Explaining The Ineffectiveness Of The Convention On The Prevention And Punishment Of The Crime Of Genocide: The Leadership Of The Hegemon, Betsy Lynn Montgomery Nov 2007

Explaining The Ineffectiveness Of The Convention On The Prevention And Punishment Of The Crime Of Genocide: The Leadership Of The Hegemon, Betsy Lynn Montgomery

Political Science Theses

This thesis examines the role of the hegemon in the international response to genocide. The study looks specifically at the role of the United States and the post Cold War cases of genocide to determine how the United States encouraged or discouraged a response to genocide. By using the plausibility probe method, this study finds that the role of the hegemon is an important one that should be studied further to understand the impact of the hegemon on the international response to genocide.

Agribusiness

Mixed farming systems are defined by Sere and Steinfeld (1996) as those in which more than 10% of the dry matter fed to livestock comes from crop by-products or stubble, and more than 10% of the value of production comes from non-livestock farming activities. More simply, they are systems where livestock rearing and crop cultivation are, to a greater or lesser extent, integrated components of one farming system. The more integrated systems are characterized by interdependency between crop and livestock activity, optimizing circulation of locally available nutrients. The less integrated systems are those in which crop and livestock activities make …

Evaluative Inquiry: The Road To A Learning Organization, Antonia Pérez Bolívar

Capstone Collection

This study looks at the effects of evaluative inquiry as a tool for organizational development in the “Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural”(CELEI), a small educational institution. The study is framed as an action research and its purpose is to initiate a process of organizational change that will consolidate the newly established institution and to introduce learning as a built-in organizational strategy. The study is structured as a meta-research on the evaluative inquiry intervention. The intervention was a cooperative effort carried out by an in-house evaluation team and the participation of all staff members. As Action Research, the evaluation process …

The Librarian As Hacker, Getting More From Google, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

This paper will cover four areas. First it will discuss the research habits of search engine users and some of the problems with these habits. Then it will discuss librarians' use of search engines. Here we encounter the real question: Do we do much better? Can we use a search engines to their full potential? When needed, can we hack an engine to make it perform beyond its intended function? Can we use a clever workaround to solve a problem? Or are we on a level playing field with our patrons once we get outside traditional database searching? Google currently …

Representing Ejournals In The Library Catalog, Kelly Smith

Kelly Smith

Academic library catalogs as they currently exist are essentially static databases – they are searchable versions of card catalogs. Even the display in many systems resembles the old-fashioned card. By contrast, eJournals (and websites and eBooks, for that matter) contain dynamic information. URLs change, platforms change, vendors change, the same title is hosted on multiple changing platforms. Is it possible with today’s library catalog to effectively present metadata for online formats when each change must be input manually? Can the catalog truly represent a complete listing of our holdings in this dynamic and largely unstable electronic publishing model? This presentation …

The Equator Principles, Project Finance And The Challenge Of Social And Environmental Responsibility, Jane Andrew Nov 2007

The Equator Principles, Project Finance And The Challenge Of Social And Environmental Responsibility, Jane Andrew

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The Equator Principles, launched in 2003 and revamped in 2006, are a set of voluntary principles designed to help private lenders make socially and environmentally responsible project financing decisions. This paper explores the impact of these principles on the disclosures of two signatory banks, focusing on type of information disclosures that have resulted and the substance of these disclosures. The work considers whether it is possible to ascertain from publicly available information how the practices of the banks may have changed in order to focus on their stated social and environmental responsibilities. It is concluded that although the Equator Principles …

The Relationship Between Reported Out-Of-Class English Use And Proficiency Gains In English, Denisa Krizanova Cundick Nov 2007

The Relationship Between Reported Out-Of-Class English Use And Proficiency Gains In English, Denisa Krizanova Cundick

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship of out-of-class English use and proficiency gains. It also explored the relationship of gender, proficiency level and native language and the possible effect of these demographics on out-of-class English use and language gains in English. Though some studies have shown that those who spend more out-of-class time using the target language have higher language gain (Seliger, 1977), other studies have not found this to be true (Day, 1985; Freed 1990; Spada, 1986). Some reasons for the discrepancy in findings may be differences in the length of the time data is collected, samples of study participants …

The End(S) Of The State(?), Daniel J. Whelan Nov 2007

The End(S) Of The State(?), Daniel J. Whelan

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Last February, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote an op-ed that anticipated Klein’s article, in part. In his view, the Bush administration has been engaged in an effort to “Green-Zone” the United States government by gutting the professional civil service—dubbed as “the enemy” by the American Enterprise Institute—and replacing its ranks with political appointees who have little interest or experience in running a state, but quite a bit of interest in enriching the private sector with public largesse. Klein’s “Disaster Capitalism” takes Krugman’s theme and pumps up the volume ten-fold.

Employee Commitment In U.S. And Japanese Firms In Thailand, Richard A. Colignon, Chikako Usui, Harold Kerbo, Robert Slagter

Social Sciences

Foreign direct investment from transnational corporations across Southeast Asia provides an opportunity to examine the cross-cultural workplace. Most research on cross-cultural workplace takes place in developed countries, but little has been done on the cross-cultural workplace in developing countries. We examine the extent and determinants of organizational commitment among 959 Thai employees in 10 Japanese and American transplant corporations in the Bangkok area. These data were supplemented with in-depth interviews of Thai, Japanese and US managers in 24 transplant corporations and follow-up interviews. Consistent with the literature, we found higher levels of identification and behavioral commitment among employees of U. …

Robots And Rodents: Children's Inferences About Living And Nonliving Kinds, Jennifer L. Jipson, Susan A. Gelman

Psychology and Child Development

This study tests the firm distinction children are said to make between living and nonliving kinds. Three, 4-, and 5-year-old children and adults reasoned about whether items that varied on 3 dimensions (alive, face, behavior) had a range of properties (biological, psychological, perceptual, artifact, novel, proper names). Findings demonstrate that by 4 years of age, children make clear distinctions between prototypical living and nonliving kinds regardless of the property under consideration. Even 3-year-olds distinguish prototypical living and nonliving kinds when asked about biological properties. When reasoning about nonbiological properties for the full range of items, however, even 5-year-olds and adults …

Do Tobacco-Control Programs Lower Tobacco Consumption? Evidence From California, Michael L. Marlow Nov 2007

Do Tobacco-Control Programs Lower Tobacco Consumption? Evidence From California, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

California is often considered the model for tobacco-control programs due to its early adoption of comprehensive programs aimed at lowering tobacco consumption. Tobacco control began when voters approved the California Tobacco Tax and Health Promotion Act of 1988. More than $2 billion has been spent on tobacco-control in California since 1988. The findings of this article indicate that tobacco-control spending is a significant factor for the widening gap between consumption in the United States and in California only in equations that exclude cigarette prices and smoking bans as control variables. When significant, however, estimates suggest that, for every $1 increase …

Teaching Information Evaluation And Critical Thinking Skills In Physics Classes, Adriana Popescu, James Morgan

Library Scholarship

The physics curriculum at all educational levels can be enriched to include tools for strengthening students' information evaluation skills. The Report of the Joint APS-AAPT Task Force on Graduate Education in Physics calls for such training to be part of graduate programs, but training to acquire these lifetime skills can be incorporated in the curriculum even before graduate level.
