Traditional Pedagogical Tools: Examining Peer Feedback In The Basic Communication Course, Julie Semlak Jan 2008

Traditional Pedagogical Tools: Examining Peer Feedback In The Basic Communication Course, Julie Semlak

Basic Communication Course Annual

Peer feedback is used in many basic communication courses, yet little is known about the pedagogical value of the written peer feedback provided for speakers, or the process of providing peer feedback. Using social learning theory as a theoretical foundation, this study explores the use of peer feedback in the basic communication course.

Findings indicate the content of peer feedback is less useful than instructor feedback for preparing future speeches. However, this study also reveals the process of providing peer feedback provides a model for vicarious learning, allowing basic course students to critically analyze a speech presented by a peer. …

Grade Distributions In The Basic Public Speaking Course: Exploring The Differences And Pedagogical Implications Of Faculty Rank, Holly J. Payne, Sally O. Hastings

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines differences in grade distributions in the introductory public speaking course at two American universities based on instructor rank. A sample of 442 sections with 11,381 students over a 2-year period was collected and analyzed using analysis of variance and chi-square analysis. We found significant differences in grade distributions, with instructors assigning lower grades overall than graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and adjunct faculty. Instructors assigned significantly more D’s and F’s than tenure/track faculty, adjuncts, and GTAs. Chi-square analysis also revealed instructors and tenure/track faculty assign fewer A’s, but tenure/track faculty assign more B’s than the other faculty groups. …

A Kernel-Induced Space Selection Approach To Model Selection Of Klda, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Ping Xue, Luping Zhou Jan 2008

A Kernel-Induced Space Selection Approach To Model Selection Of Klda, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Ping Xue, Luping Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Model selection in kernel linear discriminant analysis (KLDA) refers to the selection of appropriate parameters of a kernel function and the regularizer. By following the principle of maximum information preservation, this paper formulates the model selection problem as a problem of selecting an optimal kernel-induced space in which different classes are maximally separated from each other. A scatter-matrix-based criterion is developed to measure the "goodness" of a kernel-induced space, and the kernel parameters are tuned by maximizing this criterion. This criterion is computationally efficient and is differentiable with respect to the kernel parameters. Compared with the leave-one-out (LOO) or -fold …

Orbifolds Are Not Commutative Geometries, Adam C. Rennie, Joseph C. Varilly

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this note we show that the crucial orientation condition for commutative geometries fails for the natural commutative spectral triple of an orbifold M/G.

A Low-Complexity Iterative Channel Estimation And Detection Technique For Doubly Selective Channels, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping Jan 2008

A Low-Complexity Iterative Channel Estimation And Detection Technique For Doubly Selective Channels, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity iterative joint channel estimation, detection and decoding technique for doubly selective channels. The key is a segment-by-segment frequency domain equalization (FDE) strategy under the assumption that channel is approximately static within a short segment. Guard gaps (for cyclic prefixing or zero padding) are not required between adjacent segments, which avoids the power and spectral overheads due to the use of cyclic prefix (CP) in the conventional FDE technique. A low-complexity bi-directional channel estimation algorithm is also developed to exploit correlation information of time-varying channels. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of …

Implementing Analytical Geometric And Penetration Response Correction For Keel-Edge Pinhole Spect Image Reconstruction, Xuezhu Zhang, Qiusheng Dai, Yujin Qi Jan 2008

Implementing Analytical Geometric And Penetration Response Correction For Keel-Edge Pinhole Spect Image Reconstruction, Xuezhu Zhang, Qiusheng Dai, Yujin Qi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The collimator response compensation is very important in high-resolution pinhole SPECT imaging for resolution recovery and quantitative imaging. In this study the pinhole collimator response of the keel-edge aperture was investigated in terms of the geometric response function and penetration response function (GPRF). An approximate numerical method was proposed to implement the geometric and penetration response correction (GPRC) for keel-edge pinhole SPECT image reconstruction. A lookup table for the GPRC was calculated and then was utilized in the 3D pinhole iterative OSEM reconstruction procedure. The performance of the image reconstruction with the GPRC was evaluated using both the phantom and …

