The Dirty War Index: A Public Health And Human Rights Tool For Examining And Monitoring Armed Conflict Outcomes., M Hicks, M Spagat

Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks

War, a major public health problem, is a situation where the interests of public health, human rights, and humanitarian law intersect.

The DWI is a data-driven public health tool that identifies rates of particularly undesirable or prohibited, i.e., “dirty,” outcomes inflicted on populations during war (e.g., civilian death, child injury, or torture).

A DWI is calculated as: (Number of “dirty,” i.e., undesirable or prohibited cases/Total number of cases) × 100.

DWIs are designed for direct, easy translation of war's public health outcomes into the human rights, policy, and interdisciplinary work needed to address war's practice.

DWIs support monitoring, deterrence, and …

Determinants Of Malnutrition In Senegal: Individual, Household, Community Variables, And Their Interaction, Sebastian Linnemayr, Harold Alderman, Abdoulaye Ka Dec 2007

Determinants Of Malnutrition In Senegal: Individual, Household, Community Variables, And Their Interaction, Sebastian Linnemayr, Harold Alderman, Abdoulaye Ka

Sebastian Linnemayr

The relationship between poverty and nutrition is a two-sided one: on the one hand, economic growth (which is generally associated with an eradication of poverty) leads to reduced malnutrition. On the other hand, nutrition is one of the key ingredients for human capital formation, which in turn represents one of the fundamental factors of growth. There are numerous studies that show the correlates of malnutrition using both household- and community-level variables. However, few of these studies allow for the potential endogeneity of community infrastructure or indicate their interplay with characteristics of the mother. The current study considers the socio-economic determinants …

The Lesser Of Two Evils? A Qualitative Study Of Offenders' Preferences For Prison Compared To Alternatives, David May, Alisha Williams, Peter Wood Dec 2007

The Lesser Of Two Evils? A Qualitative Study Of Offenders' Preferences For Prison Compared To Alternatives, David May, Alisha Williams, Peter Wood

David May

Recent work has demonstrated that many offenders will choose to serve prison rather than any amount of a community-based sanction. This primarily quantitative research has found that offender-generated exchange rates are influenced by a wide variety of experiences and characteristics. Missing from this literature is a qualitative evaluation of why offenders might make this choice. We present qualitative data from 618 probationers and parolees to explain why those who have experienced imprisonment are less willing to serve community sanctions than their counterparts, and more willing to serve prison. Results hold implications for deterrence, recidivism, rehabilitation, and correctional policy issues.

Web Citation Availability: A Follow-Up Study, Mary Casserly, James Bird

James E Bird

The authors report on a study to examine the persistence of Web-based content. In 2002, a sample of five hundred citations to Internet resources from articles published in library and information science journals in 1999 and 2000 were analyzed by citation characteristics and searched to determine cited content persistence, availability on the Web, and availability in the Internet Archive. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify citation characteristics associated with availability. The sample URLs were searched again between August 2005 and June 2006 to determine persistence, availability on the Web, and in the Internet Archive. As in the original study, the …

Effects Of Informal Interactions On Collaborative Research Between University And Industry Scientists, Branco Ponomariov, Craig Boardman Dec 2007

Effects Of Informal Interactions On Collaborative Research Between University And Industry Scientists, Branco Ponomariov, Craig Boardman

Craig Boardman

We ask whether informal interactions between university and industry scientists result in collaborative research. Using data from a national survey of tenured and tenure-track scientists and engineers in U.S. research extensive universities, we demonstrate that university scientists’ informal interactions with private sector companies increase both the likelihood and intensity of collaborative research with industry.

Beating The Odds With The Insider’S Scoop: Tips And Tricks From The Library Secrets! Librarian, Jennifer Kelley

Jennifer Kelley

Is the research process an “unbeatable” game, where the odds are always against the student? We see our students sitting blankly in front of computer screens, dropping search terms into databases like coins into one-armed bandits, hoping for the jackpot—full-text articles on their subject seemingly elusive as three cherries in a row.

Games generally have a learning curve—the more you play, the better you become. Increasingly, however, gamers turn to tips and tricks resources for shortcuts, strategies and cheat codes that can give them the edge and propel them to the next level. When it comes to research, the stakes …

Chronicles Of A Failure: From A Renegotiation Clause To Arbitration Of Transnational Contracts, Luigi Russi Dec 2007

Chronicles Of A Failure: From A Renegotiation Clause To Arbitration Of Transnational Contracts, Luigi Russi

Luigi Russi

The present paper recounts the various steps which parties to a transnational contract containing a renegotiation clause may need to go through, should the circumstances accounted for in the renegotiation clause come to existence. To this end, the article sets off from an outline of the most relevant structural features and functions of renegotiation clauses, and of the typical obligations which may derive therefrom.

