The Use Of Psychological State Words By Late Talkers At Ages 3, 4 And 5 Years, Eliza Carlson Lee, Leslie Rescorla
The Use Of Psychological State Words By Late Talkers At Ages 3, 4 And 5 Years, Eliza Carlson Lee, Leslie Rescorla
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The use of four types of psychological state words (physiological, emotional, desire, and cognitive) during mother-child play sessions at ages 3, 4, and 5 years was examined in 30 children diagnosed with delayed expressive language at 24-31 months and 15 age-matched comparison children with typical development. The children's mean length of utterance, total words uttered, lexical diversity, and use of propositional complements were assessed. The late talkers used significantly more physiological state words at ages 3 and 4, but the two groups did not differ in their use of physiological state terms at age 5. The late talkers used significantly …
Prospective Associations From Family-Of-Origin Interactions To Adult Marital Interactions And Relationship Adjustment, Sarah W. Whitton, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz, Joseph P. Allen, Judith A. Crowell, Stuart T. Hauser
Prospective Associations From Family-Of-Origin Interactions To Adult Marital Interactions And Relationship Adjustment, Sarah W. Whitton, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz, Joseph P. Allen, Judith A. Crowell, Stuart T. Hauser
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
To test the social learning-based hypothesis that marital conflict resolution patterns are learned in the family-of-origin, we used longitudinal, observational data to assess prospective associations between family conflict interaction patterns during adolescence and offspring’s later marital conflict interaction patterns. Forty-seven participants completed an observed family conflict resolution task with their parents at age 14. Seventeen years later, they completed an observed marital conflict interaction task with their spouse, as well as a measure of marital adjustment. As predicted, levels of hostility and positive engagement expressed by parents and adolescents during family interactions were prospectively linked with levels of hostility and …

The Invisible Pregnant Athlete And The Promise Of Title Ix, Deborah Brake
The Invisible Pregnant Athlete And The Promise Of Title Ix, Deborah Brake
Articles
The question of how law should respond to women who become pregnant, and whether to specially accommodate pregnancy or analogize it to other conditions, features prominently in virtually every area of sex equality law. In debates over women's equality in the workplace, for example, it has been the defining issue for the development of and debate over various models of equality in feminist legal theory. Until recently, however, the issue has been all but absent in debates and discussion about Title IX and its promise of sex equality in sports. This changed suddenly in 2007, when ESPN televised a program …
Milk Teeth And Jet Planes: Kin Relations In Families Of Sri Lanka’S Transnational Domestic Servants, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Milk Teeth And Jet Planes: Kin Relations In Families Of Sri Lanka’S Transnational Domestic Servants, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay examines the confluence of local and global dynamics, exploring how transnational migration affects and is affected by gender roles, kinship relations, intergenerational obligations, and ideologies of parenthood. Journeying to the Middle East repeated on two-year labor contracts, many of Sri Lanka’s migrant housemaids leave behind their husbands and children. Women’s long-term absences reorganize and disrupt widely accepted gendered attributions of parenting roles, with fathers and female relatives taking over household tasks. Migrants say that economic difficulties prompt migration, and assess commitment to kin in financial terms. The government also benefits from remittances. Nevertheless, stakeholders (villagers, politicians, and the …
Rape Myth Acceptance, Hypermasculinity, And Demographic Characteristics As Correlates Of Moral Development: Understanding Sexually Aggressive Attitudes In First Year College Men, Jerry Lee Tatum
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Male perpetrated sexual aggression has long been recognized as a serious problem on college campuses. The purpose of this Multiple Regression Correlation research design study was to assess the relationship between levels of moral development (measured by the Defining Issues Test) and the degree to which first year college men (N = 161) ascribed to rape supportive attitudes. Rape supportive attitudes, for the purposes of this study, included assessed levels of rape myth endorsements (measured by the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale [IRMA]) and hypermasculinity (measured by the Hypermasculinity Inventory). Respondents completed three research instruments and a demographic questionnaire prior …
An Empirical Investigation Into Appellate Structure And The Perceived Quality Of Appellate Review, Rafael I. Pardo, Jonathan Remy Nash
An Empirical Investigation Into Appellate Structure And The Perceived Quality Of Appellate Review, Rafael I. Pardo, Jonathan Remy Nash
Scholarship@WashULaw
Commentators have theorized that several factors may improve the process, and thus perhaps the accuracy, of appellate review: (1) review by a panel of judges, (2) subject-matter expertise in the area of the appeal, (3) other law-finding ability, (4) adherence to traditional notions of appellate hierarchy, and (5) the judicial independence of appellate judges. The considerable discussion that has expounded upon these theories has occurred in a vacuum of abstract generalization. This Paper adds a new dimension by presenting results from an empirical study of bankruptcy appellate opinions issued over a three-year period. The federal bankruptcy appellate structure provides certain …
The Utility Of Opacity In Judicial Selection, Rafael I. Pardo
The Utility Of Opacity In Judicial Selection, Rafael I. Pardo
Scholarship@WashULaw
Does too much transparency in the selection of judges undermine the independence of the judiciary? This Essay seeks to provide insight into answering this question by focusing on the opaque process by which federal bankruptcy judges are selected. Part I begins with an account that anchors the concepts of judicial independence and judicial accountability to the concept of judicial quality. It proceeds to situate within this account the selection process, suggesting that the process can function as a form of judicial accountability, albeit one that diminishes judicial quality in those instances where the process becomes politicized. A brief discussion follows …
The Paradox Of Financial Services Regulation: Preserving Client Expectations Of Loyalty In An Industry Rife With Conflicts Of Interest, Andrew F. Tuch
The Paradox Of Financial Services Regulation: Preserving Client Expectations Of Loyalty In An Industry Rife With Conflicts Of Interest, Andrew F. Tuch
Scholarship@WashULaw
This paper considers the implications of Australian Securities and Investments Commission v. Citigroup [2007] FCA 963, a landmark decision of the Federal Court of Australia. The case highlights an apparent paradox in financial services regulation: at the same time as allowing, or even fostering, the development of financial services conglomerates, regulation in multiple jurisdictions preserves potentially incompatible general law obligations that arise from client expectations of loyalty. The paradox is most evident in the context of the modern investment bank.
The paper discusses the dynamic nature of investment banks, their organizational structure, the types of conflicts they typically face and …

Evaluating The Concurrent Validity Of Three Web-Based Iq Tests And The Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (Rias), Michael W. Firmin, Chi-En Hwang, Amanda J. Burger, Jessica Sammons, Ruth E. Lowrie
Psychology Faculty Publications
In a double-blind study, 60 General Psychology students, selected in low, average, and high ACT ranges, were administered the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS). On a separate occasion, the students also completed web-based internet IQ tests from tickle.com, queendom.com, and iqtest.com. MANOVA results showed that ACT level had a significant effect on all four IQ scores combined (Wilk’s Lambda = .451, p

Utilizing Undergraduate Assistants In General Education Courses, Michael W. Firmin
Psychology Faculty Publications
This conceptual article relates a best-practice paradigm for undergraduate faculty who teach relatively large, undergraduate, general education courses and utilize an undergraduate teaching assistant (TA). Suggested characteristics for successful TAs are related as well as intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that help recruit quality assistants. Five factors are shared that are believed to have made an undergraduate TA program successful for 20 years: the quality of students recruited, helping students to handle well their peer-relationships with students in the class, learning which items can and cannot successfully be delegated to TAs, harnessing the potency of relationships, and maintaining a healthy benefit/cost …
