care were calculated, compared and contrasted for each of the clinics. Results showed that the incremental cost of using CM compared to usual care varied by a factor of 1.9 across the clinics, ranging from an additional $306 to an additional $582 per patient. The effect of CM on the longest duration of continuous stimulant …
Why Sarbanes-Oxley Whistleblowers Don’T Win, Richard E. Moberly
Why Sarbanes-Oxley Whistleblowers Don’T Win, Richard E. Moberly
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
Whistleblowers played a significant role in revealing and disrupting corporate malfeasance at the beginning of the 21st century, as scandals at corporations such as Enron and WorldCom came to public light through the efforts of whistleblowing employees. Subsequently, Congress recognized the importance of whistleblowing and included strong and unprecedented anti-retaliation protection for corporate employees as part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (the Act), the mammoth congressional reaction to these corporate scandals.
Despite Sarbanes-Oxley’s pro-whistleblower provisions and a few early employee victories, however, administrative decisions over the first three years of the Act’s life failed to fulfill these expectations that …

Historical Assessment And Archeological Survey Of 4.9 Miles Of Fm 2092 From Menard To Fivemile Crossing, Menard County, Texas, Jennifer K. Mcwilliams, Douglas K. Boyd, Celine Finney
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This preliminary report describes historical research and an intensive archeological survey conducted for a 4.9-mile-long stretch of FM 2092 in Menard County by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. The work was performed for the Texas Department of Transportation in conjunction with a road improvement project beginning at the eastern Menard city limit and extending eastward to just beyond Fivemile Crossing. Crossing over Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial terraces of the San Saba River, the project area is located in a high-probability area for buried prehistoric sites and has a dynamic history of intensive use since Spanish colonial times. Investigations included geoarcheological mapping, …

Optimal Trimming And Outlier Elimination, Philip H. Ramsey, Patricia P. Ramsey
Optimal Trimming And Outlier Elimination, Philip H. Ramsey, Patricia P. Ramsey
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Five data sets with known true values are used to determine the optimal number of pairs that should be trimmed in order to produce the minimum relative error. The optimal trimming in the five data sets is found to be 1%, 5%, 7%, 10% and 28%. The 28% rate is shown to be an outlier among the five data sets. Results of four data sets are used to establish cutoff values for outlier detection in two robust methods of outlier detection.
Multiple Comparison Of Medians Using Permutation Tests, Scott J. Richter, Melinda H. Mccann
Multiple Comparison Of Medians Using Permutation Tests, Scott J. Richter, Melinda H. Mccann
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A robust method is proposed for simultaneous pairwise comparison using permutation tests and median differences. The new procedure provides strong control of familywise error rate and has better power properties than the median procedure of Nemenyi/Levy. It can be more powerful than the Tukey-Kramer procedure using mean differences, especially for nonnormal distributions and unequal sample sizes.

The Non-Parametric Difference Score: A Workable Solution For Analyzing Two-Wave Change When The Measures Themselves Change Across Waves, Jennifer E. V. Lloyd, Bruno D. Zumbo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The non-parametric difference score is introduced. It is a workable solution to the problem of analyzing change over two waves (i.e., a pretest-posttest design) when the measures themselves vary over time. An example highlighting the solution’s implementation is provided, as is a discussion of the solution’s assumptions, strengths, and limitations.
The Effect Of Different Degrees Of Freedom Of The Chi-Square Distribution On The Statistical Power Of The T, Permutation T, And Wilcoxon Tests, Michèle Weber
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The Chi-square distribution is used quite often in Monte Carlo studies to examine statistical power of competing statistics. The power spectrum of the t-test, Wilcoxon test, and permutation t test are compared under various degrees of freedom for this distribution. The two t tests have similar power, which is generally less than the Wilcoxon.

Probability Coverage And Interval Length For Welch’S And Yuen’S Techniques: Shift In Location, Change In Scale, And (Un)Equal Sizes, S. Jonathan Mends-Cole
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Coverage for Welch’s technique was less than the confidence-level when size was inversely proportional to variance and skewness was extreme. Under negative kurtosis, coverage for Yuen’s technique was attenuated. Under skewness and heteroscedasticity, coverage for Yuen’s technique was more accurate than Welch’s technique.
Tests For 2 X 2 Tables In Clinical Trials, Vic Hasselblad, Yulia Lokhnygina
Tests For 2 X 2 Tables In Clinical Trials, Vic Hasselblad, Yulia Lokhnygina
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Five standard tests are compared: chi-squared, Fisher's exact, Yates’ correction, Fisher’s exact mid-p, and Barnard’s. Yates’ is always inferior to Fisher’s exact. Fisher’s exact is so conservative that one should look for alternatives. For certain sample sizes, Fisher’s mid-p or Barnard’s test maintain the nominal alpha and have superior power.
