Managing Up: Subtle But Effective Communication With The “Powers That Be”, Lindsay L. Van Sicklen
Managing Up: Subtle But Effective Communication With The “Powers That Be”, Lindsay L. Van Sicklen
The Christian Librarian
There are plenty of resources on managing employees but only in recent years has there been an emphasis on managing those to whom we report. The article entitled “Social Styles and the Art of Managing Up” by John R. Darling published in the Journal of Academic Librarianship in 1987 was the springboard for a lively discussion that included seven library directors and eight individuals from a variety of positions.
An Unhealthy Case Of Mold, Mary S. Lane
An Unhealthy Case Of Mold, Mary S. Lane
The Christian Librarian
Mold is a serious problem which threatens the well-being of both collections and staff. Preventative maintenance and a good disaster plan are the most effective way of handling mold. However, unforeseen circumstances can infect a library; in which case, librarians must be able to recognize and treat the problem immediately. Finances can affect the manner in which the mold is cleaned. Librarians need to be aware of a variety of options open to them, as well as, a variety of resources upon whom to call in the event of a breakout. A low budget process is presented as an alternative …
The G. Allen Fleece Library Goes To Prison, Jo Ann Rhodes
The G. Allen Fleece Library Goes To Prison, Jo Ann Rhodes
The Christian Librarian
Preparing a library and setting up library services in a state prison setting presents some unique challenges for the planners. The librarians at the G. Allen Fleece Library at Columbia International University have recently faced such a challenge as they participated with other college officials in the Prison Initiative Program planning and preparation. Tools provided by the Association of Christian Librarians proved exceptionally helpful in the planning and preparation of the library, and in its usability once the program began.
Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Communication Faculty Publications
As online social communities (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) grow in popularity and become commonplace, these same communities also become sites of information exchange through various communication channels (eg. text, visual, aural). With these exchanges occurring either individually or collectively, sets of questions arise regarding the community, the value of information within that community, and how/what/why they choose to communicate what they do within such a space. By applying Sandra Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory and Michel Foucault’s discussion of the Panopticon, a rhetorical critique of user decisions regarding private information within Myspace.Com can be conducted. The knowledge uncovered adds insight into …
Newspaper Vs. Non-Newspaper Litigants In The U.S. Supreme Court, 1964-2001, Edward L. Carter, James C. Phillips
Newspaper Vs. Non-Newspaper Litigants In The U.S. Supreme Court, 1964-2001, Edward L. Carter, James C. Phillips
Faculty Publications
Newspapers have been involved as litigants in some of the most significant First Amendment cases to come before the U.S. Supreme Court. Particularly since the groundbreaking case New York Times Co. v. Sullivan in 1964, newspapers have played a prominent role in Supreme Court cases that have defined many important points of First Amendment doctrine and have tested the nation's commitment to freedom of expression. Newspapers have successfully challenged, among other regulations, strict liability for defamation, a mandatory right of reply for political candidates, prior restraint of publication and a courtroom closure order in a high-profile state murder trial. But …
The Perceived Psychosocial Benefits Of Pet Ownership On Child Development: A Parental Perspective, Erin K. Leahy
The Perceived Psychosocial Benefits Of Pet Ownership On Child Development: A Parental Perspective, Erin K. Leahy
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this review is to explore the beneficial role pets play in facilitating the psychosocial development of preadolescent children. It is proposed that the pet is perceived by both the child and parent as a developmental resource during preadolescent development, as it assists the child in accomplishing key developmental tasks such as responsibility and autonomy, socialisation and the development of humanistic qualities. This review also highlights the importance of pets in assisting preadolescents develop self esteem and identity, and examines how pets give children new perspective on important life matters such as birth, illness and death. Attainment of …

Ward, Lester Frank (1841-1913), Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Lester Frank Ward, a man of modest origins born in Joliet, Illinois, was a major architect of American sociology. Prior to Ward's election to the first presidency (1906-7) of the American Sociological Society (ASS, now the American Sociological Association), academic sociology in the US had no independent national disciplinary organization save the unifying voice of the American Journal of Sociology, then edited by Albion W. Small at the University of Chicago. The ASS, under Lester Ward's pi
Thailand And Myanmar: Permanent Enemies Turned Friends?, Pornpimon Trichot
Thailand And Myanmar: Permanent Enemies Turned Friends?, Pornpimon Trichot
Asian Review
Historically Thailand has viewed Burma/Myanmar as the "national enemy." Until the end of the Cold War, the main stakeholders of Thai foreign policy towards Burma were the security agencies which viewed Burma in this light. Yet on the ground, the long border developed a vibrant economy. Policy was reoriented in the late 1980s. The Burmese government wanted better relations with Thailand in order to deal with political threats, spur its economy, and solidify relations with ASEAN. In Thailand, business-based politicians took power and became new stakeholders in making foreign policy. Under policies initiated in the Chatichai era and upheld by …

