Capturing Pre-Evacuation Trips And Associative Delays: A Case Study Of The Evacuation Of Key West, Florida For Hurricane Wilma, Melany Strike Noltenius Aug 2008

Capturing Pre-Evacuation Trips And Associative Delays: A Case Study Of The Evacuation Of Key West, Florida For Hurricane Wilma, Melany Strike Noltenius

Doctoral Dissertations

The time it takes for the residents to evacuate an area is calculated as an evacuation time estimate (ETE). In theory, these time estimates are calculated based on a number of inputs, including clearance time, the impact of traffic management techniques, and the time for the public to prepare to evacuate (Dow, 2000). Evacuation models can calculate clearance times, as well as incorporate the temporal impact of traffic management techniques, like contra-flow traffic. However, these models do not include delays associated with pre-evacuation trips. Because these trips are not well represented in hurricane evacuation models, the evacuation time estimate may …

Conceptualizations Of Teamwork And Leadership: A Cross- Cultural Analysis, Ioana Mot Aug 2008

Conceptualizations Of Teamwork And Leadership: A Cross- Cultural Analysis, Ioana Mot

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study investigated differences in the conceptualization of teamwork and leadership in two countries with culturally diverse backgrounds, Romania and the United States. We expected to find between-culture differences in the conceptualizations of teamwork and leadership based on cultural antecedents (collectivistic societal and in-group values). We also investigated a potential cultural shift in the Romanian nation, based on age. The conceptualizations of teamwork and leadership were examined and compared using Pathfinder.

The Romanian sample displayed higher collectivistic values than the U.S. sample. A cultural shift was observed in the Romanian nation, such that the younger participants reported lower collectivistic …

Just Another Day At The Office: An Investigation Into How Public College Administrators Balance The First Amendment Rights Of The Student Press And The Broader Interests Of Their Campuses, James Edward Miller Aug 2008

Just Another Day At The Office: An Investigation Into How Public College Administrators Balance The First Amendment Rights Of The Student Press And The Broader Interests Of Their Campuses, James Edward Miller

Doctoral Dissertations

Courts have ruled for decades that student journalists at public colleges and universities are entitled to constitutional protection. As a result, higher education officials are faced regularly with dilemmas that pit the free campus press against what the administration sees as the greater good of the institution at large. With a summary of relevant case law as its backdrop, this qualitative study describes how public college administrators balance the First Amendment rights of the campus press and the broader interests of their institutions.

A number of authors have suggested that open dialogue and mutual understanding are crucial for a healthy …

A Social Identity Framework For Examining Leadership Schema Congruence: A Multilevel Analysis, Joy T. Oliver Aug 2008

A Social Identity Framework For Examining Leadership Schema Congruence: A Multilevel Analysis, Joy T. Oliver

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent leadership research has focused on the importance of implicit leadership theory (ILT) for organizational outcomes (e.g., Epitropaki & Martin, 2005; Hains, Hogg, & Duck, 1997). Specifically, when followers perceive their leader’s trait profile to be closer to the ILTs they endorse (i.e., leadership schema congruence), this results in a number of positive outcomes (e.g., Epitropaki & Martin, 2005; Hains et al., 1997; Martin & Epitropaki, 2001). Although recent leadership research has highlighted the need for multilevel examinations of leadership (Hall & Lord, 1995; Lord & Hall, 1992), no multilevel models of leadership schema congruence have been examined to date. …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Aspects Of Personality Structure, Chad R. Sims Aug 2008

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Aspects Of Personality Structure, Chad R. Sims

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to further the developing understanding of mindfulness and its role in psychological well-being. Although recent studies have examined this construct using various self-report measures, there is a paucity of research concerning the potential impact of mindfulness on unconscious aspects of personality structure as understood in psychodynamic theory. A total of 81 university students were recruited from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and administered several cards from the Thematic Apperception Test, along with two validated self-report measures of mindfulness, and a measure of social desirability. The TAT stories were scored for defensive functioning using the …

Transition Variables And The Personality Assessment Inventory In University Counseling Centers, Lauren K. Shaw Aug 2008

Transition Variables And The Personality Assessment Inventory In University Counseling Centers, Lauren K. Shaw

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between transition variables and Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) profiles of university counseling center clients. If these variables have a significant impact on PAI profiles, then understanding how these variables are related to personality profiles will provide important information for diagnosis and treatment planning. Archival data was reviewed for 838 clients seen at a midsized southeastern university counseling center. Transition variables included international or domestic student status, distance from home, student classification (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate), parent education level, and rural or urban classification of hometown. Ethnicity and gender …

The Counselor Color Consciousness Scale: Evidence For Relevance, Reliability, And Validity, Dwight David Tolliver Aug 2008

The Counselor Color Consciousness Scale: Evidence For Relevance, Reliability, And Validity, Dwight David Tolliver

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the current investigation was to develop the Counselor Color Consciousness Scale (CCCS) that was constructed based on Ridley’s (1995, 2005) theoretical conceptions of this construct. This study aimed to assess the relevance, reliability, and validity of the CCCS as a scientific tool measuring racial attitudes of white therapists and their work with clients of color. The sample consisted of 73 white therapists in Study 1, and 118 white therapists in Study 2. Both studies used a web survey format.

