Japan's Missile Defense, Norifumi Namatame Jan 2008

Japan's Missile Defense, Norifumi Namatame

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For some years, Japan has pursued its own missile defense system in cooperation with the United States. The Japanese government claims that the missile defense (JMD) program is purely defensive and will not pose a threat to other countries. JMD may seem justified by North Korea's development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. However, neighboring states regarded it as a sign of military ambition and revival of Japan's prewar militarism. The development and deployment of JMD could have grave implications for regional and global security. This dissertation focuses on these implications, domestic and international political considerations and the future direction …

Energy In A Resource-Based Regional Economy: A Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis, Hodjat Ghadimi Jan 2008

Energy In A Resource-Based Regional Economy: A Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis, Hodjat Ghadimi

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

States and even local governments are increasingly realizing the need for long-term sustainable energy-environment planning as an integral part of their economic development program. These sub-national units are progressively playing a more active role in advancing policies for the reliability, environmental sustainability, and exploring the economic development impact of their energy resources and supplies. This article outlines a modeling framework for an integrated analysis of the energy-environment-economy system in an energy resource-based region within a developed economy. The theoretical structure and mathematical skeletal of this dynamic optimal depletion computable general equilibrium model as the core of this modeling framework is …

These issues of Bohemia, a magazine published in Havana, Cuba, cover the years 1998 through 2001. A native of West Tampa born December 1903, Rodriguez lived her entire life in West Tampa and Hillsborough County. She passed away at the age of 101 on 11 September 2005. In the late 1990s, she began a dialogue with residents of her ancestral homeland, Cuba. In time, some Cubans began mailing her copies of Bohemia that often included hand-written notes or letters about their lives. Some people also wrote on the covers and inside of the magazines. Generally, this correspondence focused on activities …

Who Are Latino/A Prospective Teachers And What Do They Bring To U.S. Schools?, Mary L. Gomez, Terri L. Rodriguez, Vonzell Agosto

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications

In this article, the authors draw on life-history methods to investigate the family, school, university, and teacher education experiences of three Latino teacher candidates in a large, midwestern, research-oriented university in the United States. They show how in university social experiences and in teacher education classes and field experiences, these young men often felt misinterpreted in interactions with white females in particular. Also evident is their strong desire to make personal connections with youth and families they teach. The authors offer suggestions for how teacher educators can be more responsive to prospective male elementary teachers and teacher candidates of color.

Evaluating Group Use Of The Information Commons, Michael J. Whitchurch Jan 2008

Evaluating Group Use Of The Information Commons, Michael J. Whitchurch

Faculty Publications

Evaluating the effectiveness of an information commons has been discussed in many venues since the concept was first implemented. The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University confronted this same struggle. After two years of activity, the information commons had not been assessed to see whether the purposes for which it was planned were being fulfilled. This paper describes its first assessment. Measuring the number of groups who used the information commons over the period of two years, the assessment showed that indeed the commons is being used to a great extent for group work, one of the goals …

The Effect Of One-Session Exposure Treatment On Selective Processing And Explicit Memory Bias In Snake- And Spider-Fearful Participants, Karen L. Stanley-Kime Jan 2008

The Effect Of One-Session Exposure Treatment On Selective Processing And Explicit Memory Bias In Snake- And Spider-Fearful Participants, Karen L. Stanley-Kime

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Unlike the empirically supported phenomenon of anxiety-induced selective processing bias, research on congruent explicit memory bias is inconclusive; indeed, there is evidence for recall decrements of threat-relevant information. There is also a paucity of literature examining the effects of treatment on these cognitive biases. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exposure treatment on selective processing and explicit memory bias in snake- and spider-fearful participants by measuring implicit and explicit memory for central and peripheral environmental details. Recall for environmental details in a fearful group that received treatment was compared to a fearful group that …

Impact Of Sexual Dysfunction On Quality Of Life Among Anxiety Disorder Patients, Courtney E. Fons Jan 2008

Impact Of Sexual Dysfunction On Quality Of Life Among Anxiety Disorder Patients, Courtney E. Fons

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Current research suggests that anxiety disorders may be associated with sexual dysfunction. This increased risk may carry important implications given the detrimental effect sexual dysfunction has been shown to have on quality of life in a variety of populations. However, no studies have examined the impact of sexual dysfunction on quality of life among anxiety disorder patients. Thus, in this study, participants were asked to complete questionnaires measuring quality of life, sexual functioning, and mental health. The data were used to compare quality of life between patients reporting sexual dysfunction and those reporting normal sexual functioning. Additionally, data were analyzed …