Media, Multiculturalism And The Politics Of Listening, Tanja Dreher Jan 2008

Media, Multiculturalism And The Politics Of Listening, Tanja Dreher

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

To date both research and policy on media and cultural diversity have emphasised questions of speaking, whether in mainstream, community or diaspora media. There is also a vast literature examining questions of representation, including stereotyping, racialisation, hybridisation and self-representations. This paper extends these discussions to focus on questions of listening. Attention to listening provokes important questions about media and multiculturalism: How do media enable or constrain listening across difference? How can a diversity of voices be heard in the media? Drawing on recent work in ethics and political theory, this paper explores the productive possibilities of a shift from the …

Far From Common: Innovative Approaches To Designing Information Rich Learning And Research Spaces, Helen E. Mandl, Margie H. Jantti

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The University of Wollongong Library commenced the new academic year with a state of the art complex designed to attract and welcome students, staff and visitors to a new range of lightfilled study and social places. The Library in its current form, is a significant departure from the original three-storey building which was colloquially known as The Bunker. Built in the 1970’s it was typical of the brutalist architectural style. The reconstruction of the Library extension during 2007 enabled the deconstruction of traditional approaches to facilities design. Cognisant of the proliferation of group work within the curriculum and demand for …

Elastic Practice In Academic Developers, Anna L. Carew, Geraldine E. Lefoe, M. Bell, L. Armour Jan 2008

Elastic Practice In Academic Developers, Anna L. Carew, Geraldine E. Lefoe, M. Bell, L. Armour

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The academic developer’s role is the focus of a growing body of literature. This paper builds the literature by arguing the importance to our current practice of making our theoretical underpinnings explicit. We excise and describe fragments of practice from the work of individual academic developers in order to discuss and consider the relationship between particular theories of academic development and particular approaches that these theories support. The three fragments of academic development practice we detail are related to reflective practice, collegiality and the scholarship of teaching. We also provide a fourth, more fulsome description of an approach to illustrate …

This large-scale study into the recognition, enhancement and development of sessional teaching in higher education builds on the Australian Universities Teaching Committee Report (2003a) Training, Support and Management of Sessional Teaching Staff. The aim of the current Project was to identify and analyse current national practice and refocus attention on the issues surrounding sessional teachers in the university sector. The Project had three objectives: to establish the full extent of the contribution that sessional teachers make to teaching and learning in higher education; to identify and analyse good practice examples for dissemination; and to consider the possible developments for institutional …

Arctic And Outback--Indigenous Literature At The 'Ends Of The Earth.', K. L. Mcmahon-Coleman Jan 2008

Arctic And Outback--Indigenous Literature At The 'Ends Of The Earth.', K. L. Mcmahon-Coleman

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Canada and Australia share a colonial history which featured an attempt to eradicate Indigenous spirituality and language and which involved governmental intervention in areas such as health and education. The movement across traditional borders in order to access health and education created a kind of intra-national diasporic condition, which Indigenous peoples in these countries continue to negotiate on a daily basis.

The Inuit writer Alootook Ipellie and Murri writer Sam Watson seek to resist cultural constraints through creating works which are multiply transgressive. Their works cross genre boundaries and use the interstices between Indigenous diaspora, queer theory and maban reality …

Textual Engagement Of A Different Kind?, Meeta Chatterjee Jan 2008

Textual Engagement Of A Different Kind?, Meeta Chatterjee

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Plagiarism, a complex and contested issue related to engaging with texts, has deservedly received considerable research attention in recent times. However, there is more to integrating academic reading into writing than the issue of plagiarism. Through the voices of others, writers negotiate their position in their discourse community, align themselves to the epistemological value systems of discipline(s) and adopt appropriate stances. This has to be done in ways that are acceptable to the discipline and calls for appropriate engagement with previous studies and the reader. A fine balancing act is expected of a doctoral thesis: the right mix of humility …

