Small Scale Entry Vs. Acquisitions Of Small Firms: Is Concentration Self-Reinforcing?, Zava Aydemir, Armin Schmutzler Dec 2007

Small Scale Entry Vs. Acquisitions Of Small Firms: Is Concentration Self-Reinforcing?, Zava Aydemir, Armin Schmutzler

Armin Schmutzler

We consider a reduced form model with acquisitions and entry. There are two investors and several small non-investing firms. One investor can acquire a small firm, the other investor decides about market entry. After that all firms play an oligopoly game. We derive conditions under which increasing market concentration arises with myopic firms. We apply the framework to a Cournot model with cost synergies and a Bertrand model where acquisitions extend the product spectrum of a firm.

The Centennial Of The Boundary Waters Treaty: A Century Of United States–Canadian Transboundary Water Management, Noah D. Hall

Noah D Hall

The Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 has now provided the foundation for transboundary United States-Canadian water management for a century. During the one hundred years that the Boundary Waters Treaty has been in place, both the law and the world in which the law operates have changed dramatically. Some of the most relevant and significant changes have been several fold increases in population and thousand fold increases in gross domestic product in North America with correlating increased environmental impacts, the growth of international law and governance institutions, the emergence of modern environmentalism and the resulting creation of domestic and international …

Diversity In Innovation And Productivity In Europe, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi Dec 2007

Diversity In Innovation And Productivity In Europe, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi

Mario Pianta

The diversity in innovation patterns across manufacturing and service industries and in their outcomes in terms of hourly labor productivity are investigated in this article considering six European countries. The Schumpeterian insights into the variety of innovation are developed in this work by identifying different innovation–performance relationships for industries and countries, relying either on the dominant role of product innovation, or on the diffusion of process improvements. Moreover, the “push” effect of innovation is combined with the “pull” effect of demand, by considering the impact of the dynamics of consumption and investment at the sectoral level. The results point out …

Histéresis Y Desempleo: El Caso De Francia Y Ee.Uu., Javier Agudo Dec 2007

Histéresis Y Desempleo: El Caso De Francia Y Ee.Uu., Javier Agudo

Javier Agudo

The Crucial Role Of Civil Society In Disaster Recovery And Japan’S Preparedness For Emergencies, Daniel P. Aldrich Dec 2007

The Crucial Role Of Civil Society In Disaster Recovery And Japan’S Preparedness For Emergencies, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

This article is concerned with the empirical puzzle of why certain neighborhoods and localities recover more quickly than others following disasters. It illuminates four mainstream theories of rehabilitation and resilience, and then investigates a neglected factor, namely the role of social networks and civil society. Initial analyses underscore the important role of trust and connectivity among local residents in the process of rebuilding. After examining the role of civil society in Japan’s preparedness for emergencies, the article concludes with some policy recommendations for governments and nongovernmental actors involved in disaster relief.

The Economics Of Place-Making Policies, Joshua D. Gottlieb, Edward L. Glaeser Dec 2007

The Economics Of Place-Making Policies, Joshua D. Gottlieb, Edward L. Glaeser

Joshua D. Gottlieb

Should the national government undertake policies aimed at strengthening the economies of particular localities or regions? Agglomeration economies and human capital spillovers suggest that such policies could enhance welfare. However, the mere existence of agglomeration externalities does not indicate which places should be subsidized. Without a better understanding of nonlinearities in these externalities, any government spatial policy is as likely to reduce as to increase welfare. Transportation spending has historically done much to make or break particular places, but current transportation spending subsidizes low-income, low-density places where agglomeration effects are likely to be weakest. Most large-scale place-oriented policies have had …

Television Violence Prevention Versus Juvenile Violence Prevention, Sharlette A. Kellum Ph.D. Dec 2007

Television Violence Prevention Versus Juvenile Violence Prevention, Sharlette A. Kellum Ph.D.

Dr. Sharlette A. Kellum-Gilbert

Animated features, like children's cartoons, are considered by some to be the most violent shows on television, with approximately 25 to 50 acts of violence per hour (Dietz and Strasburger, 1991). Cartoons, unlike other shows that portray violence, present instances of violence to children in an "acceptable" way, which teaches children from zero to 17 years of age that hurting people is tolerable. Television violence has been linked to juvenile aggression, which has been linked to juvenile violence. In researching several studies, the author found that many of the preventions mentioned in the television violence studies were also mentioned in …

Re-Thinking The Future Of Work: Beyond Binary Hierarchies, Colin C. Williams Dec 2007

Re-Thinking The Future Of Work: Beyond Binary Hierarchies, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

How will work be organised in the future? This paper reveals that although there are multiple stories about the future of work, a similar storyline is adopted across many of the competing visions. Most visions firstly squeeze all forms of work into one side or the other or some dichotomy and then proceed to temporally and/or normatively sequence the two sides of the dualism and finally label the resultant one-dimensional and linear trajectory as some -ism, -ation or post-somethingor-other. This paper evaluates critically such hierarchical binary narratives (e.g., the shift from informal to formal work, non-commodified to commodified work, localisation …
