Fmri Evidence Of Group Differences On The Word Memory Test In A Sample Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, James Douglas Larsen
Fmri Evidence Of Group Differences On The Word Memory Test In A Sample Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, James Douglas Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
The Word Memory Test (WMT) is a popular effort test that requires participants to memorize lists of paired words and repeat them back in a variety of different memory tasks. Four brain injured patients participated in two trials of the delayed recall (DR) portion of the WMT while undergoing fMRI scanning. In the first trial subjects put forth full effort, and during the second trial subjects were instructed to simulate increased memory impairment in order to represent poor effort. fMRI activation from both trials were compared in order to contrast full and simulated poor effort activation patterns during the WMT. …

Beijing Olympics 2008: The View From Vancouver (Host To Winter 2010 Olympics), David Luesink
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
It is interesting to note the similarities between criticisms of Olympic preparation in Vancouver and Beijing. Although the famously beautiful city of Vancouver is still two years away from hosting the winter Olympics in conjunction with the mountain village of Whistler, we are already running into the standard problems and criticisms familiar to Olympic planners of the past few decades. While air quality and the national human rights record are not likely to be the major issues for Vancouver, other themes show up on a regular basis in the local press, including cost overruns, natural disasters, transportation problems, and the …

Population Growth In New Hispanic Destinations, Kenneth M. Johnson, Daniel T. Lichter
Carsey School of Public Policy
Natural increase—more births than deaths—is now the major engine of Hispanic population growth in many large metro areas and their suburbs, as well as numerous smaller metropolitan areas and rural communities. Hispanics now account for half of U.S. population growth, and Hispanic population growth is the reason many communities grew instead of declined.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The world is undergoing a transition from a paper to a digital economy. It is essential for libraries in countries in the developing world to take part in this changing scene. Developing countries are being encouraged to invest in their national information infrastructure so that they can participate in knowledge-based development. Advances have brought many changes in libraries. Information and communication technology (ICT) has provided libraries with new opportunities to improve their resources and services. This study looks at the use of ICT tools by a population of library professionals in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, exploring the use …
A New Way To Look At Culture And Its Influence On Advertising Around The World, Pamela K. Morris
A New Way To Look At Culture And Its Influence On Advertising Around The World, Pamela K. Morris
Pamela K. Morris
Research investigates culture and its influencing role. With anthropological theories, a model is created to show how cultural dimensions influence media and advertising content. Encompassing 108 countries, a factor analysis of 71 country characteristics finds four dimensions: Holistic, Nationalistic, Feminine and Masculine. A content analysis of magazine advertisements provides data of images that are tested for correlations with cultural dimensions. The study updates cultural literature with new social phenomena data, like cell phone and Internet users.

The Effects Of Daily Diabetina Tea Consumption On Glycosylated Hemoglobin, Fasting Glucose And Lipid Levels, And Body Mass Index In Normoglycemic Individuals, Lauren A. Emes, Daniel C. Benyshek
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease responsible for high levels of morbidity and mortality in the United States, especially among some ethnic minority populations. Diabetina tea, a commercially-available herbal blend tea, is a well known herbal remedy for high blood sugar among Hispanic American diabetics. This study will examine the effect of twice-daily unsweetened Diabetina tea consumption over an 8 week period on glucose (sugar) and lipid (fat) metabolism. Potential effects of Diabetina tea consumption on glucose metabolism will be measured by glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose tests, while the potential effects of Diabetina tea consumption on …

Contemporary Chinese Journalism: An Interview With Judy Polumbaum, Timothy Weston
Contemporary Chinese Journalism: An Interview With Judy Polumbaum, Timothy Weston
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
I’ve just finished reading China Ink: The Changing Face of Chinese Journalism by Judy Polumbaum with Xiong Lei. Given the plentiful recent discussion of the Chinese media and censorship during the lead up to the 2008 Olympic games, this book makes for fascinating and very timely reading. It consists of a short introduction by Judy Polumbaum, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Iowa, and the transcripts of interviews that she and Xiong Lei, who has worked as a reporter in Beijing for twenty-five years, conducted from late 2005 until late 2006 with journalists currently working in …

Beijing’S Olympic Pollution Forecast: "Haze" And Hot Air, Alex Pasternack
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
For an idea of what kind of air athletes and spectators can expect during the Olympics–and what Beijingers can expect for some time to come–the past week has offered telling indications.
Or it hasn’t.
At the start of last week, for the fourth day in a row, emissions made it hard to see down the street, despite the fact the government ordered half the city’s cars off the road and closed factories. Officials said they would implement an emergency contingency plan on top of the existing anti-smog measures if pollution lingers closer to the Games.
Twenty-four hours later, the difference …
A New Index For Comparing The Diversity Of Population Inflows And Population Stocks, George Galster, Tatiana Homonoff
A New Index For Comparing The Diversity Of Population Inflows And Population Stocks, George Galster, Tatiana Homonoff
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
The paper introduces a new “diversification index” (DIV), which compares the composition of the current or recent population inflow and the composition of pre-existing population stock, with positive (negative) values signifying a process generating more (less) diversity in the stock. Higher absolute values for DIV signify larger differences in the composition of the inflows and the pre-existing stocks of population. DIV is easy to compute and interpret, adaptable to handle population inflows or outflows, and widely applicable to a variety of phenomena.
The paper defines DIV, discusses its properties, and calculates it for several hypothetical cases as a way of …
Confronting Fiscal Stress In Municipal Governments: Support By Michigan Residents For Eight Common Strategies, Jered Carr
Working Group on Interlocal Services Cooperation
This report discusses findings from a survey of 660 randomly selected Michigan residents in winter 2007. The survey examined attitudes of Michigan residents toward eight strategies to resolving situations where current revenues are inadequate to support local services at past levels. The strategies examined fall into two broad categories. The first set (tax increases, state and federal aid) seeks to increase local revenues available to support services at previously existing levels and quality. The second set of strategies focus on reducing the costs of providing services with the objective of maintaining previous levels at a lower cost. This set includes …