Politics, Porn, Pisok: A Study Of Contemporary Minahasa, Indonesia, Philipp Borgs
Asian Review
Indonesia has been subject to huge changes after the fall of Suharto in 1998. Inter-ethnic and inter-religious problems that remained under the surface suddenly erupted and led to violent clashes between different groups in many parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Interestingly, North Sulawesi has not been subject to such incidents yet. Even though it has one of the highest numbers of Christians in Indonesia, the region remains stable and peaceful. This article analyzes this province with a focus on the districts of Minahasa. The ethnic Minahasans played a special role both during the Dutch colonial era and the early years …

Laos: A Reserve For Thai Growth, Supalak Ganjanakhundee
Laos: A Reserve For Thai Growth, Supalak Ganjanakhundee
Asian Review
The ending of the Cold War in the 1980s ushered in a new era in relations between Thailand and Laos. Old security concerns were replaced by a focus on economic relations. On the Thai side, business politicians and like-minded technocrats drove policymaking. On the Lao side, leaders welcomed foreign investment to overcome the legacy of war and poor economic management. But Laos has become nervous about Thai economic domination, and sensitive to cultural subordination. The recent rise of China as an investor in Laos presents new problems for both Laos and Thailand.
Irrigation Reforms In Rural Laos: A Study Of Farmers' Affordability, Arounyadeth Rasphone, Fumio Osanami, Takumi Kondo
Irrigation Reforms In Rural Laos: A Study Of Farmers' Affordability, Arounyadeth Rasphone, Fumio Osanami, Takumi Kondo
Asian Review
This article examines the affordability of irrigation under irrigation reform schemes in rural Laos through a regression analysis of factors affecting the affordability under a scheme in Savannakhet Province. The ability to afford irrigation is influenced by seasonal conditions; social factors, especially the education level of the household head; market factors, especially the paddy price; and the size of landholding. Government should promote policies to increase the level of education in rural areas, improve the operation of the paddy market, and find ways to improve productivity to offset the declining availability of land.

Basic Communication Course Annual
Now in its nineteenth year, the Basic Communication Course Annual continues to serve as an important outlet within the discipline for scholarship related to the way we teach, manage, and evaluate the basic course. Each year the Annual offers some of the best research on basic course pedagogy helping to position it as the primary source for teachers and scholars working to improve the quality of the basic course at their respective institutions. The Annual's success has always been attributed to the community of scholars who continue to support the journal as contributors, editorial board members, and its readership. I …

