Valuing Beach Closures On The Padre Island National Seashore, George R. Parsons, Ami K. Kang, Christopher G. Leggett, Kevin J. Boyle Dec 2008

Valuing Beach Closures On The Padre Island National Seashore, George R. Parsons, Ami K. Kang, Christopher G. Leggett, Kevin J. Boyle

George Parsons

We estimate the economic loss due to hypothetical beach closures on the Padre Island National Seashore on the Gulf Coast of Texas. We consider the closure of the entire park, groups of beaches in the park, and for comparison, beaches elsewhere on the coast. We estimate a linked site choice/trip frequency model of day trips. The site choice model is estimated using multinomial and mixed logit. The trip frequency model is estimated using a negative binomial regression. Using the mixed logit model, the mean per-trip loss for the closure of all Padre beaches is about $20; the loss-to-trip ratio is …

Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling Of The Influences Of Family-Centered Care On Parent And Child Psychological Health, Carl J. Dunst, Carol M. Trivette Dec 2008

Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling Of The Influences Of Family-Centered Care On Parent And Child Psychological Health, Carl J. Dunst, Carol M. Trivette

Carol M. Trivette

Background. Family-centered care is now practiced throughout the world by physicians, nurses, and allied health care professionals. The call for adoption of family-centered care is based on the contention that the physical and psychological health of a child is influenced by parents’ psychological health where family-centered care enhances parent well-being which in turn influences child well-being. We empirically assessed whether these relationships are supported by available evidence.
Method. Meta-analytic structural equation modeling was used to test the direct and indirect influences of family-centered care and self-efficacy beliefs on parent and child psychological health. Data from more than 2900 parents and …

An Assessment Of Treatment Integrity In Behavioral Intervention Studies Conducted With Persons With Mental Retardation, John J. Wheeler, Michael R. Mayton, Stacy L. Carter, Anthony L. Menendez, Ann Huang Dec 2008

An Assessment Of Treatment Integrity In Behavioral Intervention Studies Conducted With Persons With Mental Retardation, John J. Wheeler, Michael R. Mayton, Stacy L. Carter, Anthony L. Menendez, Ann Huang

John J. Wheeler

The purpose of this study was to assess the degree to which behavioral intervention studies conducted with persons with mental retardation operationally defined the independent variables and evaluated and reported measures of treatment integrity. The study expands the previous work in this area reported by Gresham, Gansle, and Noell (1993) and Wheeler, Baggett, Fox, and Blevins (2006) by providing an evaluation of empirical investigations published in multiple journals in the fields of applied behavior analysis and mental retardation from 1996 –2006. Results of the review indicated that relatively few of the studies fully reported data on treatment integrity.

Aerobic Fitness And Cognitive Development: Event-Related Brain Potential And Task Performance Indices Of Executive Control In Preadolescent Children, Jason R. Themanson, Charles H. Hillman, Sarah M. Buck, Matthew B. Pontifex, Darla M. Castelli Dec 2008

Aerobic Fitness And Cognitive Development: Event-Related Brain Potential And Task Performance Indices Of Executive Control In Preadolescent Children, Jason R. Themanson, Charles H. Hillman, Sarah M. Buck, Matthew B. Pontifex, Darla M. Castelli

Jason R. Themanson, Ph.D

The relationship between aerobic fitness and executive control was assessed in 38 higher- and lower-fit children (Mage = 9.4 years), grouped according to their performance on a field test of aerobic capacity. Participants performed a flanker task requiring variable amounts of executive control while event-related brain potential responses and task performance were assessed. Results indicated that higher-fit children performed more accurately across conditions of the flanker task and following commission errors when compared to lower-fit children, whereas no group differences were observed for reaction time. Neuroelectric data indicated that P3 amplitude was larger for higher- compared to lower-fit children …

Urban Nightlife, Social Capital, And The Public Life Of Cities, David Grazian Dec 2008

Urban Nightlife, Social Capital, And The Public Life Of Cities, David Grazian

David Grazian

Sociologists and urban scholars emphasize how nightlife establishments contribute to the social capital and public life of cities. In the interests of tempering this line of argument, I suggest three generalizable empirical findings that provide grounds for skepticism on this score: (1) the racial and class barriers to participation imposed by urban nightlife enterprises; (2) the normalization of gender differences and the routine harassment of women within such scenes; and (3) the lack of inclusiveness surrounding local nightlife in urban neighborhood communities. These findings suggest that nightlife scenes may function more efficiently as generators of bonding rather than bridging social …

Internet Scallywags: A Comparative Analysis Of Multiple Forms And Measurements Of Digital Piracy, Whitney Decamp Dec 2008

Internet Scallywags: A Comparative Analysis Of Multiple Forms And Measurements Of Digital Piracy, Whitney Decamp

