Lost And Found : Resilience Approaches That Helped The Vietnamese Residents Of Biloxi, Mississippi In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, Bao Chau Van
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Vietnamese American residents of Biloxi, Mississippi were impacted heavily by Hurricane Katrina; many are still recovering from the losses caused by the storm. Stories in the news media and academia have discussed the strengths and resilience in the Vietnamese communities post Hurricane Katrina. However, no authors discuss in detail the resilience factors that helped the survivors. The purpose of this study is to use post-Hurricane Katrina as an exemplar to understand the experience of the Vietnamese community in Biloxi, Mississippi. The researcher intended to explore the protective factors that survivors use to help rebuild their lives. The study used existing …
How Social Workers Resolve The Ethical Dilemmas That Arise When Working With Women Experiencing Domestic Violence, Jennifer F. Wiech
How Social Workers Resolve The Ethical Dilemmas That Arise When Working With Women Experiencing Domestic Violence, Jennifer F. Wiech
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Though social workers come in contact with victims of domestic violence in a number of ways, studies indicate that social workers report feeling underprepared by their graduate education to address issues of domestic violence (DV). In an effort to reveal what is preventing social workers from taking a more demonstrative position on this issue, two focus groups comprised of 5 to 8 Master's level social workers were conducted to explore what resources aid in resolving ethical dilemmas, as well as the following ethical issues: upholding a client's right to self-determination, a clinician's duty to warn/duty to protect, mandatory reporting of …

An Exploration Of White Mental Health Clinicians' Provision Of Spanish Language Services To Latino/A Clients, Sara Esther Walker
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored White mental health clinicians' provision of services in Spanish to Latino/a clients through exploratory interviews with thirteen clinicians. Participants were asked about their identities as White Spanish speakers and their motivations to provide services in Spanish. They were asked how clients, colleagues, and supervisors respond to them as White Spanish speakers. Challenging aspects of their work were explored, as were any instances in which they felt advantaged by their White identities. Finally, participants were asked about differences in the quality of care that they offer in English versus Spanish, and additional support or training that would help …

Managing A Nation's Image During Crisis: A Study Of The Chinese Government's Image Repair Efforts In The “Made In China” Controversy, Peijuan Cai, Lee Pei Ting, Augustine Pang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The image of a nation is crucial in the conduct of international relations (Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). A favorable image plays a critical role in asserting one's influence (Benoit, W. L., & Brinson, S. L. (1994). AT&T: “Apologies are not enough”. Communication Quarterly, 42, 75–88; Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). Often, strategic communication tools like public relations and media diplomacy are used to enhance a nation's image …

Testing Structural Change In Conditional Distributions Via Quantile Regressions, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao
Testing Structural Change In Conditional Distributions Via Quantile Regressions, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao
Research Collection School Of Economics
We propose tests for structural change in conditional distributions via quantile regressions. To avoid misspecification on the conditioning relationship, we construct the tests based on the residuals from local polynomial quantile regressions. In particular, the tests are based upon the cumulative sums of generalized residuals from quantile regressions and have power against local alternatives at rate n−1/2. We derive the limiting distributions for our tests under the null hypothesis of no structural change and a sequence of local alternatives. The proposed tests apply to a wide range of dynamic models, including time series regressions with m.d.s. errors, as well as …
One Cheer For Constantinople: A Comment On Pettit And Skinner On Hobbes And Freedom, Chandran Kukathas
One Cheer For Constantinople: A Comment On Pettit And Skinner On Hobbes And Freedom, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Philip Pettit and Quentin Skinner find Hobbes's understanding of freedom as non-interference inadequate because it fails to appreciate what is wrong with a life lived as a slave. Though their critiques have some force, however, Hobbes's view of freedom has virtues of its own. It is highly sensitive to the fact that freedom is a matter of degree. It is also unlikely to mistake freedom for something else, like security or dignity. Moreover, Hobbes is not as unmindful of the dangers of servility as many think.

Yellowstone National Park Visitors: A Seasonal Analysis, Christine Oschell
Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
This report is part of a series that examines visitors in gateway communities of both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks with the purpose of understanding the lifestyle, habits, values, demographics and travel characteristics of visitors to the parks. This report details only the results of Yellowstone visitors and presents the results by the season in which the visitors were intercepted (spring, summer and fall, 2008). The findings suggest that visitors to Yellowstone do not differ significantly, regardless of season of visitation, in their lifestyles, habits, preferred experiences or values.
Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli
Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli
The Qualitative Report
This study describes the analysis of the social studies autobiographies of 46 students compiled over a 15 month period. Two major questions were addressed: (1) what motivational patterns are revealed in these autobiographies and (2) what differences and similarities exist in the autobiographies of students seeking alternative and traditional certification. Both groups noted the influence of family and other significant adults, and the influence of social studies teachers, both K-12 and postsecondary, in their decisions to pursue social studies teaching careers. There were more similarities than differences between the two groups. The autobiographies echoed influences that are found in the …