In this part of the world they have another thing, they say taisez-vous, or shut up, or shut it, and they say it as they are talking, they are talking along about something and they say, oh shut it, and it is not to themselves, nor to you, it is of the facts of which they are speaking, sometimes they say taisez-vous, taisez-vous, and the sentence goes on, it is rather delightful, I do not quite know why, they may say and the war is long and the Germans might be coming this way again oh shut up oh shut …

She-Pwm Switching Strategies For Active Neutral Point Clamped Multilevel Converters, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Mohamed S. A Dahidah, Vassilios G. Agelidis Jan 2008

She-Pwm Switching Strategies For Active Neutral Point Clamped Multilevel Converters, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Mohamed S. A Dahidah, Vassilios G. Agelidis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The main drawback of the diode neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter is the unequal loss distribution among the semiconductor devices which confines the maximum output power and the switching frequency. To address this drawback, switching state redundancy is required to evenly distribute the losses and can be achieved differently as the level of the converter changes. For instance, the three-level active NPC (3L-ANPC) converter has switching state redundancy and is derived from the 3L-NPC converter by adding an anti-parallel switch to the clamping diodes; in the 4L-ANPC converter, the combination of a 2L converter and a 3L-ANPC converter is used; in a …

Fitting Finite Mixtures Of Linear Mixed Models With The Em Algorithm, Bettina Grun Jan 2008

Fitting Finite Mixtures Of Linear Mixed Models With The Em Algorithm, Bettina Grun

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Finite mixtures of linear mixed models are increasily applied in differentareas of application. They conveniently allow to account for correlations betweenobservations from the same individual and to model unobserved heterogeneity betweenindividuals at the same time. Different variants of the EM algorithm arepossible for maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. In this paper two different versionsfor fitting this model class are presented. One variant of the EM algorithmrequires weighted ML estimation. As this fitting method might not be readily availablein standard software sufficient conditions which allow to transform a weightedinto an unweighted ML estimation problem are derived.

Old Noise, New Sounds: Sonic Explorations In Gallery Spaces, Su Ballard Jan 2008

Old Noise, New Sounds: Sonic Explorations In Gallery Spaces, Su Ballard

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

Leon Narbey's electronic sound and light installation Real Time opened . New Plymouth's Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in February 1970. It was a noisy exhibition. Fluorescent and neon lights constructed flickering visual spaces, swathes of black polythene disguised all internal architecture, and recording microphones and movement triggers transferred sounds from one space to another. It was simultaneously disorientating and exhilarating. Real Time was a major installation in a minor location. Outside the centres of an already. peripheral country, Real Time raised the possibility of networked electronic installation transgressing the mainstreams of both "gallery art and media art." It did this by …

Introduction: The Aotearoa Digital Arts Reader, Stella Brennan, Su Ballard Jan 2008

Introduction: The Aotearoa Digital Arts Reader, Stella Brennan, Su Ballard

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

A sampler containing many voices and visions-histories, critiques and calls to arms- this book has developed out of a particular networked community. A network both evokes and elides. For as Danny Butt asks in his contribution to this book, "How do we think what is not connected?" Or, for that matter, how can we know what (or who)we do not know? Do we as editors have a responsibility to make definitions, despite our awareness that any definition is partisan? Have we not already done so? Can we describe what is digital, what it means to make art on, influenced by, …

The Restless Cosmopolitan, Ian A. Mclean Jan 2008

The Restless Cosmopolitan, Ian A. Mclean

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

Gordon Bennett always tells a good story, and a major attraction of his work is its narrative structure. Not any more. His recent abstract paintings forsake the discursive qualities upon which he built a very successful career. Bennett has a history of abandoning successful modes for new ones, but nothing in his oeuvre matches the audaciousness of this turn. Be it radical, risky or simply foolish, what other artist in his position would (or could) make such a wild move?

