Access Transformed: Building A Primary Care Workforce For The 21st Century, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Though access to primary care protects health and cuts costs, this report shows there aren't enough primary care doctors and nurses at health centers to meet the need, with some areas having almost none – a situation that cannot be solved just by expanding health insurance coverage. The report indicates the availability of a primary care workforce depends on where you live, and primary care clinicians are not locating in areas that need them most, especially low-income communities. The study includes state-level projections of growing patient needs expected to stretch the health care system in years ahead. It was conducted …

A Note On The Effectiveness Of Behavioural Rehabilitation For Reducing Inter-Dog Aggression In Shelter Dogs, Jane S. Orihel, David Fraser

The effectiveness of a rehabilitation program for reducing inter-dog aggression was evaluated at the municipal animal shelter. Sixteen dogs (of 60 examined) met the study criteria of medium inter-dog aggression as determined by an inter-dog aggression test. These dogs received a 10-day treatment of daily rehabilitation for 30 min (rehabilitation group, n = 9) or daily release into an outdoor enclosure for 30 min (control group, n = 7). Rehabilitation consisted of desensitising and counter-conditioning dogs to the approach of other ‘‘stimulus’’ dogs. Most dogs in the rehabilitation group showed a decline in aggression scores when re-tested after the last …

Cultural Distance And The Us Immigrant-Trade Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Using data from the World and the European Values Surveys, we calculate cultural distances between the US and 54 immigrant home countries and examine the influences of cultural distance and immigrant populations on US imports from and exports to immigrants’ home countries during the years 1997–2004. Our study indicates that, for both US imports and exports, the trade‐enhancing effect of immigrants partially offsets the trade‐inhibiting effect of cultural distance. Further, decomposing our measure of cultural distance into two component dimensions and revisiting the immigrant–trade relationship, we find significant variation in the extent to which immigrants counter the trade‐inhibiting influences of …

Social Exchange Orientation And Conflict Communication In Romantic Relationships, Justin P. Boren, Amy M. Bippus, Sabrina Worsham

Communication

Prior research has not conclusively established how individuals' social exchange orientation (EO) affects their communication in, and satisfaction with, romantic elationships. Surveying 466 individuals in romantic relationships, we found that concern about being underbenefitted was more strongly correlated with conflict behaviors than concern about overbenefittedness, and that conflict communication influenced the relationship between exchange orientation and relationship satisfaction. We discuss the need for further research to discover how EO may influence communication patterns as relationships develop.

This presentation, delivered at the ExLibris Users Group of North American (ELUNA) 2008 annual conference, was a case study of the New Hampshire History Digital Collections project at the University of New Hampshire Library. The collections are drawn from a variety of sources, including legacy digitized state documents and local histories, newly digitized and transcribed American Civil War manuscripts, and books scanned in conjunction with the Open Content Alliance. Topic included included legacy collection migration into DigiTool, METS implementation, project workflow, and collection level DigiTool interface customization.

In the past three decades radical right parties have made important electoral advances in most countries across Western Europe. In some cases such parties have managed to endure and grow after their initial electoral breakthroughs, while in other cases they quickly collapsed. To understand the reasons for their divergent trajectories the paper focuses on the development of four radical right parties after their initial breakthroughs: the French National Front, the Austrian Freedom Party, the German Republikaner and theSwedish New Democracy. This paper reviews the algorithms used by Vector Signal Analyzers to measure Modulation Error Ratio (MER) and derives the explicit functional dependence of measured MER on phase noise of digital transmitters. The modulation error model is introduced and the analytical expression for key estimated parameters required to obtain MER measure are derived. The essential elements of algorithms employed by MER measurement instruments to estimate amplitude scale, frequency offset, and initial phase intercept and the resulting MER are identified. Multiple economic development theories suggest that research and innovation in emerging technologies will cluster in certain locations rather then distributing equally among all regions. If this is the case, this distributional pattern has implications for where future economic opportunities as well as future risks will be concentrated. In this paper, we probe nanotechnology (hereafter nano) research and commercialization at a regional level. The study examines the top 30 US “nanodistricts” or metropolitan areas which lead in nanotechnology research activity over the 1990-2006 timeframe. Despite the apparent acceptance of funding embryonic stem cell research in Canada, the public debate continues. Religious groups have been particularly vocal, especially from the Catholic Church, in expressing their opposition to the research. As a consequence of this high-profile public debate, citizens who look to recognized authorities for guidance on the issue might receive conflicting advice from religious and political leaders. The content of the messages from these different sources can vary widely. Religious groups typically focus on ethical reasoning, while secular elites (including politicians) often highlight more material considerations. The purpose of this study is to document the effects of child sexual abuse among children, siblings and non-offending parents so the needs of child victims and their families can be further addressed. Children are often referred to Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) for mental health and other support needs. Today most sexually abused children receive the same treatment from CACs, but there is variability in the symptoms and needs these children and their family members present with. Unlike the dramatic recent natural disasters in Burma and China, North Korea’s current food crisis, a product of self-destructive policies, bad weather, and global food price increases, has metastasized largely beyond public view, abetted by Pyongyang’s penchant for secrecy. Bolivia’s political system has recently undergone a dramatic transformation after nearly two decades dominated by three “systemic” parties (MNR, ADN, MIR). Despite resisting challenges from “outsiders” (whether populists, leftists, or indigenous movements) for nearly two decades, the party system was quickly swept away after the “gas war” of October 2003. In its place, the new political landscape appears polarized into two distinct camps: Evo Morales’s MAS and an opposition led by PODEMOS. Esop Fables: The Impact Of Employee Stock Ownership Plans On Labor Disputes, Peter Cramton, Hamid Mehran, Joseph Tracy

By the early 1990s employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) had become as prevalent in unionized firms as in nonunionized firms. However, little research has been devoted to examining the implications of ESOPs for collective bargaining, or cross ownership more generally. In this paper, we extend the signaling model of Cramton and Tracy (1992) to allow partial ownership by the union. We demonstrate that ESOPs create incentives for unions to become weaker bargainers. As a result, the model predicts that ESOPs will lead to a reduction in strike incidence and in the fraction of labor disputes that involve a strike. We …
