Luxury Markets, Antitrust, And Intellectual Property: An Introduction, Ben Kleinman-Green Oct 2008

Luxury Markets, Antitrust, And Intellectual Property: An Introduction, Ben Kleinman-Green

Ben Kleinman-Green

In this paper I look at markets for luxury goods and begin exploring the interplay among trademark law, antitrust law, luxury goods, and copies of luxuries. In the absence of empirical data and economic theories directly on point, I informally extend a model of luxury markets to account for copies of luxury goods and then look to trademark law cases for indications of how courts might evaluate luxury markets in an antitrust context.

Ciudad Afuera, Mercado Al Centro, Vivienda Adentro, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq., Oscar R. Ospina Pol.

Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa

Mass Producing The Personal: The Greeting Card Industry’S Approach To Commercial Sentiment, Emily West Oct 2008

Mass Producing The Personal: The Greeting Card Industry’S Approach To Commercial Sentiment, Emily West

Emily E. West

The greeting card industry manages the challenge of mass-producing images and texts for use in interpersonal communication through both specific production techniques and narratives that “make sense” of this seemingly paradoxical task. The mass production of the personal is negotiated in the processes of writing sentiments and creating designs, as well as in identifying sending situations for cards. At Hallmark, the approach to creating emotional, relational communication for anonymous others is captured by the phrase “universal specificity,” which suggests that people’s emotions are essentially universal, and that the industry can meet the nation’s social expression needs by customizing these core …

Wildfires, Communities, And Agencies: Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Postfire Forest Restoration And Rehabilitation, Elisabeth M. Hamin, Robert L. Ryan Oct 2008

Wildfires, Communities, And Agencies: Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Postfire Forest Restoration And Rehabilitation, Elisabeth M. Hamin, Robert L. Ryan

Elisabeth M. Hamin

After wildfire, land managers are often called on to undertake complex restoration activities while also managing relations with wildfire-devastated communities. This research investigates the community–US Forest Service agency relations in the postwildfire period in three western US communities. In each community, we interviewed key informant representatives from government, business, environmental organizations, and recreation groups and conducted focus groups to gather input from residents located near burn areas. The goal was to understand how forest restoration and rehabilitation efforts and agency outreach were perceived by stakeholders who were recently affected by wildfire and how these perceptions were related to underlying community …

Klipsun Magazine, 2008, Volume 38, Issue 07 - October, Ciara O'Rourke

Klipsun Magazine

We’ll be the first to admit our cover’s a little sensational. It might even smell desperate. But when we said we were planning a historical issue, we received what you might call scorn. The nerve.

Fortunately, murder, prostitution and war aren’t just heavy-handed buzzwords we chose so you would pick up the magazine (although that’s true, too)—they fit the bill.

Thirty years ago this January, the notorious Hillside Strangler killed two Western students in a series of murders tracing back to California. Circa the early 1900s, sweet Fairhaven boasted the best brothels in town (the Horseshoe did, too, but …

Klipsun Magazine, 2008, Volume 39, Issue 01 - Fall, Megan Claflin

Klipsun Magazine

On Nov. 4, as the Klipsun staff worked diligently to publish this issue, our attentions were diverted. We witnessed history unfold as Americans voted in their first African-American president.

Despite our personal opinions or the boxes we marked on our ballots, the Klipsun newsroom watched as many parts of the country were seized by an uprising of emotion, passion and action. More than ever before, young Americans, our generation, made their voices heard. We rocked the vote!

For America, I believe this election was like coming up for fresh air.

During the past eight years our patriotism has been tested. …

Klipsun Magazine

As we ring in the New Year resolutions are on everyone’s mind. We set goals to strive for greatness and to improve our relationships, but with all of our attention focused elsewhere we can often forget to reserve a little time and energy for ourselves.

This issue of Klipsun is all about your mind, body and spirit and improving connections between the three. With a healthy mind we are happier, with a healthy body we are stronger and with a healthy spirit we can abolish any obstacles in our path.

So embrace this New Year and follow your bliss.

The President And The Press: The Framing Of George W. Bush’S Speech To The United Nations, Stephen D. Cooper, Jim Kuypers, Matt Althous

Communications Faculty Research

In this essay, we provide a brief overview of how frames work, discuss the relationship of frames to the news media, and perform a qualitatively based, comparative framing analysis of President Bush’s speech to the United Nations and the mainstream American press response that followed. Findings suggest that by the end of formal military operations in Afghanistan, the press was increasingly framing its reports in such a way that President Bush’s public statements were inaccurately transmitted to the public at large. Three key findings are advanced: one, the press depicted the Bush administration as an enemy of civil liberties; two, …
