Nigel J. Watson, longtime real estate agent and activist, moved into the Presbyterian Towers in 2004. Located at 430 Bay Street NE in downtown St. Petersburg, this facility has offered senior residential living since opening in 1968. In the early 1960s, Southwest Florida Presbyterians sought solutions to the problem of people (mostly retirees) who had difficulty locating affordable housing. With loan assistance from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, local Presbyteries began to build facilities. As of summer 2008, the Presbyterian Homes and Housing Foundation of Florida, Inc., operated Presbyterian Towers with sponsorship by the Tampa Bay …

Finding aid and full-text scan of paper (Click on “Additional Files” below) for Folklife Archives Project 318. Paper titled “The Jelly Snatcher” in which folk studies student Vickie Wright Carden details the paranormal activity surrounding Nancy Frew, a 23 year-old Bowling Green native, and her roommate, Vicki Taylor. Both women reported sensing malevolent spirits in their apartment, witnessed a comb fly off a dresser, and “lost” a jar of grape jelly—which they believe to have been “snatched” by the ghost. Carden offers possible theories relating to the poltergeist encounters, and even posits that Frew, along with her couch, attract the …

To Grill Or Not To Grill? Sep 2008

To Grill Or Not To Grill?

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Enough of politics! The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節; also known as the Moon Festival) is this Sunday, so let’s break out a case of Taiwan Beer, and slap some squid and pork patties on the barby. Well, maybe not…

You see, the government, led by the Environmental Protection Agency (環保署), is encouraging people to refrain from a favorite evening activity, namely the family (or community barbeque. According to agency estimates, this could help reduce the island’s carbon footprint, as over 6,000 tons of CO2 would be produced if even one-third of the nation’s residents fired up their grills. Subsequently, numerous city …

In Case You Missed It: Fragile Superpower

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

I was in the Chicago O’Hare Airport a few weeks ago and noticed that a re-release of Peter Navarro’s The Coming China Wars: Where They Will Be Fought and How They Can Be Won had made it onto that prized bit of airport-bookstore real estate, the shelf directly below the cash register. Anyone who has followed news on China in the past decade is familiar with the narrative Navarro, a professor of business, spins out here in hyperbolic boldface. His view, as one reviewer put it, is that “the Chinese will eat us for lunch” by building a massive military, …

Lin Daiyu--An Unyielding Girl In A Stifling Society, Haiwang Yuan

DLPS Faculty Publications

Lin Daiyu is a famous Chinese young woman created by one of the four classic Chinese novels titled A Dream of the Red Mansions. The loss of her love and life was the result of a society where human choices were suppressed. Her story shows that in a society full of intrigues and corruption, a girl as pure and naive as her could never survive.

Industrialization Strategy And Industrial Relations Policy In Malaysia, Sarosh C. Kuruvilla Sep 2008

Industrialization Strategy And Industrial Relations Policy In Malaysia, Sarosh C. Kuruvilla

Sarosh Kuruvilla

[Excerpt] In this chapter, a different view is taken of the relationship between industrialization strategies and industrial relations policy and practice. I argue that it is not the logic of industrialism or the levels of industrialization per se but the choice of an industrialization strategy and the shifts between such strategies that influence changes in industrial relations policies.

Linkages Between Industrialization Strategies And Industrial Relations/Human Resource Policies: Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, And India, Sarosh Kuruvilla Sep 2008

Linkages Between Industrialization Strategies And Industrial Relations/Human Resource Policies: Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, And India, Sarosh Kuruvilla

Sarosh Kuruvilla

The case studies of Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and India presented in this paper support the author's contention that a country's industrialization strategy for economic development profoundly influences its industrial relations (IR) and human resources (HR) policy goals. The author finds that import substitution industrialization was associated with IR/HR policy goals of pluralism and stability, while a low-cost export-oriented industrialization strategy was associated with IR/HR policy goals of cost containment and union suppression. In countries that moved from a low-cost export-oriented strategy to a higher value added export-oriented strategy, the focus of IR/HR policy goals shifted from cost containment to …
