Competent And Likeable? Protecting And Promoting Women’S Likeability In Employment Negotiations, Mara Olekalns, Carol Kulik Dec 2008

Competent And Likeable? Protecting And Promoting Women’S Likeability In Employment Negotiations, Mara Olekalns, Carol Kulik

Mara Olekalns

Professional women earn less than their male counterparts and this salary gap largely results from the ways men and women negotiate employment terms. We integrate the Stereotype Content Model and Expectancy Violation Theory to explain why traditional “best practice” negotiation behaviors benefit male negotiators but backfire for female negotiators. Gender counter-normative behaviors create negative expectancy violations for women, generating cognitive and emotional backlash from their negotiation partners. We use this theoretical integration to identify alternative strategies that female employees and their employers can use to avoid negative expectancy violations and ensure that women are not disadvantaged in workplace negotiations.

Beyond The Language-Literature Divide: Advanced Pedagogy For Training Graduate Students, Heather W. Allen Dec 2008

Beyond The Language-Literature Divide: Advanced Pedagogy For Training Graduate Students, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

In this article, my objectives are 1) to discuss current practices and challenges related to the professional development of graduate students in foreign language departments as teachers; and 2) to provide a rationale for and description of a graduate seminar that serves to prepare future professors to develop students' analytical, critical, and argumentative capacities in the advanced undergraduate curriculum. It is my hope to encourage further discussion of integrative approaches to teaching foreign language at all levels by providing a concrete example of how graduate student professional development can include issues of language in advanced courses. A one-semester advanced foreign …

In Search Of Relevance: The Role Of The Standards In The Undergraduate Foreign Language Curriculum, Heather W. Allen Dec 2008

In Search Of Relevance: The Role Of The Standards In The Undergraduate Foreign Language Curriculum, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

Beyond the Standards' influence on K-12 language education policy and continued discussions of their relevance and application to FL instruction and assessment, in university-level FL departments the tangible impacts of the Standards in shaping curriculum and classroom instruction have not been wide-ranging. This chapter identifies and discusses three factors that have contributed to the reception of the Standards in higher education in general terms and, more specifically, in terms of the advanced undergraduate FL curriculum. Based on the discussion of these three factors, I respond to the question of whether the Standards provide a framework adequate in addressing the critical …

Determinants Of Loan Repayment Performance In Microcredit Institutions: Evidence From Tanzania, Abel A. Kinyondo, Nathan Okurut Dec 2008

Determinants Of Loan Repayment Performance In Microcredit Institutions: Evidence From Tanzania, Abel A. Kinyondo, Nathan Okurut

Abel Alfred Kinyondo

This study investigated the key factors that influence loan repayment performance among group clients of microcredit institutions (MFIs) in Tanzania. This was motivated by the fact that sustainability of MFIs is critical for poverty reduction among the poor through sustainable access to credit. Sustainability of microcredit institutions is greatly influenced by the loan repayment performance of their clients. High repayment rates enable MFIs to recover interest income and minimize loan losses which enhance profits. In turn, these profits enhance the capital base which enables microcredit institutions to increase their outreach and reduce their dependence on donors. The study was based …

Presidential Control Over The Regulatory Affairs Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Jennifer Allison Dec 2008

Presidential Control Over The Regulatory Affairs Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Jennifer Allison

Jennifer Allison

This paper outlines the historical exertion of presidential control over the regulatory affairs of federal agencies. It first examines the historical understanding of the constitutionality of examining such control. Then, it describes the two main methods that modern Presidents use to exercise such control: presidential directives and presidential regulatory approval regimes. Finally, it discusses how this has manifested itself during the early days of the Obama administration, exploring the regulatory effects of President Obama's executive order that directed agencies to expand funding programs for research using embryonic stem cells.

One Size Does Not Fit All: A Framework For Tailoring Intellectual Property Rights, Michael W. Carroll Dec 2008

One Size Does Not Fit All: A Framework For Tailoring Intellectual Property Rights, Michael W. Carroll

Michael W. Carroll

The United States and its trading partners have adopted cultural and innovation policies under which the government grants one-size-fits-all patents and copyrights to inventors and authors. On a global basis, the reasons for doing so vary, but in the United States granting intellectual property rights has been justified as the principal means of promoting innovation and cultural progress. Until recently, however, few have questioned the wisdom of using such blunt policy instruments to promote progress in a wide range of industries in which the economics of innovation varies considerably.

Provisionally accepting the assumptions of the traditional economic case for intellectual …

Drafting Nepal's Language Policy, Sujit Choudhry Dec 2008

Drafting Nepal's Language Policy, Sujit Choudhry

Sujit Choudhry

Language will be one of the most important issues for the writers of Nepal’s new constitution. In grappling with it, there are in fact two sets of questions for Nepal to discuss. First, what does official language status actually mean? Second, how can constitutional design respond to linguistic diversity—in particular, what is the relationship between official language policies and federalism? This article explores these issues.

Repaying Favours: Unravelling The Nature Of Community Exchnage In An English Locality, Colin C. Williams Dec 2008

Repaying Favours: Unravelling The Nature Of Community Exchnage In An English Locality, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

A recurring assumption in community development has been that when material support is provided on a one-to-one basis to the extended family or social and neighbourhood networks, such favours are repaid by offering help in return rather than money. Reporting a study of the community exchanges of 120 households in an English locality, however, the finding is that well over one-third of these were repaid using money. The outcome is a call for the community development literature to recognise and respond to the existence of this sphere of ‘paid favours’ which demonstrates how monetary transactions can be neither market-like nor …