Secondly, the paper’s focus narrows down to the – by no means infrequent – case of failure to renegotiate in presence of an arbitration clause governing the parties’ agreement. In the latter case, in particular, several …

Posting For Points: Edublogs In The Jmc Curriculum, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

Despite the spread of blogs in mass media and in academia, little scholarly work has explored their use within the journalism and mass communication curriculum. This study, based on incorporation of blogs in ten classes during five semesters -- undergraduate and graduate, skills and conceptual -- examines student use of the format in relation to theories of social and blended learning. Findings suggest that although students tend to approach blogging as yet another assignment, blogs facilitate their engagement with course material and one another. Blogging has become an integral job component for growing numbers of journalists and other mass communication …

Beyond The Stars: Scientists Working In University Biotechnology Centers, Craig Boardman Dec 2007

Beyond The Stars: Scientists Working In University Biotechnology Centers, Craig Boardman

Craig Boardman

Most study of university–industry interactions in biotechnology emphasizes the productivity (e.g., patents, spin-off firms) of a relative few number of “star” university scientists. This study uses a national survey of university scientists to assess the industry involvement of university scientists who affiliate with university research centers focused on biotechnology. The results demonstrate such affiliation to correlate positively with informal interactions with industry, such as knowledge exchange, but not with reports of the production of economic and bibliometric outputs. Implications for policy and centers programs are discussed.

The Mahout On The Elephant: How The Knowledge Management Practices Of The Wellington Campus Library Enriches Cput Libraries, Michiel Moll, Lynn Kleinveldt

Michiel E Moll

The importance of knowledge management in institutions is widely acknowledged. However, the influence of progressive knowledge management practices in one branch of the organization on the organization as a whole is the theme of this paper. The MJL Olivier Library (Wellington campus library) of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is one of nine branches, with Cape Town and Bellville being the largest. However the knowledge management practices of Wellington with particular reference to knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and knowledge capturing leads to Wellington being seen as an “innovation champion” (Glynn, 1996) within the CPUT Academic Information Services (AIS). …

Effectiveness Of A Community-Based Intervention To Improve Nutrition In Young Children In Senegal: A Difference In Difference Analysis, Harold Alderman, Biram Ndiaye, Sebastian Linnemayr, Abdoulaye Ka, Claudia Rokx, Khadidiatou Dieng, Menno Mulder-Sibanda Dec 2007

Effectiveness Of A Community-Based Intervention To Improve Nutrition In Young Children In Senegal: A Difference In Difference Analysis, Harold Alderman, Biram Ndiaye, Sebastian Linnemayr, Abdoulaye Ka, Claudia Rokx, Khadidiatou Dieng, Menno Mulder-Sibanda

Sebastian Linnemayr

There are few studies of community growth promotion as a means of addressing malnutrition that are based on longitudinal analysis of large-scale programmes with adequate controls to construct a counterfactual. The current study uses a difference in difference comparison of cohorts to assess the impact on the proportion of underweight children who lived in villages receiving services provided by the Senegal Nutrition Enhancement Project between 2004 and 2006. The project, designed to extend nutrition and growth promotion intervention into rural areas through non-governmental organisation service providers, significantly lowered the risk of a child having a weight more than 2 sd …

Social Psychological Aspects Of Communication And Aging, Marie Savundranayagam, E. Ryan Dec 2007

Social Psychological Aspects Of Communication And Aging, Marie Savundranayagam, E. Ryan

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Language plays an important role in defining identities in older adulthood. Both self-perception and others' perceptions of older adults are reflected through language used by older and younger adults (see recent texts: de Bot & Makoni, 2005; Harwood, 2007; Hummert & Nussbaum, 2001; Nussbaum & Coupland, 2004). In this review, we outline key theoretical perspectives on the study of communication with older adults and provide evidence supporting these perspectives within the context of age stereotypes, intergenerational communication, cross-cultural communication, and health care encounters. Given that communication is an interactive process, we discuss how older adults use language and communication to …

Modes, Weighted Modes, And Calibrated Modes: Evidence Of Clustering Using Modality Tests, Daniel Henderson, Christopher Parmeter, R. Russell Dec 2007

Modes, Weighted Modes, And Calibrated Modes: Evidence Of Clustering Using Modality Tests, Daniel Henderson, Christopher Parmeter, R. Russell

Christopher F. Parmeter

We apply recent results from the statistics literature to test for multimodality of worldwide distributions of several (unweighted and population-weighted) measures of labor productivity. Specifically, we employ Silverman (Bump) and Dip modality tests, calibrated to correct for their incorrect asymptotic levels. We show that test results are sensitive to the test statistic employed and to population weighting. But regardless of the statistical criterion used, multimodality is present throughout, or emerges during, our sample period (1960–2000). We also examine (a) movements of economies between modal clusters and (b) relationships between certain key development factors and multimodality of the productivity distribution.