Designing Classroom Management Training For Basic Course Instructors, Kevin R. Meyer, Cheri J. Simonds, Brent K. Simonds, John R. Baldwin, Stephen K. Hunt, Mark E. Comadena
Basic Communication Course Annual
Since many basic course training programs fail to adequately address classroom management issues, most graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) enter the classroom unprepared to confront student misbehaviors. However, literature suggests that by incorporating classroom management issues into training programs, GTAs will be better armed to establish the instructional climate of the classroom and confront student misbehaviors. In this study, GTAs who had not received classroom management training (CMT) were given a survey containing closed and open-ended questions regarding typical student misbehaviors, possible classroom responses to those behaviors, and preferences for classroom management information during training. The results of this study identify …
Creating Sites For Connection In The Classroom: Dialogism As A Pedagogy For Active Learning, Melissa A. Broeckelman
Creating Sites For Connection In The Classroom: Dialogism As A Pedagogy For Active Learning, Melissa A. Broeckelman
Basic Communication Course Annual
Public speaking pedagogy should be based in communication theory, but as a whole, our discipline has failed to integrate theory and praxis in the classroom. Dialogism is a good starting point for developing theory-based pedagogical strategies and is further supported by Vygotsky’s zones of proximal development, Dewey and Bruner’s call for experience-based learning, and research on collaborative learning. Here, I propose four specific strategies for incorporating dialogism into the pedagogy of public speaking courses: (a) use detailed grading rubrics to create a shared meaning of expectations before, during, and after the speech-building process, (b) give instructor feedback on outlines prior …
Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla
Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study investigated how female graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) develop social support and the influence that these relationships have on their academic, teaching, and social lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven female GTAs in a Communication Studies master’s degree program at a large southern university. Results revealed that participants formed closer, more personal relationships with other graduate students, specifically other GTAs, and that these relationships influenced their academic lives, including teaching. Participants formed meaningful but more formal relationships with faculty. Relationships with faculty had little influence on their teaching but influenced their graduate coursework and post-graduate plans.
Evolution Analysis Of Iterative Lmmse-App Detection For Coded Linear System With Cyclic Prefixes, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping
Evolution Analysis Of Iterative Lmmse-App Detection For Coded Linear System With Cyclic Prefixes, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This paper is concerned with the iterative detection principles for coded linear systems with cyclic prefixes. We derive a matrix-form low-cost fast Fourier transform (FFT) based iterative LMMSE-APP detector and propose an evolution technique for the performance evaluation of the proposed detector. Numerical results show a good match between simulation and evolution prediction. ©2007 IEEE.
Contact Element Method With Two Relative Coordinates And Its Application To Prediction Of Strip Profile Of A Sendzimir Mill, Hai-Liang Yu, Xiang-Hua Liu, Gyoo-Taek Lee
Contact Element Method With Two Relative Coordinates And Its Application To Prediction Of Strip Profile Of A Sendzimir Mill, Hai-Liang Yu, Xiang-Hua Liu, Gyoo-Taek Lee
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
A new numerical method, Contact Element Method with Two Relative Coordinates, has been developed. The main features of this method are that element meshing depends on the contact length between rolls or between the work roll and the strip, and that each element has two relative coordinates based on two separate contact objects. With this method, a program code “Setup Models for Sendzimir Mill” (SM4SM) has been developed for prediction of the strip profile of a 20-high Sendzimir mill with double AS-U-Roll systems. The strip profiles are predicted under various rolling conditions, such as the positions of AS-U racks, the …
An Evaluation Of The Usefulness Of Cash Flow Ratios To Predict Financial Distress, Leonie Jooste
An Evaluation Of The Usefulness Of Cash Flow Ratios To Predict Financial Distress, Leonie Jooste
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Purpose: With the introduction of the cash flow statement it became an integral part of financial reporting. A need arose to develop ratios for the effective evaluation of cash flow information. This article investigates cash flow ratios suggested by various researchers and suggests a list of ratios with the potential to predict financial failure. Design: The cash flow ratios suggested by researchers, from as early as 1966, are investigated and eight cash flow ratios selected for inclusion in an analysis to predict financial failure. Ten failed entities are selected for a cash flow evaluation by means of the selected ratios …
Discretionary Expenditure And Tourism Consumption: Insights From A Choice Experiment, G. I. Crouch, H. Oppewal, T. Huybers, Sara Dolnicar, J. J. Louviere, T. Devinney
Discretionary Expenditure And Tourism Consumption: Insights From A Choice Experiment, G. I. Crouch, H. Oppewal, T. Huybers, Sara Dolnicar, J. J. Louviere, T. Devinney
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Consumers’ decisions to spend money on tourism occur in the context of the other potential uses of their resources and corresponding values or utilities. While many studies have examined the demand for travel and tourism there is no known study that reveals how individuals and households make tradeoffs when allocating their spending between various potential categories of discretionary expenditure. This study assesses these tradeoffs empirically through the conduct of a choice experiment on a random sample of Australian consumers. The results provide insight into how each category of discretionary expenditure is valued and how spending in each category competes for …
Travel Agency Marketing Strategy: Insights From Switzerland, Sara Dolnicar, C. Laesser
Travel Agency Marketing Strategy: Insights From Switzerland, Sara Dolnicar, C. Laesser
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper provides insight into alternative strategies for travel agencies in a matured travel market with a high internet penetration. Discounting arguments that claim that there will be no need for travel agents in future, two possible roles for travel agents can be derived from theory and prior studies in the field: travel agents can survive if they focus on specific specialized services, such as travel consultation (specialization; hypothesizing that systematic differences exist between the usage of travel agents for different travel contexts), and travel agents can survive if they focus on specific segments of the market, such as older …
The International Volunteering Market: Market Segments And Competitive Relations, Sara Dolnicar, Melanie J. Randle
The International Volunteering Market: Market Segments And Competitive Relations, Sara Dolnicar, Melanie J. Randle
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The number of nonprofit and social agencies relying on the help of volunteers has grown enormously in recent decades. This has lead to increased competition between these organisations for the limited resources available, and the growing adoption of what have traditionally been considered ‘commercial’ business techniques such as marketing. There have been calls for greater and more sophisticated use of ‘tried and tested’ marketing concepts such as competition, segmentation, and positioning to help volunteering organisations manage this pressure effectively. This study shines the spotlight on individuals who volunteer for multiple types of organisations in an effort to determine which organisations …
Desalination And Recycling: Australians Raise Health, Environment And Cost Concerns, Sara Dolnicar, A. Schafer
Desalination And Recycling: Australians Raise Health, Environment And Cost Concerns, Sara Dolnicar, A. Schafer
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Desalination and recycling are hot topics in Australia, with considerable public opposition to both technologies in a country that is desperately short of water. The authors have done new research which show that, while the results are “very clear”, the lack of knowledge among the population makes their choices less than informed.
