Comparative Practices & Perspectives: Gender, Development And Empowerment In Uttarakhand, India And Northern Virginia, Sara Duke Jan 2008

Comparative Practices & Perspectives: Gender, Development And Empowerment In Uttarakhand, India And Northern Virginia, Sara Duke

Theses and Dissertations

The following thesis is a qualitative comparative case study which investigated the values, practices, perspectives, and strategies of Indian and American community organizers (practitioners and volunteers of non-profits and non-governmental organizations) who use microfinance, including savings schemes, as an instrument within the social intermediation process of developing disadvantaged women's capacities for self-sufficiency/empowerment. The focused inquiry was conducted through similarly structured in-depth interviews of directors, staff members and volunteers/community-based organizers of a women's business center in Northern Virginia, a large U.S. metropolitan area, and a women's federation in the rural Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. Interview questions focused on savings, social intermediation, …

Adjusting The Value Of A Statistical Life For Age And Cohort Effects, W. Kip Viscusi, Joseph E. Aldy Jan 2008

Adjusting The Value Of A Statistical Life For Age And Cohort Effects, W. Kip Viscusi, Joseph E. Aldy

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

To resolve the theoretical ambiguity in the effect of age on the value of statistical life (VSL), this article uses a novel, age-dependent fatal risk measure to estimate age-specific hedonic wage regressions. VSL exhibits an inverted-U shaped relationship with age. In the year 2000 cross-section, workers' VSL rises from $3.7 million (ages 18-24), to $9.7 million (35-44), and declines to $3.4 million (55-62). Controlling for birth-year cohort effects in a minimum distance estimator yields a peak VSL of $7.8 million at age 46, and flattens the VSL-age relationship. The value of statistical life-year also follows an inverted-U shape with age.

Large Domestic Pits On The Northwest Coast Of North America, Kenneth M. Ames, Cameron M. Smith, Alexander Bourdeau Jan 2008

Large Domestic Pits On The Northwest Coast Of North America, Kenneth M. Ames, Cameron M. Smith, Alexander Bourdeau

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Excavations of prehistoric and contact-period houses on the southern Northwest Coast of North America have exposed very large interior pit complexes. The complexes are either long trenches or rows of pits beneath the house floors. They are associated with substantial permanently occupied houses dated to between 300 CAL B.G. and A.D. 1830. The pits add significantly to the storage potentials of these houses and suggest surplus production.

The Slave, The Fetus, The Body: Articulating Biopower And The Pregnant Woman, Kevin Kuswa, Paul Achter, Elizabeth Lauzon Jan 2008

The Slave, The Fetus, The Body: Articulating Biopower And The Pregnant Woman, Kevin Kuswa, Paul Achter, Elizabeth Lauzon

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Many slaveholders attempted to justify the institution of slavery in the United States by claiming that the practice of slavery was actually in the interests of the slaves themselves. Not only are these arguments invalid because they justify inhumane treatment and the imprisonment of innocent human beings, they also contain a dangerous paternalism (a “speaking for”) that has not vacated the social sphere. Indeed, this same logic—the notion that bodies can be regulated and controlled for their own protection—is presently being used to speak for the fetus in order to justify fetal rights. Borrowing from Berlant (1997), these fetal rights …

“The Mormon Education Of A Gentile Justice: George Sutherland And Brigham Young Academy”, Edward L. Carter, James C. Phillips Jan 2008

“The Mormon Education Of A Gentile Justice: George Sutherland And Brigham Young Academy”, Edward L. Carter, James C. Phillips

Faculty Publications

Even within the eclectic group of men and women who have sat on the U.S. Supreme Court, Associate Justice George Sutherland (1922-38) was truly one of a kind: The only Justice ever to come from the state of Utah, he grew up as a non-Mormon in a cloistered 19th century Mormon society—and yet he rose to become one of the community’s most popular and even beloved political figures. As a lawyer, Sutherland defended Mormon men charged with “unlawful cohabitation” for polygamous lifestyles—and yet as a U.S. Senator he championed women’s rights, including suffrage. As one of the so-called “Four Horsemen …