Drama: A Comparative Analysis Of Individual Narratives, Susanna Belle Spaulding, James Banning, Clifford P. Harbour, Timothy Gray Davies
The Qualitative Report
In a narrative inquiry, five educators who taught college in prison share stories about working in this non-traditional learning environment that is often dangerous and frustrating. From the tension between the prison's emphasis on social control and the educators' concern for democratic classrooms, three broad themes emerged: working in borderlands, negotiating power relations, and making personal transformations. Large intact segments from transcripts of participant interviews form a dramatic text that illuminates how a selected group of educators made meaning of their experience teaching college courses to incarcerated students. A comparative analysis presented in a one act play brings together the …
Accessibility Of Bay Area Rail Transit Stations: An Evaluation Of Opportunities For Transit Oriented Development, Kevin M. Fang
Accessibility Of Bay Area Rail Transit Stations: An Evaluation Of Opportunities For Transit Oriented Development, Kevin M. Fang
Master's Theses
Many groups have been pushing for a shift from automotive oriented transportation and land use, to transit-oriented transportation and land use. These groups have many valid reasons. However, just as it is fair to point out issues about auto travel, so too is it fair to see how transit performs at meeting certain goals. This paper examines the important characteristic of accessibility afforded to travelers. This is quantified through the calculation of accessibility indexes for stations, for the specific case of two existing rail systems and four proposed rail extensions in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As a whole, the …

Evaluation Of Short Duration Unscheduled Absences Among Transit Operators: Trimet Case Study, James G. Strathman, Joseph Broach, Steve Callas
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
This report analyzes factors contributing to short duration (one to three days) unscheduled absences among operators at TriMet, the transit provider for the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region. The analysis draws on a wide array of operator-specific information recovered by transit ITS technologies in combination with information from the agency’s human resources, scheduling, incident, and customer relations databases. The likelihood of an absence is estimated in relation to personal characteristics, employment status, aspects of assigned work, service delivery and performance indicators, temporal factors, and customer feedback. The findings can be used directly to support extraboard planning practices. More generally, the findings …
The Development Of Possibility Judgment Within And Across Domains, Andrew Shtulman
The Development Of Possibility Judgment Within And Across Domains, Andrew Shtulman
Andrew Shtulman
The ability to differentiate possible events from impossible ones is an invaluable skill when reasoning about claims that transcend the perceptual evidence at hand, yet preschool-aged children do not readily make this differentiation when reasoning about physically extraordinary events [Shtulman, A., & Carey, S. (2007). Improbable or impossible? How children reason about the possibility of extraordinary claims. Child Development, 78, 1015–1032]. The present study sought to determine whether this failure stems from deficits in domain-specific knowledge or deficits in the domain-general procedure by which possibility judgments are made. Participants (48 children aged 4-9 years olds and 16 adults) were asked …

Advancing Disciplinary Practice Through Critical Thinking: A Rejoinder To Bensley, Stephen Yanchar, Brent Slife, Russell Warne
Advancing Disciplinary Practice Through Critical Thinking: A Rejoinder To Bensley, Stephen Yanchar, Brent Slife, Russell Warne
Russell T Warne
The authors respond to Bensley’s (2009) comment on their alternative formulation of critical thinking in psychology (Yanchar, Slife, & Warne, 2008). They argue that Bensley’s defense of the traditional critical thinking approach—which they term scientific analytic reasoning (SAR)—fails to address their main objections to SAR and their reasons for presenting an alternative. In particular, the openness, fairness, and generativity that Bensley references as strengths of SAR are themselves informed by scientific analytic assumptions and values, which, they argue, illustrates their original contention—that SAR offers an insular and insufficiently critical approach to critical thinking. The authors conclude by calling for future …

Transplants of donated stem cells save the lives of many patients with blood diseases. Donation is somewhat painful, butrarely has lasting adverse effects. Patients can accept transplants only from donors with compatible immune systems. Those lacking a sibling match must seek donations from the population at large. The probability that two persons of the same race are compatible is less than 1/10,000. Health authorities maintain a registry of several million genetically-tested potential donors who have agreed to donate if asked. We study the peculiar structure of voluntary public good provision represented by the registry, and compare the marginal benefits and …

Examination Of The Mmpi-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Validity Scales In Civil Forensic Settings: Findings From Simulation And Known Group Samples, Dustin Wygant, Yossef Ben-Porath, Paul Arbisi, David Berry, David Freeman, Robert Heilbronner
Dustin B. Wygant
The current study examined the effectiveness of the MMPI-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath and Tellegen, 2008) over-reporting indicators in civil forensic settings. The MMPI-2-RF includes three revised MMPI-2 over-reporting validity scales and a new scale to detect over-reported somatic complaints. Participants dissimulated medical and neuropsychological complaints in two simulation samples, and a known-groups sample used symptom validity tests as a response bias criterion. Results indicated large effect sizes for the MMPI-2-RF validity scales, including a Cohen's d of .90 for Fs in a head injury simulation sample, 2.31 for FBS-r, 2.01 for F-r, and 1.97 for Fs in a medical …

The Displacement Effect Of Public Pensions On The Accumulation Of Financial Assets, Michael Hurd, Pierre-Carl Michaud, Susann Rohwedder
The Displacement Effect Of Public Pensions On The Accumulation Of Financial Assets, Michael Hurd, Pierre-Carl Michaud, Susann Rohwedder
Susann Rohwedder
The generosity of public pensions may depress private savings and provide incentives to retire early. While there is plenty of evidence supporting the latter effect, there remains considerable controversy as whether or not public pensions crowd out private savings. This paper uses international micro-datasets collected over recent years to investigate whether public pensions displace private savings. The identification strategy relies on differences in the progressivity or non-linearity of pension formulas across countries. We also make use of large heterogeneity in earnings across education group and country. The evidence we present is consistent with previous studies using cross sectional and time-series …
