Rocky Mountain Blue: A Shifting Terrain In The Rocky Mountain West, Cannon Brooke Jan 2010

Rocky Mountain Blue: A Shifting Terrain In The Rocky Mountain West, Cannon Brooke

WWU Graduate School Collection

This study examines the changes in partisan distribution across the states of the Rocky Mountain West. Previous research on realignment explained the movement of states toward the Democratic Party as an issue-based phenomenon and fracturing of the party in power. Specifically, research from scholars such as V.O Key and Sundquist find that a critical juncture normally triggers change in party system. This study tests whether the secular realignment in the region may perhaps be better explained by demographics. A longitudinal case study along with Lijphart's most similar design system will be used to consider three demographic variables to test if …

Second-Order Characteristics Of Multi-Level Elections In Spain, Megan J. De La Cruz Jan 2010

Second-Order Characteristics Of Multi-Level Elections In Spain, Megan J. De La Cruz

WWU Graduate School Collection

This thesis project applies the second-order framework to compare levels of elections in Spain. I pay special interest to the link between the country's electoral timing, territorial cleavages, and central-regional dynamic. The project implements two tests, one to measure vote choice in relation to general election expectations and cycles, and another to measure voter volatility between first- and second-order levels. Both tests are broken down by regional electorates and applied to elections to the European Parliament and regional assemblies. In light of the varying levels of decentralization found among Spanish regions, I expect test results to vary between regions that …

Getting To 'Win' 'Win': The Case Of The Redevelopment Of Bellingham, Washington's Downtown Waterfront, Christopher M. Conway Jan 2010

Getting To 'Win' 'Win': The Case Of The Redevelopment Of Bellingham, Washington's Downtown Waterfront, Christopher M. Conway

WWU Graduate School Collection

Building on Schattschneider's (1960) conflict expansion theory, this study sheds light on the changing role of critical citizens power to delay and defeat development projects. Little attention has been focused on the how the rise in critical citizens can potentially block policy adoption within large redevelopment programs. This thesis examines the relationship between the level of consensus among economic stakeholders [Port and City] and level of mobilization in critical citizens to analyze the pace of rebuilding Bellingham, Washington's downtown waterfront from 2005 to 2009.

The Impact Of Reticulation On A Movement's Ability To Sustain Mobilization In The Presence And Absence Of Opportunities, Eliot Assoudeh Jan 2010

The Impact Of Reticulation On A Movement's Ability To Sustain Mobilization In The Presence And Absence Of Opportunities, Eliot Assoudeh

WWU Graduate School Collection

This thesis discusses the impact of a movement's reticulation structures on its ability to sustain mobilization in the presence and absence of political opportunities. It initially focuses on the relationship between the nature of a movement's reticulation structure and the movement's behavior. It goes on to explore specific connections between varied reticulation configurations and specific behaviors they are associated with, based on a detailed comparison between the student movement and women's movement in Iran from 1997 to 2008. This study shows that a movement's reticulation structure will affect its behavior. The student movement employs a hybrid composed of cliques and …

The Games were an opportunity for Vancouver, Whistler, and British Columbia to showcase their cities and their region. With an expected 3 billion people from around the world tuning in to watch the Games, planners and organizers were extremely cognizant of the opportunities and …

Effects Of Parental Depressive Symptoms And Marital Discord On Parental Functioning And Parent-Infant Relationships, Clare R. White Jan 2010

Effects Of Parental Depressive Symptoms And Marital Discord On Parental Functioning And Parent-Infant Relationships, Clare R. White

WWU Graduate School Collection

Mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms were examined as predictors of parentally reported parenting distress, infant difficulty, and dysfunctional parent-infant interactions within an actor-partner interdependence model approach (Cook & Kenny, 2005). Observed marital conflict styles were examined as mediators of associations. A community sample of 72 couples participated with their 6-14 month old infants. Path analyses using EQS (Bentler, 2005) revealed that mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms were significantly associated with increased parenting distress. Mothers' and fathers' parenting distress was subsequently associated with increases in infant difficulty. Fathers' depressive symptoms predicted greater dysfunctional father-infant interactions, and additionally predicted greater dysfunctional mother-infant …

The Relationship Between Parental Conflict And Family Interactions: The Role Of Emotional Security And Parenting Behaviors, Nichole Stettler Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Parental Conflict And Family Interactions: The Role Of Emotional Security And Parenting Behaviors, Nichole Stettler

