Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Small numbers of graduates from few medical schools, and emigration of graduates to other countries, contribute to low physician presence in sub-Saharan Africa. The Sub-Saharan African Medical School Study examined the challenges, innovations, and emerging trends in medical education in the region. We identifi ed 168 medical schools; of the 146 surveyed, 105 (72%) responded. Findings from the study showed that countries are prioritising medical education scale-up as part of health-system strengthening, and we identifi ed many innovations in premedical preparation, teambased education, and creative use of scarce research support. The study also drew attention to ubiquitous faculty shortages in …

National Mine Action Strategy - Cambodia, The Royal Government Of Cambodia Nov 2010

National Mine Action Strategy - Cambodia, The Royal Government Of Cambodia

Global CWD Repository

Cambodia’s landmine problem is the result of a protracted sequence of internal and regional conflicts that affected the country from the mid 1960s until the end of 1998. The nature of landmine and ERW contamination in Cambodia is highly complex. The northwestern regions bordering Thailand are heavily affected, while other parts of the country (mainly the East) are considered moderate to low impact, affected mainly by ERW. Mines and ERW have caused an unacceptable number of casualties, both military and civilian and have hindered national development. Mine clearance started along the Cambodia-Vietnam border by the company of women soldiers of …

Help, I’M Lost! Developing A Library Mapping System Without Breaking The Bank, Paul S. Gallagher Nov 2010

Help, I’M Lost! Developing A Library Mapping System Without Breaking The Bank, Paul S. Gallagher

Library Scholarly Publications

Large libraries share a common challenge--helping patrons find materials. The Wayne State University Library System launched its library mapping application in February 2010, designed to help locate materials in the five WSU libraries. The system works within the catalog to show the location of materials, as well as provides a web form for use at the reference desk to lookup items by call number. Developed using open-source technology, it requires only minimal effort to update using a unique call number overlay mechanism. In addition to mapping shelved materials, the system provides information for any of the over three-hundred collections held …

Product Life Cycle Theory And The Maturation Of The Internet, Christopher S. Yoo Nov 2010

Product Life Cycle Theory And The Maturation Of The Internet, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

Much of the recent debate over Internet policy has focused on the permissibility of business practices that are becoming increasingly common, such as new forms of network management, prioritization, pricing, and strategic partnerships. This Essay analyzes these developments through the lens of the management literature on the product life cycle, dominant designs, technological trajectories and design hierarchies, and the role of complementary assets in determining industry structure. This analysis suggests that many of these business practices may represent nothing more than a reflection of how the nature of competition changes as industries mature. This in turn suggests that network neutrality …

The Impact Of Deployment And Psychological Well-Being On Family Relationships: A Secondary Analysis Of Air Force Community Assessment Data, Keita Franklin

Theses and Dissertations

Airmen serving in the U.S. Air Force have made significant contributions to the overall war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Deployment, combat exposure, and subsequent combat-related mental health issues can have effects that extended beyond the airmen to the family. The primary aim of this study was to determine the path through which such effects occur within the context of risk and protective factors. The risk factors identified in this study were: deployment length and frequency and psychological symptomology. The construct of social support was also examined as an identified protective factor. This study examined the relationships between all of …

Utilization Of Simulation To Teach Pelvic Examination Skills To Medical Students: Implications For Medical Education, Brenda Seago Nov 2010

Utilization Of Simulation To Teach Pelvic Examination Skills To Medical Students: Implications For Medical Education, Brenda Seago

Theses and Dissertations

Medical education is changing. Physicians have less time for teaching clinical skills and for direct observation of medical students, due to sicker patients in the hospital, shorter hospital stays, competing demands of research and patient care, and implementation of the eighty hour work week for residents. The consumer movement increased awareness of medical errors, patient safety and quality of healthcare. Teaching the pelvic examination is ethically complex. Questions have arisen about medical students learning to conduct the pelvic examination on actual patients. This study utilizes the pelvic examination simulator and genital teaching associates (GTAs) to teach pelvic exam skills to …

Motivating Faculty To Integrate The Library: We Can Work Together!, Judith Arnold, Veronica E. Bielat

Library Scholarly Publications

Faculty may be unaware of how many library resources are available to support their course assignments. Additionally their assignments may not be designed in a way that makes the best use of library resources. “Shopping list” assignments may cause students to spend too much time searching and not enough time engaging with the material and developing higher order thinking skills.

Two Wayne State Librarians share their experiences in developing a workshop for faculty to help them integrate the library in a meaningful way, to support student learning and development of information literacy skills. Using persistent linking to embed articles, book …

A Multi-Scale And Multi-Approach Investigation Of Sediment Yield And Runoff Flux In The Mara River Basin, Kenya, Mengistu Balew Defersha Nov 2010

A Multi-Scale And Multi-Approach Investigation Of Sediment Yield And Runoff Flux In The Mara River Basin, Kenya, Mengistu Balew Defersha

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to identify the current potential sediment source areas and quantify rate of erosion and runoff. Runoff plots were established at three sites and the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) and Erosion 3D models were applied at watershed scale. The highest total sediment yield was observed on cultivated land (162.38 g/m2) in the Nyangores sub-watershed and the lowest sediment yield (29.95 g/m2) was observed on grassland, in Amala downstream. The model evaluation indicated that both of the models perform well in estimation of runoff, however, the WEPP model performs better than Erosion …

Inactivation Of Ascaris Suum By Ammonia In Feces Simulating The Physical-Chemical Parameters Of The Solar Toilet Under Laboratory Conditions, Ligia Maria Cruz Espinoza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Access to sustainable sanitation systems is a determining factor in human health and economic development. However, more than a third of the world’s population lives without access to improved sanitation facilities. To meet the sanitation United Nations Millennium Development target, "halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation", a wide range of non conventional sanitation technologies have been implemented in developing countries, including waterless systems. These systems function by diverting urine away from feces and collecting, storing, and dehydrating the fecal material in watertight dehydration vaults. From a public …

The Information Practices Of People Living With Depression: Constructing Credibility And Authority, Tami Oliphant Nov 2010

The Information Practices Of People Living With Depression: Constructing Credibility And Authority, Tami Oliphant

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Depressive episodes and chronic depression often provide the impetus for both online and offline everyday life information-seeking and sharing and the seeking of support. While allopathic medication, psychiatric, and other biomedical services are the standard treatments for depression, people often use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to supplement or supplant biomedical treatments. Depression is a nebulous disorder with varying causes, illness trajectories, and a wide variety of potentially effective treatments. Often, treating and managing depression forms a project for life (Wikgren, 2001) where the need for information is continuous.

In the present study, I have used a constructionist, discourse analytic …
