Using Hedge Information As A Risk Management Tool For Feeder Cattle, B. Williams, M. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson
Using Hedge Information As A Risk Management Tool For Feeder Cattle, B. Williams, M. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson
Cornhusker Economics
Hedging can be a valuable tool to minimize price uncertainty for producers. There are two types of hedges producers may use, a short hedge and a long hedge. Short hedges are used to lock in a net selling price when prices are expected to fall, while a long hedge is used to lock in a buying price when prices are expected to rise for a commodity that is bought and used as an input.
A short hedge is initiated by selling a contract on the futures market. The contract is generally bought back close to the time the contracted commodity …

The Interactive Research Guide: Will Function Bring Users Content? A Project Model Illustrated By A Proposed Paper-Writing Guide, Barry J. Bailey
Library Papers and Presentations
After reviewing the history of subject guides and their movement into an electronic format, their is an opportunity to change the format of information providing. Whereas a user goes to guides for lists of content, perhaps a user can go to guides to execute a function. By walking through the creation of a paper-writing guide, this idea of a functioning guide is illustrated.

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Forget about any barbequing. Taiwan is just beginning to recover from one of the worst typhoons in recent memory. Super Typhoon Sinlaku spent the entire weekend over the island, meandering up the east coast, doing a loop-de-loop around Yilan, moving northwest and doing a second loop-de-loop around Danshui, before taking another jaunt to the west and finally traipsing off to the northeast. Mountain areas have been inundated with between 3 AND 5 FEET OF RAIN, resulting in numerous casualties (7 dead and 14 missing so far) and catastrophic damage (bridges washed out, riverside hotels toppled or swept away, crops destroyed, …

Social networking sites are changing the way that libraries engage their users. Sometimes called social networking software or social networking services, these Web sites are designed to let users share their lives with friends, family, and the general public. Many librarians immediately saw the possibilities in the proliferating social networks--by connecting with our users in "their space," we are making ourselves readily available and removing many of the obstacles to their information needs. As reference librarians, our first reaction to new technology is to "set up desk"--to provide the same services we have traditionally offered, only in a new medium. …

Kicking A Gift Horse In The Mouth, Mark Y. Herring
Kicking A Gift Horse In The Mouth, Mark Y. Herring
Dacus Library Faculty Publications
Yes, of course I know the expression is “Don’t look,” not kicking, but our collective professional behavior makes “kicking” the more operative and appropriate verbal. More about this in due course. As an expression, “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” comes to us from the Lain, Noli equi dentes inspicere donate. Some argue Jerome said it first in 400 A.D., in which his words, very nearly our Latin literally translated, ran, “Never inspect the teeth of a gift horse.”

The Economic Impact Of Crp Acres In South Dakota Returning To Crop Production, Gary Taylor, Larry Janssen
Economics Staff Paper Series
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) was created in the 1985 Farm Bill as a program to remove highly erodible and environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production for from 10 to 15 years. Although CRP was originally viewed as a supply control program it rapidly evolved into a program that met many environmental objectives. In 2007 South Dakota had 729,397 acres of CRP contracts expired, which was nearly 47% of the 1.56 million acres enrolled in the program. During this period, there was no new farm bill or new CRP policy provisions. The policy environment in late 2006 and most of …

Rumination As A Mediator Of The Relation Between Mindfulness And Social Anxiety In A Clinical Sample, Stefan K. Schmertz
Rumination As A Mediator Of The Relation Between Mindfulness And Social Anxiety In A Clinical Sample, Stefan K. Schmertz
Psychology Dissertations
Recent literature has emphasized the possible benefits to mindfulness practice. Evidence for a negative relation between mindfulness and pathology has come from validity studies of several newly developed, self-report mindfulness questionnaires. Results illustrate a consistent negative relation between levels of self-report mindfulness and symptoms of depression, negative affect, and anxiety among college-student samples, however this relation has been previously untested within a clinical sample. The first aim of the present study was to explore the relation between mindfulness levels and social anxiety symptoms in a clinical sample diagnosed with social phobia. Because past research has found mindfulness interventions to be …

Why Don't They Learn?, Cynthia D. Fisher

Extract: Highhouse (2008) suggests that managers’ ‘‘stubborn’’ preferences for suboptimal selection practices are based on two beliefs: (1) that selection decisions can be near 100% correct and (2) that the expertise and intuition needed to make perfect decisions are developed by experience. I will suggest mechanisms by which these beliefs persist in the face of what should be contradictory feedback.

It is unusual for a severe foot injury to occur during excavation. The Victim must have been standing or squatting and, despite mention of a “trowel”, he may have been using the ubiquitous “pick”. The Inadequate equipment listed under Notes refers to the use of inappropriate tools, as identified by the investigators. If he was using a trowel, it is likely that he did not pinpoint the detector signal correctly and so began excavating on top of the mine, as has been reported with several other accidents in this theatre at this time.

The BOI team believes this detonation may have occurred as a result of the deminer having leant forward from a safe point and thrown a marking stone down onto the ground. His aim may have been off and he may have inadvertently thrown the stone onto a mine that had not previously been found in the lane. The mine has detonated, propelling the marking stone and other stones back at him with the marking stone striking him in the chest and the remaining stones having caused the injuries around the forehead and eyes. Unfortunately these injuries have resulted in his …

The primary cause of this accident is listed as a Field Control Inadequacy because the investigators determined that the supervisor allowed the machine to work in bad weather and did not correct the driver’s error. The secondary cause is listed as Victim Inattention because it seems that the driver did not intend to reverse out of the cleared area. There may have been inadequate area marking in place.