The American Hegemonic Responses To The U.S.-China Mid-Air Plane Collision, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Jan 2008

The American Hegemonic Responses To The U.S.-China Mid-Air Plane Collision, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This paper examines the major documents of the American side concerning the U.S.- China mid-air plane collision incident, which occurred April 1, 2001. Through the hegemonic theoretical lens of Robert Cox’s frame of action and via the research method of hermeneutics of the selected rhetorical artifacts, we aim to shed light on the understanding of the incident and provide insightful implications for handling similar international conflicts in the future. Our findings indicate that the United States has preserved the most resourceful material capabilities and established all the necessary human institutions to implement its shared notion of American hegemony all over …

Public Relations Through A New Lens—Critical Praxis Via The Excellence Theory, Adam W. Tyma Jan 2008

Public Relations Through A New Lens—Critical Praxis Via The Excellence Theory, Adam W. Tyma

Communication Faculty Publications

The “Excellence Theory” (J.E. Grunig et al., 2002) was initially developed, and is continually being tested, in order to demonstrate what makes for public relations practices that are both efficient and ethical for all parties involved. There is criticism which purports that such a normalizing theory is no longer relevant for current social, political, or corporate realities encountered by the public relations practitioner or researcher. This essay presents the “Excellence Theory” as a critical inquiry paradigm, allowing for the creation of spaces accessible by otherwise marginalized publics by the public relations practitioner.

The Effects Of Interpersonal And Informational Justice On Perceptions Of An Authority Figure, Kevin M. Schultze Jan 2008

The Effects Of Interpersonal And Informational Justice On Perceptions Of An Authority Figure, Kevin M. Schultze

The Corinthian

There are several traits and characteristics that people may use to judge an authority based on how that authority acts and treats those under him or her. However, are there times when an authority can influence his or her own reputation among subordinates simply by the type of task he or she provides, or the level of information he or she presents? Prior evidence has suggested that perceptions of authorities are influenced by a number of qualities. The purpose of this experiment was to test how the nature of a task and whether a rationale is provided for the task …

Factor Structure Of The Life Orientation Test And Life Orientation Test- Revised: The Influence Of Item Framing, Jamie Moore Jan 2008

Factor Structure Of The Life Orientation Test And Life Orientation Test- Revised: The Influence Of Item Framing, Jamie Moore

Theses : Honours

Historically psychological scales have used a mix of positively keyed and negatively keyed items (balanced scales) to control for the effects of response sets. While it has been established that the use of balanced scales does effectively control for response sets such as acquiescence, issues relating to the psychometric properties of these scales emerge. The following review investigated issues surrounding the reliability, validity and factor structure of balanced scales by considering whether these issues were caused by positively and negatively keyed items measuring different aspects of a construct or whether they emerged simply due to measurement error. Both these positions …

The Impact Of The Japanese Purchases Of U.S. Treasuries On The Dollar/Yen Exchange Rate, Andre V. Mollick, Gokce Soydemir Jan 2008

The Impact Of The Japanese Purchases Of U.S. Treasuries On The Dollar/Yen Exchange Rate, Andre V. Mollick, Gokce Soydemir

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article connects net Japanese purchases of U.S. Treasury securities and the U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yields to the yen/dollar exchange rate. VAR estimations suggest that a one-time increase in net Japanese purchases has an immediate negative effect on U.S. long bond yields but a short-lived delayed yen depreciation. Further, a one-time increase in the U.S. long yield leads to an immediate yen depreciation. Our results support the hypothesis that Japanese investors, who are major holders of U.S. debt and face extremely low interest rates domestically, influence the dollar/yen rate in a financially integrated world.

