Everyday Conflict And Daily Stressors: Coping Responses Of Black Women, J. Camille Hall
Everyday Conflict And Daily Stressors: Coping Responses Of Black Women, J. Camille Hall
Social Work Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this study was to explore how Black women cope with the impact of daily stressors in their lives. To understand stress and coping among Black women, it was necessary to explore the interlocking effects of race, gender, and social class on these stressors and their effects on the women’s ability to cope with the consequences for their health and emotional and psychological well-being. An exploratory design with grounded theory methods was used to develop a midrange theory about stress and coping among Black women on the basis of the women’s experience with sociocultural factors, namely, race, gender, …

Beyond Sprawl And Anti-Sprawl, Thad Williamson
Beyond Sprawl And Anti-Sprawl, Thad Williamson
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The widespread acceptance of the term suburban sprawl stands as a major rhetorical victory for critics of the land-use, transportation, and growth patterns characteristic of metropolitan America. As both friends and critics of suburbia have noted, the term sprawl itself has an almost inescapably pejorative connotation (Gordon and Richardson 1997; O'Flaherty 2005). Despite the best efforts of numerous academics to define the term with rigor and precision, what comes to mind first for most people on hearing the term is not some scholar or another's strategy for defining and measuring sprawl, but rather an image of something unpleasant-- a particularly …
Political Economy, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy
Political Economy, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Political economy describes how human societies are organized by exchange. The critical issue for political economists is the interaction between self-directed decision making and the incentives that turn decisions into approved outcomes. In this interaction, political economists see a key role for leadership, a role that depends upon our common concern for others (Robbins, 1981). There are three roles, then, for leadership in the political economist’s model: self-directed decision making, incentive making, and establishing the criteria for approved outcomes.
Delphi Therapy, Donelson R. Forsyth
Delphi Therapy, Donelson R. Forsyth
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The Delphi technique is a structured forecasting and decision-making method that assesses and summarizes the individually held opinions and judgments of group members with little or no discussion or deliberation among the members. Named for the legendary Delphic oracle, this method involves surveying members repeatedly, with the results of each round of surveys informing the framing of the questions for subsequent rounds. The Delphi technique avoids some of the limitations of traditional group decision-making procedures and is particularly useful when the group members are so widely divided on issues that a face-to-face discussion will not be productive.
A Man Of Passion And Vision: George Whitewolf, David E. Wilkins
A Man Of Passion And Vision: George Whitewolf, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
George Whitewolf's home was also just a stone's throw from Washington, D.C, and many Natives from the Lakota, Haudenosaunee, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, and countless other nations would stop at George's place for rest and ceremonies as they prepped for their difficult diplomatic visits to Congress and the BIA to discuss treaty rights, protest events like the Longest Walk, and other politically incendiary topics. In the 1970s, George was also very active in the American Indian Movement and his home was under frequent surveillance by the FBI.
Within a few years, George and his allies had made tremendous progress on both fronts …
Obesity Prevention: A Review Of The Interactions And Interventions, And Some Policy Implications, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza
Obesity Prevention: A Review Of The Interactions And Interventions, And Some Policy Implications, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions especially in the developed and, more recently, in the developing world where the problem is compounded by myriad socio-economic, demographic, built and natural environmental factors. This review examines the possible causes, consequences and policy implications using a multilevel, multispectral framework. The causes of obesity clearly are multifaceted and involve numerous interactions. Together with economic incentives, allocation of physical and financial resources to community intervention strategies through educational programs as well as better land use planning would be helpful in promoting healthier and sustainable communities. Towards this goal, we proposed a dynamic and integrated Individual, Social, …

Human Rights Reference Sources: A Critical Annotated Bibliography, Chad M. Kahl, Stephanie Davis-Kahl
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
The area of human rights has had significant attention both nationally and internationally in the press and in the political arena. While there is a renewed commitment to human rights advocacy, there is also an upward trend in popular culture of depictions of torture. This article provides critical annotations of English-language reference sources, published since 1990, and available both in print and online, in an effort to aid librarians collecting and weeding materials for human rights research.
Understanding Rejection Across Ingroups And Outgroups, Prasant Dubey
Understanding Rejection Across Ingroups And Outgroups, Prasant Dubey
Honors Theses
Black and White male undergraduates from the University of Richmond participated in a study addressing rejection. The purpose was to discover how responses to rejection vary amongst individuals who are rejected by their in-group versus their out-group. In other words, is a white male more likely to be impacted by rejection from another white male (a member of the in- group) or a black male (a member of the out-group)? Likewise, it was interesting to note how black individuals respond differently to rejection by the in-group and out-group. Responses to rejection feedback, regarding self-esteem, attributions to rejection, cognitive capacity, and …

The Intelligibility And Comprehensibility Of Learner Speech In Russian: A Study In The Salience Of Pronunciation, Lexicon, Grammar And Syntax, Jill A. Neuendorf
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
This study of L-2 Russian interlanguage production examined the salience of phonetic, lexical and syntactical features for L-1 listener intelligibility, based on L-2recitation of written scripts (Part I) and also unrehearsed speech (Part II). Part III of the study investigated strategies used by native-speaking teachers of Russian as a Second Language and experienced Russian host families to facilitate comprehensibility of L-2Russian speech.
The respondent group consisted of 51 native-Russian speakers plus a 20-member ethnic Russian control group, whose speech samples were also rated by the informant group. The 51 respondents comprised four sub-groups based on residency (Russia/US), profession (teacher/non-teacher of …
Embedding Semantic Markup In Web Pages, Virginia Shilling
Embedding Semantic Markup In Web Pages, Virginia Shilling
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The World Wide Web first revolutionized the presentation of text and data for people. The next wave of technology, the semantic web, will make data accessible to computers as well as people. Underpinning the semantic web is the Resource Description Framework (RDF). One way to make RDF-compatible data available on the web is to embed it in the X/HTML document. A small project investigates the available syntax for encoding RDF in web pages, the available descriptive vocabularies, and discusses the results of manually encoding web pages using RDFa and Dublin Core

Electronic Information Seeking Among Lis Postgraduate Students At Makerere University, Uganda, C. Okello-Obura, J. R. Ikoja-Odongo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Without clearly understanding the users’ level of usage of resources, attitudes and the e-resources literacy levels, it is difficult to promote reading in electronic environment. Developing countries within their limited library resources need to ensure that the e-resources acquired or subscribed to are optimally used. It is on that basis that the study was designed and conducted among the postgraduate Library and Information Science (LIS) students of Makerere University, Uganda to establish the level of computer skills of its LIS postgraduate students; determine the use of electronic information resources; their attitudes towards e-resources; access; their e-resources literacy levels and propose …