Whitney DeCamp

Internet-based digital piracy has recently become a widespread occurrence. Despite this growth, few studies have attempted to apply criminological theory to the crime. This study tests the explanatory power of two criminological theories, general deterrence and differential association, on Internet piracy of music, software and movie. Data used in this study were collected from 541 undergraduate college students from a mid-Atlantic university. Separate models were estimated for willingness to and involvement in digital piracy. The results show that variables derived from differential association theory, such as peer activity and parental support, as well as several control variables including gender, connection …

Natural Resource Endowments And The Domestic Revenue Effort, John Thornton, Fabian Bornhorst, Sanjeev Gupta Dec 2008

Natural Resource Endowments And The Domestic Revenue Effort, John Thornton, Fabian Bornhorst, Sanjeev Gupta

John Thornton

We examine whether there is evidence of an offset between government revenues from hydrocarbon (oil and gas) related activities and revenues from other domestic sources in a panel of 30 hydrocarbon producing countries. Our main finding is that there is an offset of about 20%, which is robust to the inclusion of control variables, the exclusion of outliers, and alternate estimation methodologies. While the impact of the offset on long-term development prospects is not clear, there is a risk of significant adjustment costs in moving to a higher level of domestic taxation once natural resources are depleted.

Determined To Succeed: Salient Factors That Foster Academic Success For Academically Unprepared Black Males At A Black College, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Estelle M. Young, Phd Dec 2008

Determined To Succeed: Salient Factors That Foster Academic Success For Academically Unprepared Black Males At A Black College, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Estelle M. Young, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Attrition for Black men is a serious problem in higher education. While researchers have explored factors of retention for Black men attending historically White institutions (HWIs), less research explains factors underlying the success of Black men attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), particularly those men who are academically unprepared. Eleven Black men, who entered a public, urban HBCU through its pre-college program and persisted to graduation, provided a retrospective view of factors promoting their success. The result from this study may help universities enhance retention for Black men by understanding salient variables in their academic achievement and retention.

Exploring Challenges That Threaten To Impede The Academic Success Of Academically Underprepared Black Males At An Hbcu, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Adriel A. Hilton, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Historically, education has played a central role in the lives of Blacks. Although Blacks continue their penchant for education, Black males have not fared as well in the educational pipeline. Data for this study emerged from a qualitative investigation of factors that promote success for academically underprepared Black males at a historically Black college and university (HBCU). Although all of the participants persisted to graduation, the participants discussed challenges that threatened to impede their academic success. This article discusses those challenges and outlines recommendations for the ways in which colleges and universities can work more effectively toward preventing attrition for …

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison Dec 2008

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison

Doug Way

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of resources used in …

Attribution Theory And Healthcare Culture: Translational Management Science Contributes A Framework To Identify The Etiology Of Punitive Clinical Environments, Patrick Albert Palmieri Dec 2008

Attribution Theory And Healthcare Culture: Translational Management Science Contributes A Framework To Identify The Etiology Of Punitive Clinical Environments, Patrick Albert Palmieri

Patrick Albert Palmieri

The Institute of Medicine’s seminal report, To err is human: Building a safer health system, established the national patient safety framework and initiated interest in changing the traditionally punitive healthcare culture. This paper reviews a multidisciplinary literature and offers an attribution framework to explicate the organizational processes that contribute to an industry-wide culture where clinicians are routinely blamed for adverse patient events. Attribution theory is concerned with the manner in which people explain the behaviors of others or themselves by assigning causality for events. To date, attribution theory, though well established in the management literature, has yet to be translated …

The Validity And Clinical Utility Of Night Eating Syndrome, Ruth Striegel Weissman Dec 2008

The Validity And Clinical Utility Of Night Eating Syndrome, Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Objective: To review the empirical literature for evidence in support of inclusion of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Method: Based on a literature search using PubMed, 47 empirical studies of NES were identified. Results: The literature reflects use of varying definitions; progress has been made toward reliable measurement of night eating symptoms; evidence regarding a differentiation of NES from “normalcy” or from other eating disorders is based largely on samples of convenience; only one controlled treatment study has been published. Discussion: There are limited data supporting the clinical …

Re-Producing Citizens: Gender, Employment, And Work-Family Balance Policies In Singapore, Shirley Hsiao-Li Sun Dec 2008

Re-Producing Citizens: Gender, Employment, And Work-Family Balance Policies In Singapore, Shirley Hsiao-Li Sun

Shirley SUN

In this article, I explore the effectiveness of state work-family balance policies in shaping individual reproductive decisions in Singapore, the city-state that ranked third in the Global Competitiveness Report 2009–2010 (World Economic Forum, 2009). I draw on in-depth data from interviews with women of childbearing years, as well as data from focus group discussions with women and their peers, spouses, prospective spouses, and parents. Major findings suggest that to be effective, the state’s work-family balance policy measures have to recognize citizens’ diverse life plans as well as the attendant requests for certain state benefits and workplace rights— such as expanding …

