Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Organisational Communication Assessment Using Frameworks From Cognitive Learning Theory And Authentic Assessment, Marilyn Mitchell

Marilyn Mitchell

This paper evaluates the learning aims and outcomes of a particular Organisational Communication assessment using frameworks from cognitive learning theory and authentic assessment. The assessment asks students to write a paper that describes and analyses the structure and culture of an organisation and makes recommendations for change using the research methods of interviews and observations. It is believed that the assessment develops students’ ability to represent organisational problems at a deeper level since they are researching the values and underlying assumptions upon which organisations operate. Further, it is believed that the students as a group are producing a higher quality …

Earning Their Way Out Of Poverty (Outline And Sample Chapter), Gary Fields

Gary S Fields

[Excerpt] According to the latest figures, today an estimated 3.1 billion people still live in absolute poverty, essentially all of them in the low- and middle-income countries of Asia, Latin America, and Africa and none of them in what are traditionally called the “developed economies” of North America (excluding Mexico), Western Europe, and selected parts of Asia and Oceania. This book is about how the poor live and work and what actions the world community could take to improve poor people’s earning opportunities as a central component of a multifaceted program aimed at ending the scourge of absolute economic misery.

A Brief Review Of The Literature On Earnings Mobility In Developing Countries, Gary Fields

Gary S Fields

[Excerpt] The literature on income and earnings mobility falls into three categories:

1. Macro mobility studies address the entire economy. They ask the question, how much income mobility and/or earnings mobility is there in the economy?
2. A second group of studies, micro mobility studies, examines patterns of income and earnings change over time for different individuals or groups. They ask the questions, which individuals or households experience movements of what magnitudes, and what are the correlates and determinants of these movements?
3. Within the micro mobility studies are a number of studies that look specifically at poverty dynamics …

Review: Making Religion, Making The State, Miri Kim Nov 2009

Review: Making Religion, Making The State, Miri Kim

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A collection of essays on the religious revival in the People’s Republic of China,Making Religion, Making the State (Stanford UP, 2009) focuses on how the state has influenced the development of Chinese religious institutions and practices. But, as the title suggests, the state’s rehabilitation of different religions has been far from a one-way street, with both clergy and laity prompting the state to adjust its strategies. The essays demonstrate just how complicated this process has been thus far, and suggest that the dynamics of the current religious revival will remain subject to change, albeit under the shadow of a state …

Analysis Of The Extent To Which State Insurance Laws Mandate Coverage And Payment Of Vaccines And Vaccine Administration Fees During Periods Of Declared Public Health Emergencies, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Nancy Lopez, Ross Margulies Nov 2009

Analysis Of The Extent To Which State Insurance Laws Mandate Coverage And Payment Of Vaccines And Vaccine Administration Fees During Periods Of Declared Public Health Emergencies, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Nancy Lopez, Ross Margulies

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This analysis examines whether state insurance laws require health insurers, as a condition of doing business, to pay the costs associated with the administration of immunizations during declared public health emergencies. As is the case with the current H1N1 emergency, a public health emergency triggers nationwide distribution of free vaccine. But even when vaccine is distributed free of charge, its administration poses costs to private physicians and charges can be significant. As a result, the Institute of Medicine has identified vaccine administration as a potential financial barrier to care. Most communities have limited numbers of public health workers and professional …

Achieving Sustainable, Compact Development In The Portland Metropolitan Area: New Tools And Approaches For Developing Centers And Corridors, Gil Kelley, Sheila A. Martin, Elizabeth Mylott

Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications

This report represents the work of a group of local public, private and institutional experts in real estate development and finance convened by the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies at Portland State University. This was done at the request of Metro, which wanted outside expert advice on ways to achieve more robust development of centers and corridors in the Portland metropolitan area, an important aspect of implementing the 2040 Growth Concept. Although the expert advisory group (EAG) enthusiastically took on this task, it wanted to first back up a step and deliberate over whether and to what extent center and …

Exploring The Motivations Of Base Jumpers: Extreme Sport Enthusiasts, Tara L. Allman, Robin D. Mittelstaedt, Bruce Martin, Marni Goldenberg Nov 2009

Exploring The Motivations Of Base Jumpers: Extreme Sport Enthusiasts, Tara L. Allman, Robin D. Mittelstaedt, Bruce Martin, Marni Goldenberg

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

Little previous research has been conducted exploring the motivational factors that influence a person's desire to participate in extreme sports. The researchers used a means-end approach (e.g. semi-structured interviews) to explore motivations for participation in the extreme sport of BASE jumping. BASE jumping is the activity of parachuting from bridges, buildings, antennas, and cliffs, in which participants have been identified as voluntary-risk takers. The results indicated that BASE jumpers deliberately took risks as a means of becoming positively transformed, which was essential to their quality of life. The study findings hold important implications for researchers interested in further studies of …

Tunneling Through Intercorporate Loans: The China Experience, Guohua Jiang, Charles M. C. Lee, Heng Yue

Research Collection School of Accountancy

This study investigates a particularly brazen form of corporate abuse, in which controlling shareholders use intercorporate loans to siphon billions of RMB from hundreds of Chinese listed companies during the 1996 to 2006 period. We document the nature and extent of these transactions, evaluate their economic consequences, examine factors that affect their cross-sectional severity, and report on the mitigating roles of auditors, institutional investors, and regulators. Collectively, our findings shed light on the severity of the minority shareholder expropriation problem in China, as well as the relative efficacy of various legal and extra-legal governance mechanisms in that country.

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon

Presentations

College students today flock to Wikipedia in droves, while at the same time academic libraries continue to pour time and money into print reference collections that are rarely used and take huge amounts of our libraries’ limited space. While libraries have responded to space and access concerns by turning to electronic books, title-by-title selection is a time-consuming affair for a collection that sees low use. In this session we will examine the factors that have led to the point where libraries need to reexamine how they collect and provide access to reference sources. Through a content analysis of reference transcripts …

A Functionalist Perspective On Social Anxiety And Avoidant Personality Disorder, Peter J. Lafreniere Nov 2009

A Functionalist Perspective On Social Anxiety And Avoidant Personality Disorder, Peter J. Lafreniere

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

A developmental-evolutionary perspective is used to synthesize basic research from the neurosciences, ethology, genetics, and developmental psychology into a unified framework for understanding the nature and origins of social anxiety and avoidant personality disorder. Evidence is presented that social anxiety disorder (social phobia) and avoidant personality disorder may be alternate conceptualizations of the same disorder because they have virtually the same symptoms and genetic basis, and respond to the same pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions. A functionalist perspective on social anxiety is formulated to (a) explain the origins of normative states of anxiety, (b) outline developmental pathways in the transition from …

Biochemistry Collection Development Policy, Jacquelyn Petzold Nov 2009

Biochemistry Collection Development Policy, Jacquelyn Petzold

UNL Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The biochemistry collection exists to support the teaching, research, and service endeavors of the Department of Biochemistry and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community. The public may benefit from the biological sciences collection, although specific materials are not collected to meet their needs. Biochemistry-related materials not available in the library’s collection are generally readily available through Interlibrary Loan. The collection is focused on the QD Library of Congress call number range, although the heavily interdisciplinary nature of scientific study necessitates some overlap with the rest of Q, R, S, T, and other areas.