The Benefits Of Pet Ownership For Single Adults In Midlife, Lauren Mcgillivray Jan 2008

The Benefits Of Pet Ownership For Single Adults In Midlife, Lauren Mcgillivray

Theses : Honours

Pets are shown to enhance quality of life through support and companionship. Midlife is a time where pets may be most valuable, since it is a time that involves critical changes to intimate relationships, roles and status. In this article a critical review of the literature on midlife development and demographic trends was carried out. Further, the psychological literature on human-pet relationships was reviewed and integrated with midlife research. Evidence for the psychological and physical benefits of pets is examined and the implications and potential benefits for middle aged adults are discussed. Findings suggest that pets may help to reduce …

Archaeoparasitology, Karl J. Reinhard, Adauto Araújo

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Parasites are the major cause of ill health and early death in the world today. Malaria, sleeping sickness, amoebic dysentery, and hookworm infection are examples of commonplace parasitic diseases that are endemic in most parts of the world (see Health, Healing, and Disease). They were significant threats in prehistory, especially in cultures whose social complexity outstripped the development of effective sanitation, hygiene, and germ theory awareness.

Local Archives And Teaching The History Of Sociology: Experiences At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Opportunities to teach and conduct research on the local disciplinary history of sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are limited only by one’s imagination and the pragmatic realities of classroom constraints. Over the years, I have been privileged to introduce Nebraska students to many particulars of the local sociological record via guest lectures in courses and colloquia, standalone PowerPoint slide shows, archival displays, informational brochures, various publications, and by distributing extensive compilations of pertinent documents on compact discs. Most recently, I included a one-and-a-half-week segment on the history of Nebraska sociology in an Introduction to Sociology course (Hill 2007c), employing …

Institutional Ownership And Firm’S Dividend Policy, Jinlan Ni Jan 2008

Institutional Ownership And Firm’S Dividend Policy, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper examines the linkage between dividend policy and institutional ownership within the context of the dividend model of Allen, Bernardo and Welch (2000). Specifically, it provides an empirical test of Allen, Bernardo and Welch (2000)’s novel implication that a tax differential between institutions and retail investors effects dividend policies. Using merge data of US industrial firms from 1980-2002, our results indicate that the dividend paying decision is positively related with institutional ownership. That is, firms with higher institutional ownership are more likely to be dividend payers. Further, we find that the deferred tax or tax credits that the institutional …

The Narcotics Problems In Burma: Insurgency, Drugs, Politics, And Poverty, Jesse Earle Odum Jan 2008

The Narcotics Problems In Burma: Insurgency, Drugs, Politics, And Poverty, Jesse Earle Odum

Asian Review

The illegal drug problem in Burma is alarming and affects not only Southeast Asia, but the entire world. The problem has been shaped by decades of internal conflict. Fighting between ethnic groups began before Burma's independence. The country has not had a moment of peace since independence from British colonization. The aggressive military junta continues to destroy the licit economy in Burma and continues to destroy opportunities for the country to receive much needed foreign aid and assistance. The military government has created an environment that condones and indirectly encourages involvement in the drug trade and other illicit activities. The …

Investigating Racial Disparity At The Detention Decision: The Role Of Respectability, Don L. Kurtz, Travis Linnemann, Ryan E. Spohn Jan 2008

Investigating Racial Disparity At The Detention Decision: The Role Of Respectability, Don L. Kurtz, Travis Linnemann, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

A concern over inequity and the existence of racial disparity of youth served by the juvenile justice system has long been a topic of considerable interest among scholars, policymakers, and court offi cials. Numerous empirical studies undertaken by academics and various public and private organizations have attempted to shed some light on this phenomenon. Research fi ndings on disproportionate minority contact have hardly been uniform, leaving much of this practice unexplained. This study uses data obtained at the detention decision point over a three-year period examining variance in juvenile case processing related to race. Findings suggest that extra-legal factors influencing …

Khmer Rouge Children's Songs, Thun Theara Jan 2008

Khmer Rouge Children's Songs, Thun Theara

Asian Review

During the Khmer Rouge years (1975-9), children were taught to sing songs which indoctrinated and inculcated them to serve the revolutionary glory. At the same time, children were made to toil very hard for long hours every day with empty stomachs. The content of the songs was intended to inspire children to work for the Khmer Rouge in building a new society. These songs linger in the memory of the present-living "children."