Berkovich Indentation Of Diamondlike Carbon Coatings On Silicon Substrates, Ayesha J. Haq, Paul Munroe, Mark Hoffman, Phil Martin, Avi Bendavid Jan 2008

Berkovich Indentation Of Diamondlike Carbon Coatings On Silicon Substrates, Ayesha J. Haq, Paul Munroe, Mark Hoffman, Phil Martin, Avi Bendavid

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The deformation behavior of diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings on silicon substrates induced by Berkovich indentation has been investigated. DLC coatings deposited by a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique were subjected to nanoindentation with a Berkovich indenter over a range of maximum loads from 100 to 300 mN. Distinct pop-ins were observed for loads greater than 150 mN. However, no pop-out was observed for the loads studied. The top surface of the indents showed annular cracks with associated fragmented material. The cross sections showed up to 20% localized reduction in thickness of the DLC coating beneath the indenter tip. Cracking, {111} …

The Evolution In Coal Mine Gas Extraction - A Response To Economic, Environmental And Community Pressures, Dennis John Black, Naj Aziz Jan 2008

The Evolution In Coal Mine Gas Extraction - A Response To Economic, Environmental And Community Pressures, Dennis John Black, Naj Aziz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Effective gas management is vital to the success of the longwall mines operating in the Bulli seam, located in the Southern Sydney Basin, Australia. High gas emissions are characteristic of the region with specific gas emissions typically in the order of 30-45 m3/t. The mines that operate in this area have, since 1980, relied on the use of extensive underground to inseam (UIS) drilling to drain gas both ahead of advancing roadway development and following longwall coal extraction. With the ever increasing production capacity of modern mining machinery the UIS methods are struggling to drain sufficient gas from the coal …

Linking Attitudes And Demographics In A Tourist Segmentation Model - A Two-Stage Approach, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller Jan 2008

Linking Attitudes And Demographics In A Tourist Segmentation Model - A Two-Stage Approach, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Segmentation has been widely studied in tourism research e.g. Dolnicar (2004). Dawley (2006) points that commonly used segmentation variables such as demographics lead to identifiable segments which are not actionable while other useful approaches e.g. psychographics, are actionable but not identifiable. The objective of this paper is to develop a two-stage linkage approach to segmentation whereby cluster analysis using psychographic variables is conducted within demographic group. Demographic groups are selected based on propensity to travel. This research utilizes data generated from a cross-sectional self-completed survey of 49,105 Australian respondents on travel and tourism. The managerial usefulness of this segmentation is …

What Motivates Consumers To Write Online Travel Reviews?, Kyung Hyan Yoo, Ulrike Gretzel Jan 2008

What Motivates Consumers To Write Online Travel Reviews?, Kyung Hyan Yoo, Ulrike Gretzel

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The Web provides a fertile ground for word-of-mouth communication and more and more consumers write about and share product-related experiences online. Given the experiential nature of tourism, such first-hand knowledge communicated by other travelers is especially useful for travel decision making. However, very little is known about what motivates consumers to write online travel reviews. A Web-based survey using an online consumer panel was conducted to investigate consumers' motivations to write online travel reviews. Measurement scales to gauge the motivations to contribute online travel reviews were developed and tested. The results indicate that online travel review writers are mostly motivated …

From Hatred To Genuine Peace: A Dynamic Formulation Of Conflict Resolution, Amnon Levy Jan 2008

From Hatred To Genuine Peace: A Dynamic Formulation Of Conflict Resolution, Amnon Levy

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper highlights the role of hatred and its evolution in determining the nature of peace between groups, or nations, after reaching, and while implementing, truce. It proposes that weak inertia, diminishing memory of hatred and low propensity to reciprocate hatred are essential for reaching a genuine and stable peace. In the case of mutual abstinence from violence, genuine peace process prevails if both groups have sufficiently weak inertia and strongly diminishing memories of hatred and low proponsities to reciprocate hatred. When these conditions are not satisfied, genuine peace may still be reached if one of the groups has weak …
