Children As Victims, Children As Clients Towards A Framework Of Best Practice In Services For Children Who Experience Domestic Violence, Emma Byrne-Macnamee Sep 2009

Children As Victims, Children As Clients Towards A Framework Of Best Practice In Services For Children Who Experience Domestic Violence, Emma Byrne-Macnamee

Dissertations

Historically, the core focus of domestic violence services in Ireland and elsewhere has been to support and empower women. Children’s needs have been seen as secondary to their mothers’, although services have generally provided opportunities for play and recreation. An increasing recognition of the direct effects of family violence on children and a growing trend in child and family provision towards monitoring progress and identifying outcomes has created a necessity for services working with children who experience domestic violence to examine and appraise the nature and scope of their work. Within this context, this study describes existing provision for children …

A Few Pointers From Veteran News Editors, Sue Burzynski Bullard Sep 2009

A Few Pointers From Veteran News Editors, Sue Burzynski Bullard

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Copy editors should stick this reminder on their computer screens: Never assume, never be timid. Editing requires an aggressive approach to stories because the copy desk is the last line of defense against factual errors, bad grammar, libel and simply having the newspaper look stupid. Common rookie errors include making assumptions and being too timid, say copy desk chiefs and veteran editors.

The Geopolitics Of Amazônia In Souza's Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee Sep 2009

The Geopolitics Of Amazônia In Souza's Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Geopolitics of Amazônia in Souza's Fiction" Thomas O. Beebee examines the ways in which the historical fiction of Brazilian author Márcio Souza (1946-) confronts prevailing notions of Brazilianness conceived as the unity of citizens within a fixed territorial space. Souza undermines this notion by frequently using non-Brazilians as protagonists of his novels that have as their theme the struggle over control of territory "within" Brazil. Beebee reviews the role played by the concept of national territorial control in theories of nationalism and the modern state, including in the Brazilian school of geopolitics developed by Eduardo Backheuser …

Guimarães Rosa's "São Marcos" And Race And Class, Paulo Da-Luz-Moreira Sep 2009

Guimarães Rosa's "São Marcos" And Race And Class, Paulo Da-Luz-Moreira

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Guimarães Rosa's 'São Marcos' and Race and Class" Paulo da-Luz-Moreira analyzes a pivotal short story in João Guimarães Rosa's oeuvre. Published in Sagarana, Guimarães Rosa's first short fiction collection, "São Marcos" has an extremely complex structure in its juxtaposition of layers of idiosyncratic and careful ethnographic and literary erudition, making the story a challenge to critics and readers alike. Guimarães Rosa worked exhaustively on this unique piece that touches with disconcerting openness on issues of strained racial and class relations in Brazil and expounds on the power of language and on the delicate point upon which one's …

The Use Of Personality Test Norms In Work Settings: Effects Of Sample Size And Relevance, Robert P. Tett, Jenna R. (Fitzke) Pieper, Patrick L. Wadlington, Scott A. Davies, Michael G. Anderson, Jeff Foster Sep 2009

The Use Of Personality Test Norms In Work Settings: Effects Of Sample Size And Relevance, Robert P. Tett, Jenna R. (Fitzke) Pieper, Patrick L. Wadlington, Scott A. Davies, Michael G. Anderson, Jeff Foster

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The value of personality test norms for use in work settings depends on norm sample size (N) and relevance, yet research on these criteria is scant and corresponding standards are vague. Using basic statistical principles and Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) data from 5 sales and 4 trucking samples (N range = 394–6,200), we show that (a) N >100 has little practical impact on the reliability of norm-based standard scores (max=±10 percentile points in 99% of samples) and (b) personality profiles vary more from using different norm samples, between as well as within job families. Averaging across scales, T-scores based on …

Approaches To Qualitative Research: Theory And Its Practical Application (A Guide For Dissertation Students), John Hogan, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

Qualitative research is a multifaceted approach that investigates culture, society and behaviour through an analysis and synthesis of people’s words and actions. Qualitative methods produce compelling knowledge of how and why people behave as they do, whether in organisational, family, personal, or other social roles.

