Policy Brief No. 1 - Cognitive Function, Aging And Paid Work, Laurie M. Corna, David Haardt
Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Research/Policy Brief
In the context of an aging population and aging workforce, we consider the relationship between cognitive function and paid work. Cognitive function is maintained for most adults as they age, and there is evidence of a positive relationship between stimulating and engaging work environments and both levels of cognitive function and their maintenance over time. At the same time, irregular and long work hours are associated with poorer cognitive outcomes. However, the relationship between paid work and cognitive function is complex; education and training as well as health status are also related to cognitive function and work. We discuss implications …

Linguistic Ambiguity In Language-Based Jokes, Sarah Seewoester
Linguistic Ambiguity In Language-Based Jokes, Sarah Seewoester
College of Communication Master of Arts Theses
The purpose of this study was to (1) identify patterns in joke type, word class, word class progressions, use of morphologic/syllabic mechanisms, and compound word manipulations in the “serious” and “humorous” interpretations of puns, (2) compare results with two previous studies (Attardo et al. 1994b and Bucaria 2004) and delineate discrepancies, and (3) to explore how language pattern(s) in English puns contribute to our theoretical understanding of linguistic interpretation.
From a collection of 6,000 puns published online, 225 were randomly chosen and analyzed for alliterative, phonological, lexical, and syntactic categorizations, as well as for patterns in word class, word class …
Alcohol Use And Gender Effects On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Cocaine-Using Methadone Patients, Carla J. Rash, Nancy M. Petry
Alcohol Use And Gender Effects On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Cocaine-Using Methadone Patients, Carla J. Rash, Nancy M. Petry
UCHC Articles - Research
Injection drug users engage in behaviors that increase the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases. Although methadone maintenance (MM) is highly effective in decreasing heroin use and the spread of HIV, polydrug use, especially the combined use of cocaine and alcohol, is common in MM patients. Alcohol use is independently associated with HIV risk behaviors, and the effects of alcohol use on risk behaviors may vary by gender. This study evaluated the effects of recent heavy alcohol use and gender with respect to HIV risk behaviors in 118 cocaine-abusing methadone patients. Both lifetime and past month …

Cow Preference And Usage Of Free Stalls Compared With An Open Pack Area, J. A. Fregonesi, M. A. G. Von Keyserlingk, D. M. Weary
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Free-stall housing systems are designed to provide a comfortable and hygienic lying area, but some aspects of stall design may restrict usage by cows. The aim of this study was to compare free-stall housing with a comparable lying area (open pack) without stall partitions. We predicted that cows would spend more time lying down and standing in the bedded area when provided access to an open pack than when in free stalls. We also predicted that cows would spend less time standing outside of the lying area and less time perching with the front 2 hooves in the lying area …

Prevalence And Risk Factors For Skin Lesions On Legs Of Dairy Cattle Housed In Freestalls In Norway, C. Kielland, L. E. Ruud, A. J. Zanella, O. Østerås
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Appropriate indoor housing facilities for dairy cattle promote improved animal welfare. Skin alterations are an indicator of dysfunctional housing. The purpose was to determine the relationship between different housing design and skin lesions, hence providing farmers more insight into how to reduce the occurrence of lesions. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2,335 animals in 232 Norwegian freestall-housed dairy cattle from September 2006 to June 2007. A model was established to investigate risk factors related to the presence of lesions including hair loss, swelling, and wounds on the legs of dairy cattle. Separate models were developed to investigate risk factors …
Assessing Animal Welfare: Different Philosophies, Different Scientific Approaches, David Fraser
Assessing Animal Welfare: Different Philosophies, Different Scientific Approaches, David Fraser
Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection
Attempts to improve animal welfare have commonly centered around three broad objectives: (1) to ensure good physical health and functioning of animals, (2) to minimize unpleasant ‘‘affective states’’ (pain, fear, etc.) and to allow animals normal pleasures, and (3) to allow animals to develop and live in ways that are natural for the species. Each of these objectives has given rise to scientific approaches for assessing animal welfare. An emphasis on health and functioning has led to assessment methods based on rates of disease, injury, mortality, and reproductive success. An emphasis on affective states has led to assessment methods based …

