Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

Further than Ethics concieved as mere obedience, Republican Ethics expresses the idea of duty for freedom and Liberty. This article explores several ways in a new ethics and a new law paradigms, after the objective Roman Law and the subjective modern Law.

When Does Legal Origin Matter?, Mohammad Amin, Priya Ranjan Nov 2008

When Does Legal Origin Matter?, Mohammad Amin, Priya Ranjan

Priya Ranjan

A vast literature documents better economic institutions in common law compared with civil law countries. The present paper argues that legal origin alone is insufficient to explain differences in the quality of economic institutions across countries. Rather, it is the interaction between legal origin and the quality of political institutions that is important. Empirical evidence from a cross-section of 90 countries on entry regulation, a measure of how business friendly economic institutions are towards firms, strongly supports our claim. For example, we find that the number of procedures required to start a business are lower in common law compared with …

One of the blessings of the Internet Age is the availability of valuable information about the past, in this case Taiwanese history. This post introduces a few English and Chinese websites that I have found most interesting/useful. The list is hardly meant to be exhaustive, and people should feel free to recommend other sites that would benefit all those interested in this topic.

Introduction To Lgbtq America Today, John C. Hawley Nov 2008

Introduction To Lgbtq America Today, John C. Hawley

English

l was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and learned from my classmates in seventh grade that boys who wrote with their left hand or wore green and yellow on Thursdays were homos. Because I did both, I knew I was in deep trouble from the start and might have some pretending to do. Such was the atmosphere for LGBTQ folks in the United States throughout the 1950s. Things loosened just a bit in the 1960s, when hippies were shaking society up. Then, in the 1970s, gay folks seemed to be-a lot more visible--disturbingly so, in the minds of many-and …

I Know It’S Only Rock’N’Roll (But They Don’T Like It)—The Sequel…, Jeff Wasserstrom

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

My next posts were all supposed to deal with my recent trip to China, but news about the long-awaited Guns’n’Roses release, “Chinese Democracy,” stirring up controversy in China is something that I can’t resist weighing in on. I won’t go into details about whether or how it has actually been banned in Beijing, as you can find out about that other places, including here and here. And I don’t need to fill you in on the China-related content of the album (a work I hasten to admit I haven’t heard yet), as that is covered thoroughly in an excellent Huffington …

An Investigation Of Tourists’ Patterns Of Obligation To Protect The Environment, Sara Dolnicar, Friedrich Leisch Nov 2008

An Investigation Of Tourists’ Patterns Of Obligation To Protect The Environment, Sara Dolnicar, Friedrich Leisch

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Destinations are increasingly concerned about the environmental sustainability of the local tourism industry. A number of authors have proposed a demand-driven approach to sustainable destination management as a complementary measure to traditional supply-sided interventions. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the feasibility of such a demand-driven approach. This study contributes to this gap by investigating whether individuals who feel morally obliged to behave in an environmentally friendly manner represent useful target segments for destination management aiming to improve the ecological sustainability of the local tourism industry. Results indicate that distinctly different moral obligation segments exist that differ in …

In Case You Missed It: Post-Mao China

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Last year, the Association for Asian Studies inaugurated a new series of booklets under their “Resources for Teaching About Asia” branch called “Key Issues in Asian Studies.” The first two booklets in the series were published in 2007: Political Rights in Post-Mao China by Merle Goldman and Gender, Sexuality, and Body Politics in Modern Asia by Michael Peletz. (Those interested in applying to write a “Key Issues” booklet should see the AAS’s author guidelines.)

Goldman’s book on political rights in contemporary China canvases the factions that dominated political discussions in the post-Mao era, and is key reading for those who …

The Qualitative Report

On Ethnography: Approaches to Language and Literacy Research written by Shirley Brice Heath and Brian V. Street with Molly Mills is an overview of theory and practices of ethnography as used in language and literacy research. Drs. Heath and Street draw upon their extensive backgrounds as they explain how to plan, implement, and make public an ethnographic study. Ms. Mills, identified as a student ethnographer, provides the real-world example to the wider and more abstract ethnographic world of the authors. Illustrations and examples are concise and helpful to those new to ethnography, although the book will be informative to all …

Thanksgiving In China…? Nov 2008

Thanksgiving In China…?

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Despite calls several years ago for a Chinese Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving hasn’t caught on in China as Christmas has. And with good reason–the holiday hasn’t brought much to China other than (last year) Paris Hilton.

But tomorrow begins the Christmas shopping season (a holiday that has caught on in some places in China–if largely for its commercial meanings), and this new holiday may have more dire implications in China this year. Analysts are predicting slow Christmas sales in the U.S., which may mean a slow season for Chinese manufacturers as well.

Social Norm, Social Capital And The Sustainability Of Small Scale Economies, Ram Ranjan Nov 2008

Social Norm, Social Capital And The Sustainability Of Small Scale Economies, Ram Ranjan

Ram Ranjan

Social capital and social norms in agrarian settings encourage farmers to come together and sustainably manage their scarce common property resources, such as water. The role of social norms is crucial towards determining whether or not farmers are able to overcome the temptations of the market that place emphasis on immediate higher benefits at the cost of future sustainability and the risk of getting marginalized in a rural community. The capability to collectively co-manage resources is dependent upon the ability of the community to penalize the defectors. In this paper, the extent of punishment required to deter defection is derived …

Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard Nov 2008

Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Marriage and family research has its foundation in the positivist tradition, which dismisses the relevance of morality to the scientific enterprise. Yet morality is inherent in marriage and family studies—both in the topics studied and in methodology. In this conceptual research, positivist assumptions are explicated to show that positivist methodology relies on a stance of moral neutrality that turns out to be a hidden morality. This hidden morality requires that people be studied as other objects. The need for a methodology that has an explicit moral philosophy and that acknowledges that humans are not “things” is discussed. Levinas' relational philosophy …

What Comes First, Agricultural Growth Or Democracy?, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Nov 2008

What Comes First, Agricultural Growth Or Democracy?, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Lilyan E. Fulginiti Publications

Today, the international community faces two major development challenges, how to ignite growth and how to establish democracy. Economic research has identified two plausible hypotheses regarding this association. The first hypothesis emphasizes the need to start with democracy and institutions that secure property rights. The second hypothesis emphasizes the need to start with physical and human capital accumulation. In this paper we discuss some of the econometric evidence on the relationship between institutions, human capital, and agricultural productivity growth across developed and developing countries with the objective of finding support for one or the other hypothesis. We use Barro type …

In Case You Missed It: Three Faces Of Chinese Power, Eric Setzekorn

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

David Lampton, a distinguished professor of international relations at SAIS, knows this is a great time to publish a book on Chinese power. As a new administration, which he may play a role in, attempts to craft a balanced and articulate China policy, his newest effort, The Three Faces of Chinese Power; Might, Money and Minds, will be influential and widely read. The book is a comprehensive and largely successful attempt to grasp the motivation, intent and challenges for Chinese international relations as China becomes a global leader and East Asia the center of world economic, political and military power. …
