Competition & Turnout: The Majority Run-Off As A Natural Experiment, Indridi Indridason
Indridi H Indridason
Run-off elections offer certain advantages for the study of political behavior over other electoral systems. This paper exploits the fact that run-off elections resemble a natural experiment to study the effects of competitiveness on voter turnout. The literature offers several explanations of the determinants of voter turnout. In run-off elections most of these factors can be assumed to be constant between the two ballots. Run-off elections, thus, provide an opportunity to evaluate the insights offered by rational choice theories of voter turnout. The results of the first ballot inform voters about the competitiveness of the race, which influences their propensity …

Framing A Vision For 21st-Century Librarianship: Lis Education In Changing Times, James Elmborg
Framing A Vision For 21st-Century Librarianship: Lis Education In Changing Times, James Elmborg
James K. Elmborg
Librarianship is at a critical juncture. Technological changes have reshaped the information landscape, but libraries as social institutions have not been able to transform themselves to keep pace. This is the challenge of Library and Information Science Education. As we look to a future professional education for librarians, we need to acknowledge the need to reinvent our educational goals and methods so our graduates can lead in this new emerging environment. A relevant education for the information sectors will include a synthesis of global, technical, and critical perspectives to encourage librarians to understand the changes they need to enact to …

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Using Clickers To Enhance Learning In The Library, Janelle Wertzberger
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Using Clickers To Enhance Learning In The Library, Janelle Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
Musselman Library’s Reference & Instruction Department has an active and growing information literacy (IL) program based on faculty-librarian collaboration rather than institutional curriculum. While a few information literacy session sequences are taught within a specific course, the vast majority of instructional sessions are traditional “one-shots.”
Because formal instruction time with students is limited, instruction librarians take care to include active learning and other participatory pedagogies to improve learning and increase the likelihood that students will return to the library, the reference desk, and the library website. Incorporating personal response devices, or “clickers,” into IL sessions is another technique for engaging …

This is a derivative version of 'Can Good Faith Performance Be Unfair? An Economic Framework for Understanding the Problem', which appeared in the Whittier Law Review, vol. 29, 2008. In comparison to the version therein published, I have eliminated the mathematical appendix, and attempted to outline my reasoning exclusively in words, for it to be accessible to a wider readership.

Civil Liberties And The Regulation Of Public Space: The Case Of Sidewalks In Las Vegas, Evelyn Blumenburg, Renia Ehrenfeucht
Civil Liberties And The Regulation Of Public Space: The Case Of Sidewalks In Las Vegas, Evelyn Blumenburg, Renia Ehrenfeucht
Renia Ehrenfeucht
Conflicts over the nature of and rights associated with public space have a long history and have prompted numerous regulatory responses. Perhaps nowhere in the USA has the regulation of public space been as far-reaching as in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the financial stakes associated with sidewalks are enormous. This study examines how local officials mediate among varied and competing uses of the sidewalk. In defining the function of the sidewalks narrowly, and passively deferring questions of civil liberties, local officials have effectively controlled almost all aspects of public behavior. In recent years, cities have invested in major commercial revitalization …
When To Run And When To Hide: Electoral Coordination And Exit, Indridi Indridason
When To Run And When To Hide: Electoral Coordination And Exit, Indridi Indridason
Indridi H Indridason
Elections represent a coordination problem for voters and candidates for office. Electoral coordination is also the causal mechanism behind any explanation of the relationship between electoral systems and the number of parties. I present a dynamic model of electoral coordination with candidate exit. The model extends two important results from the literature to a dynamic setting. The extension of Duverger's Law and the median-voter theorem also offers a simultaneous prediction of the number of parties and their ideological positions. Coordination failure is shown to be possible in a mixed-strategy equilibrium.