The primary objective of this book is to introduce students to the concepts underlying qualitative research and how this kind of research can be conducted in a practical manner. To this end, it discusses various approaches to qualitative research and provides examples of these approaches being carried out in practice. In doing so, the book …

Housing And The Financial Crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures, Michael E. Stone Sep 2009

Housing And The Financial Crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures, Michael E. Stone

Community Studies Faculty Publication Series

Thls paper explains the central role of housing in the financial crisis. It demonstrates the interaction among five categories of problems in precipitating the crisis: wide and widening inequality; persistent and pervasive racism in the provision of housing; treating housing as a speculative commodity; overdependence of housing on debt; public policies that have exacerbated the other factors. It concludes with proposals for a set of fundamental structural change in the systems of housing ownership and finance

Possible Macroeconomic Consequences Of Large Future Federal Government Deficits, Ray C. Fair Sep 2009

Possible Macroeconomic Consequences Of Large Future Federal Government Deficits, Ray C. Fair

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper uses a multicountry macroeconometric model to analyze possible macroeconomic consequences of large future U.S. federal government deficits. The analysis has the advantage of accounting for the endogeneity of the deficit. In the baseline run, which assumes no large tax increases or spending cuts and no bad dollar and stock market shocks, the debt/GDP ratio rises substantially through 2020. The estimates from this run are in line with other estimates. Various experiments off the baseline run are then done. If the dollar depreciates, inflation increases but the effect on the debt/GDP ratio is modest. It does not appear that …

Incentives For Experimenting Agents, Johannes Hörner, Larry Samuelson Sep 2009

Incentives For Experimenting Agents, Johannes Hörner, Larry Samuelson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine a repeated interaction between an agent, who undertakes experiments, and a principal who provides the requisite funding for these experiments. The agent’s actions are hidden, and the principal, who makes the offers, cannot commit to future actions. We identify the unique Markovian equilibrium (whose structure depends on the parameters) and characterize the set of all equilibrium payoffs, uncovering a collection of non-Markovian equilibria that can Pareto dominate and reverse the qualitative properties of the Markovian equilibrium. The prospect of lucrative continuation payoffs makes it more expensive for the principal to incentivize the agent, giving rise to a dynamic …

The Future Of The Oecd, Richard Woodward Sep 2009

The Future Of The Oecd, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is one of the least written about and least understood of our major global institutions. This new book builds a well-rounded understanding of this crucial, though often neglected, institution, with a range of clearly written chapters that:

      • outline its origins and evolution, bringing its story fully up-to-date
      • present a clear framework for understanding the OECD
      • set the institution within the broader context of global governance
      • outline key criticisms and debates
      • evaluate its future prospects.

Given the immense challenges facing humanity at the start of the 21st century, the need for the OECD …

The Built Environment, Neighborhood Safety, And Physical Activity Among Low Income Children, Jessica Greene, Debbie Daniel Sep 2009

The Built Environment, Neighborhood Safety, And Physical Activity Among Low Income Children, Jessica Greene, Debbie Daniel

TREC Final Reports

There is a growing body of evidence that environmental factors are related to physical activity and active modes of transportation. There is a separate body of research that links neighborhood safety to physical activity. This study used a cross sectional telephone survey of 801 parents/guardians of low income children in Florida to bridge these literatures and examine the independent relationship of the built environment and neighborhood safety on childrens' physical activity.

In multivariate regression models we find that neighborhood safety is a more consistent predictor of low income childrens' physical activity. In neighborhoods where parents reported that there was a …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Letter responding to an article predicting the phaseout of government information librarians in a survey of Association of Research Library (ARL) Directors. We criticize this conclusion maintaining that the multifaceted and interdisciplinary nature of government information makes it more critical that libraries users needing government information resources need to have highly trained and specializing librarians with extensive knowledge of these resources assisting them.

Counting On Care Work: Human Infrastructure In Massachusetts, Randy Albelda, Mignon Duffy, Nancy Folbre

Center for Social Policy Publications

In Massachusetts, as in every other place in the world, all children need to be cared for and educated, everybody has physical and mental health needs that require attention, and some individuals need assistance with the daily tasks of life because of illness, age, or disability. The labor of meeting these needs – which we call care work – is a complex activity that has profound implications for personal, social and economic well-being. Care work is not just a cornerstone of our economy – it is a rock-bottom foundation. Care work provides the basis for our human infrastructure, and we …