Ripe Standing Vines And The Jurisprudential Tasting Of Matured Legal Wines – And Law & Bananas: Property And Public Choice In The Permitting Process, Donald J. Kochan Dec 2008

Ripe Standing Vines And The Jurisprudential Tasting Of Matured Legal Wines – And Law & Bananas: Property And Public Choice In The Permitting Process, Donald J. Kochan

Donald J. Kochan

From produce to wine, we only consume things when they are ready. The courts are no different. That concept of “readiness” is how courts address cases and controversies as well. Justiciability doctrines, particularly ripeness, have a particularly important role in takings challenges to permitting decisions. The courts largely hold that a single permit denial does not give them enough information to evaluate whether the denial is in violation of law. As a result of this jurisprudential reality, regulators with discretion have an incentive to use their power to extract rents from those that need their permission. Non-justiciability of permit denials …

Give Peace A Channel: Launching An International Satellite Tv Channel For Conflict Resolution Dialogue., Tatsushi Arai Dec 2008

Give Peace A Channel: Launching An International Satellite Tv Channel For Conflict Resolution Dialogue., Tatsushi Arai

Tatsushi Arai

This is a call for concerted action to establish and institutionalize an international television channel for conflict resolution through which individuals and communities divided by social conflict can be brought together for face-to-face dialogue, in order to overcome geographic distances, prohibitively high travel costs, and inhospitable political realities that have kept them apart. The author's experience in co-facilitating dialogues that sought to connect the United States with the Middle East is discussed.

Expression Of Cultural Standing In Miami: Cuban Spanish Discourse About Fidel Castro And Cuba, Andrew Lynch Dec 2008

Expression Of Cultural Standing In Miami: Cuban Spanish Discourse About Fidel Castro And Cuba, Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch

This study draws upon Claudia Strauss’ (2004) model of cultural standing to analyze opinions regarding Fidel Castro and US-Cuba relations among three major groups of Miami Cubans, identified according to their time of immigration: early 1960s exiles, ‘Marielitos’ and their children (1980 exiles), and the younger generation (Miami-born grandchildren of 1960s exiles). I argue that the discourse features used to convey differing ideological stances on sending aid to Cuba or visiting the Island are reflective of two rather distinct ‘opinion communities’ in Cuban Miami. To that end, I explore the relationship between processes of simplification in the Spanish verb system …

A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Final /S/ In Miami Cuban Spanish, Andrew Lynch Dec 2008

A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Final /S/ In Miami Cuban Spanish, Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch

This study analyzes the variation of syllable- and word-final /s/ among two generations of Cubans in Miami, Florida (USA): older, early exile immigrants who arrived in Miami as adults in the 1960s and 1970s, and young Miami-born Cubans whose maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated to Miami from Cuba prior to 1980. Since sibilant weakening is generally considered to be an ongoing language change in Caribbean Spanish, it was hypothesized that the young generation of English-dominant bilinguals would present with much higher rates of aspiration and deletion, in keeping with Carmen Silva-Corvalán’s (1994) hypothesis that linguistic changes are accelerated in situations …

Pursuing The Good Life: American Narratives Of Travel And A Search For Refuge, Brian A. Hoey Dec 2008

Pursuing The Good Life: American Narratives Of Travel And A Search For Refuge, Brian A. Hoey

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

September 11th 2001 helped create a sense of ever-present risk for many Americans. At the same time, highly publicized abuses of corporate power and financial meltdowns in former Wall Street gems like Enron and WorldCom together with more recent economic trouble in the U.S. housing market heighten uncertainties. Although these events have hastened personal experience of insecurity across all socioeconomic levels, even in the dotcom glory days many middle-class families rightly sensed a threatening undercurrent of change. Although unsettling, global economic restructuring begun in the 1970s fueled stratospheric growth in the 90s as corporations embraced “flexibility.” On an individual level, …

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist Dec 2008

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist

Karl Widerquist

The global recession has been spreading and deepening for nearly a year. It could become the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and it has captured nearly all of the attention we, our media, and our leaders pay to economic issues. Perhaps we’re paying too much attention to it. I want to convince you in this editorial that a recession—even a major depression—is not an economic problem of the first magnitude. Our most pressing economic problems are distribution, and they exist whether we are in recession or not. Recessions appear to be a major problem primarily because …

The Basic Income Guarantee And The Goals Of Equality, Efficiency, And Environmentalism, Karl Widerquist, Michael A. Lewis Dec 2008

The Basic Income Guarantee And The Goals Of Equality, Efficiency, And Environmentalism, Karl Widerquist, Michael A. Lewis

Karl Widerquist

The most important issue in equality – if not in all economic policy – is the persistence of poverty. This chapter argues that anti-poverty policy needs to move away from the categorical approach towards universalism, specifically in the form of a Basic Income Guarantee. This chapter argues that the Basic Income Guarantee, in any of its various versions is the most efficient and comprehensive method to attack poverty. It can also be used as part of a strategy for environmental protection.