The Moral Sensitivity And Character Of Public Relations Students: A Preliminary Study, Mathew Cabot
The Moral Sensitivity And Character Of Public Relations Students: A Preliminary Study, Mathew Cabot
Faculty Publications
Public relations practitioners and academics have been exploring ethics models, revising ethics codes, holding ethics workshops, and building ethics curricula -- all in an attempt to address the ethical lapses that continue to occur in the profession. Little of this activity, however, has included research dealing with the moral development of public relations practitioners and its connection to ethics theories, codes, and instruction. Cabot (2004) explored the integration of moral development theories into applied professional ethics by introducing the Four-Component Model of moral functioning. By breaking moral functioning into the four components of sensitivity, judgment, motivation, and character, the FCM …
Characteristics Of Patients Admitted To Florida Hospitals For Cardiovascular Diseases
Characteristics Of Patients Admitted To Florida Hospitals For Cardiovascular Diseases
Florida Public Health Review
The present study evaluated the variations in demographic and clinical characteristics of patients hospitalized for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Florida hospitals in 2005. Using the 2005 data from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, patients admitted for any CVD were extracted by using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th edition (ICD-9) codes. Of all patients (N=2,534,641) hospitalized in 2005, about 17.7% (n=450,559) were admitted for CVD. There were nine distinct diagnosis groups for CVD and about 33.2% and 31.8% of patients were admitted for other forms of heart disease (OHD) and ischemic heart disease (IHD), respectively. Cerebrovascular disease or …
Patterns Of Social Participation: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of Creating Social Capital, Camille Miller
Patterns Of Social Participation: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of Creating Social Capital, Camille Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Given the numerous benefits noted in academic research from having social capital, investigators may now turn to looking at what makes a person likely to create it. In this study I examine whether building social capital in high school through participation in religious, athletic, and volunteer activities makes individuals more likely to continue to create it as adults through participation in similar activities. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study, I employ both multilevel and seemingly unrelated regression models. I find that early participation in religious and athletic activities increases the likelihood of doing two out of three social …
Making A Sure Decision Now For Potential Disaster Assistance Later, Bradley Lubben
Making A Sure Decision Now For Potential Disaster Assistance Later, Bradley Lubben
Cornhusker Economics
The new farm bill included some significant changes in the farm income safety net. As a result, crop producers will need to make a number of decisions about new farm program participation, some in a very short period of time.
The first program decision for crop producers is the simple question of signing up for the 2008 commodity programs. These crop support programs did not change for 2008, except for some legislative language that will eliminate farms with less than ten base acres from the farm program, unless those farms were limited resource or socially-disadvantaged farms. The deadline for sign-up …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
My tea nearly dropped to the table here in Leicester, England, when I saw The Independent headline. “Beijing 2008 Olympics: Tiananmen orchestra fails to drown out clamour of protests,” it read, conjuring up images of Richard Gere and a chorus of Tibetan monks chanting a hundred violinists off a Tiananmen stage. So, it’d finally come, the wellspring of protest of the regime had burst, I thought. I started to read. An orchestra of 2,008 musicians was flown in from all over the world, I learned, while “foreign and local groups… have been told to give plenty of notice” for permission …

The Olympics Around The World: Japan, James Farrer
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
While the English language press has been reporting that over 100,000 police and 30,000 soldiers have been readied to protect China’s Olympic city, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun has come up with figures a full order of magnitude higher. The August 4, 2008, morning Asahi Shimbun (Tokyo edition) ran a front page feature article reporting that despite claims by the Chinese government that no one has been made to leave the city, nearly 1.4 million migrant workers have been moved out of the city for the Olympics. In turn, the report says, nearly 1.2 million police and 200,000 army personnel have moved …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Only a short six-hour ride on board the shiny new bullet trains moving at 230km per hour from Beijing, the formerly sleepy port city of Qingdao will be host to the Olympic sailing events for 2008. As a sport with relatively high costs and requiring access to the ocean or at least large lakes, sailing is not a popular sport in China but is emerging as a favorite of the newly rich. In Qingdao and Beijing the influence of class has fundamentally affected government planning and China’s Olympic development. Rather than bring investment and tourism into poor or less developed …

Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans
Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans
Florida Public Health Review
This study tests the hypothesis that disparities of hypertension risk in African Americans is related to lead exposure, perceptions of racism, and stress, among urban (Roxbury, MA) and rural (Gadsden, FL) communities. Analysis of preliminary data from Phase I reveal 60% in Gadsden and 39% in Roxbury respondents self-reported having hypertension. In Gadsden 80% people did not know if their residence contained lead paint, compared to 45% in Roxbury. In Gadsden County, 58% of respondents reported experiencing racial discrimination in different settings compared with 72% in Roxbury. In regression analyses high cholesterol emerged as a significant predictors of hypertension in …