Markov Modeling Of Breast Cancer, Chunling Cong, Chris P. Tsokos
Markov Modeling Of Breast Cancer, Chunling Cong, Chris P. Tsokos
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Previous work with respect to the treatments and relapse time for breast cancer patients is extended by applying a Markov chain to model three different types of breast cancer patients: alive without ever having relapse, alive with relapse, and deceased. It is shown that combined treatment of tamoxifen and radiation is more effective than single treatment of tamoxifen in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer. However, if the patient has already relapsed from breast cancer, single treatment of tamoxifen would be more appropriate with respect to survival time after relapse. Transition probabilities between three stages during different time periods, 2-year, …

Library Scholarly Publications
Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners. The project integrates easy-to-use technical tools with instructional design principles and resources for digital teaching and learning. The result is a replicable web environment where faculty …

Examples Of Computing Power For Zero-Inflated And Overdispersed Count Data, Suzanne R. Doyle
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Examples of zero-inflated Poisson and negative binomial regression models were used to demonstrate conditional power estimation, utilizing the method of an expanded data set derived from probability weights based on assumed regression parameter values. SAS code is provided to calculate power for models with a binary or continuous covariate associated with zero-inflation.
Assessing Trends: Monte Carlo Trials With Four Different Regression Methods, Daniel R. Thompson
Assessing Trends: Monte Carlo Trials With Four Different Regression Methods, Daniel R. Thompson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Poisson, Negative Binomial, and Quasi-Poisson Regression methods were assessed for testing the statistical significance of a trend by performing 10,000 simulations. The Poisson method should be used when data follow a Poisson distribution. The other methods should be used when data follow a normal distribution.

Level Robust Methods Based On The Least Squares Regression Estimator, Marie Ng, Rand R. Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Heteroscedastic consistent covariance matrix (HCCM) estimators provide ways for testing hypotheses about regression coefficients under heteroscedasticity. Recent studies have found that methods combining the HCCM-based test statistic with the wild bootstrap consistently perform better than non-bootstrap HCCM-based methods (Davidson & Flachaire, 2008; Flachaire, 2005; Godfrey, 2006). This finding is more closely examined by considering a broader range of situations which were not included in any of the previous studies. In addition, the latest version of HCCM, HC5 (Cribari-Neto, et al., 2007), is evaluated.
Application Of The Truncated Skew Laplace Probability Distribution In Maintenance System, Gokarna R. Aryal, Chris P. Tsokos
Application Of The Truncated Skew Laplace Probability Distribution In Maintenance System, Gokarna R. Aryal, Chris P. Tsokos
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A random variable X is said to have the skew-Laplace probability distribution if its pdf is given by f(x) = 2g(x)G(λx), where g (.) and G (.), respectively, denote the pdf and the cdf of the Laplace distribution. When the skew Laplace distribution is truncated on the left at 0 it is called it the truncated skew Laplace (TSL) distribution. This article provides a comparison of TSL distribution with twoparameter gamma model and the hypoexponential model, and an application of the subject model in maintenance system is studied.
Least Error Sample Distribution Function, Vassili F. Pastushenko
Least Error Sample Distribution Function, Vassili F. Pastushenko
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Email: The empirical distribution function (ecdf) is unbiased in the usual sense, but shows certain order bias. Pyke suggested discrete ecdf using expectations of order statistics. Piecewise constant optimal ecdf saves 200%/N of sample size N. Results are compared with linear interpolation for U(0, 1), which require up to sixfold shorter samples at the same accuracy.
Impact Of Rank-Based Normalizing Transformations On The Accuracy Of Test Scores, Shira R. Soloman, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Impact Of Rank-Based Normalizing Transformations On The Accuracy Of Test Scores, Shira R. Soloman, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The purpose of this article is to provide an empirical comparison of rank-based normalization methods for standardized test scores. A series of Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compare the Blom, Tukey, Van der Waerden and Rankit approximations in terms of achieving the T score’s specified mean and standard deviation and unit normal skewness and kurtosis. All four normalization methods were accurate on the mean but were variably inaccurate on the standard deviation. Overall, deviation from the target moments was pronounced for the even moments but slight for the odd moments. Rankit emerged as the most accurate method among all …