Overall, the results were noteworthy in several respects. First, the CCCS showed high internal consistency in both studies. …

Interest, Convenience, Or Necessity? An Experimental Study Of Listener Responses To Localism In Radio Programming And Ownership, Glenn Thomas Hubbard Aug 2008

Interest, Convenience, Or Necessity? An Experimental Study Of Listener Responses To Localism In Radio Programming And Ownership, Glenn Thomas Hubbard

Doctoral Dissertations

Localism has long been a key goal of broadcast regulatory policy. In recent years, members of the FCC have echoed the often-repeated claims of community activists that lowpower radio stations, being inherently more “local”, not only serve the public interest more effectively but also function as an antidote to what many consider the negative effects of nationally consolidated, corporate ownership of increasing numbers of radio stations. However, such a claim hinges on the assumption that small, low-power and/or community radio stations are able to compete effectively for at least some of the same listeners big corporate stations pursue. Furthermore, there …

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding Aug 2008

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding

Social Sciences

Oxygen isotope determinations from 92 California mussel (Mytilus californianus) shells from ten archaeological sites in central coastal California show relatively stable seasonal harvesting patterns between 3600 CAL BP and historic contact (AD 1769). Coastal occupants harvested mussels nearly year-round and seem to have occupied individual residential bases throughout the seasonal cycle. Interior groups returned with mussels from the coast mostly in the spring and early summer, but almost never in the late summer/early fall when nut crops were harvested. These findings suggest two inter-dependent groups with distinct seasonal settlement strategies: inland people, reliant on acorns and other nut …

Western Juniper (Juniperus Occidentalis) Ecology With An Exercise In Remote Sensing Techniques, Elizabeth A. Goralski Aug 2008

Western Juniper (Juniperus Occidentalis) Ecology With An Exercise In Remote Sensing Techniques, Elizabeth A. Goralski

Geography Masters Research Papers

Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) has been expanding its biogeographic range since the mid-1800's, resulting in decreased biodiversity, altered wildlife habitat, increased soil erosion, reduced stream flows and reduced forage production. The direct causes of western juniper aforestation are unclear but appear to be related to altered fire regimes, over grazing, and climatic shifts.

This study seeks to determine how Landsat images combined with Digital Orthoquads (DOQs) can be used to examine the geographic distribution of western juniper. Satellite imagery has yet to be applied to the large scale mapping of western juniper aforestation, resulting in the lack of …

Comparative Risk Assessment And Alternative Closure Techniques Of Abandoned Manure Storage Basins In Central Minnesota, Joe Storlien Aug 2008

Comparative Risk Assessment And Alternative Closure Techniques Of Abandoned Manure Storage Basins In Central Minnesota, Joe Storlien

Culminating Projects in Environmental and Technological Studies

Manure storage basins are a necessary component to many animal agriculture production systems. Manures within these basins are a valuable source of nutrients for crops, however they must be managed appropriately to protect water resources. Some contaminants found within animal manures may pose potential human or environmental health risks.

The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine characteristics of eight sites containing abandoned manure storage basins; 2) quantify contaminant concentration in soil and groundwater at the abandoned basin sites; 3) quantify the comparative risk posed by the abandoned basins; 4) determine overall comparative risk posed by the abandoned manure …

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan Aug 2008

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan

Agribusiness

The objective of this study is to identify experimental economic tools that can be employed to explain the role of economic behavior in overweight and obesity in the household. We identify three economic experiments that can be used to understand how parent-child economic relationships relate to obesity. Loss aversion experiments are discussed as a tool to understand challenges some individuals face in achieving a healthy diet. Finally, testbed experiments are introduced as a means to test and understand new policies and incentives for better health at the household level.

Economic Factors And Body Weight: An Empirical Analysis, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson L. Lusk Aug 2008

Economic Factors And Body Weight: An Empirical Analysis, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson L. Lusk

Agribusiness

With this study, we investigate the effects of changes in economic factors on body weight by constructing a utility theoretic model. The model is empirically estimated by combining data on individuals’ body weight, demographic and physical activity information, and state level measures pertaining to the prices of food away from home, food at home, and wages. By combining these data sources, we aim to estimate directly the weight effects of price and income changes. The empirical analysis suggests that decreasing the price of food at home could decrease body weight, a finding which has important public policy implications.

Verification And Implementation Of Language-Based Deception Indicators In Civil And Criminal Narratives, Joan Bachenko, Eileen Fitzpatrick, Michael Schonwetter Aug 2008

Verification And Implementation Of Language-Based Deception Indicators In Civil And Criminal Narratives, Joan Bachenko, Eileen Fitzpatrick, Michael Schonwetter

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Our goal is to use natural language processing to identify deceptive and non-deceptive passages in transcribed narratives. We begin by motivating an analysis of language-based deception that relies on specific linguistic indicators to discover deceptive statements. The indicator tags are assigned to a document using a mix of automated and manual methods. Once the tags are assigned, an interpreter automatically discriminates between deceptive and truthful statements based on tag densities. The texts used in our study come entirely from "real world" sources-criminal statements, police interrogations and legal testimony. The corpus was hand-tagged for the truth value of all propositions that …