WWU Graduate School Collection

Interparental conflict (IPC) is an inevitable part of family life which has been linked to child adjustment. Two theories have been proposed to explain this relationship. The emotional security hypothesis represents a direct path by which IPC affects children by threatening their sense of felt security in the interparental relationship. In contrast, the spillover hypothesis suggests that IPC affects children indirectly by influencing parenting practices. The current study extends previous research by examining both of these pathways in families with infants, as well as testing how IPC may contribute to family outcomes. Seventy-four two-parent families of 6- to 14- month-old …

Selecting Success: Assimilation Experiences Of 1.5 And 2nd Generation Mexicans In Seattle, Gregory W. Toledo Jan 2010

Selecting Success: Assimilation Experiences Of 1.5 And 2nd Generation Mexicans In Seattle, Gregory W. Toledo

WWU Graduate School Collection

Relatively recent immigration from non-traditional sending areas such as Latin America and Asia reignited scholarship dedicated to understanding and measuring the adaptation and assimilation of immigrants and their descendents. Segmented assimilation theory emerged from this scholarship and predicts three pathways of assimilation for the children of immigrants: positive, downward and selective. I focused on selective assimilation - an assimilation strategy that intentionally preserves culture of origin and maintains relationships to co-nationals and an immigrant community. I explored successful assimilation strategies employed by 1.5 and second generation Mexicans that live in Seattle, Washington. Surveys and interviews administered to a small sample …

High performance female athletes can jeopardize their health if their energy requirements during preparations for competitions are excessive. The problems that result are called the Female Athlete Triad characterized by low energy availability with or without disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction/ amenorrhea, and osteoporosis and either alone or in combination can lead to more serious pathologies. The goal here is to determine whether intercollegiate female athletes exhibit elements of the triad at Western Washington University. Sixteen athletes from Western Washington University's soccer and cross-country program were recruited. Participant's average age was 19.24 years with an average height of 65.83 inches, average …

Identity Politics At Grand Ronde: Toward An Ethnohistory Of The Tribes Of The Willamette Valley, 1855-1901, Nora K. Pederson Jan 2010

Identity Politics At Grand Ronde: Toward An Ethnohistory Of The Tribes Of The Willamette Valley, 1855-1901, Nora K. Pederson

WWU Graduate School Collection

In the 19th century the federal government and local Indian agents began a series of policies aimed at breaking down tribal distinctions at the Grand Ronde reservation in northwestern Oregon. The 'successes' of these assimilation policies were well documented by contemporary federal officials, missionaries and anthropologists. Today many ethnohistorians continue to write about the history of Grand Ronde as if tribes had dissolved by the end of the 19th century. Over the last 20 years most scholars who have written on 19th century identity at Grand Ronde view identity as a social phenomenon and try to incorporate indigenous perspectives, but …

Helping Adolescents Forgive : The Use Of Forgiveness Education At An Inpatient Mental Health Facility, Tiffany R. Everding Jan 2010

Helping Adolescents Forgive : The Use Of Forgiveness Education At An Inpatient Mental Health Facility, Tiffany R. Everding

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Understanding the concept of forgiveness has demonstrated to be a complex process (Walker & Gorsuch, 2004; McCullough & vanOyen Witvliet, 2002). Enright and the Human Development Study Group (1991) developed a process model of forgiveness as a way for people to constructively deal with their anger and improve overall psychological well-being after experiencing a deep hurt. Due to the reported benefits illustrated by forgiveness intervention studies, future research is needed to examine the effectiveness of forgiveness education with adolescents in a clinical setting. The current study implemented a forgiveness education intervention with adolescents at local inpatient mental health facility examining …

The Influence Of Treatment Team Cohesion In The Success Of In-Home Mental Health Treatment For Children And Adolescents With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Jaimie C. Orndorff

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Background: The author pursued this area of interest due to having had a positive experience working as a therapist within a high cohesion treatment team in an in-home setting. This experience with a high cohesion team seemed to lead to more successful results than other teams that were deemed low cohesion, in the same format. This experience led to a general curiosity about why the team this author was on was more effective. Additional research allowed this author to determine the possible link between cohesion, success of treatment and reduced risk for burnout, defined as a response to chronic job …

The Impact Of Therapeutic Alliance On Outcomes In Parent-Child Dyadic Interventions, Ryan M. Smith Jan 2010

The Impact Of Therapeutic Alliance On Outcomes In Parent-Child Dyadic Interventions, Ryan M. Smith

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

An infant’s attachment relationship with primary caregivers has been demonstrated to have a long-term relationship to an individual’s social and emotional functioning throughout the lifespan. Recognizing the critical importance of this period, interventions to facilitate secure attachment are now being evaluated for treatment efficacy. Evaluation of these treatments has typically focused on the components of treatment, examining changes in maternal sensitivity, parental attachment representations, and concrete support to address basic needs, housing, or other contextual factors, and evidence has been found to support the inclusion of these factors. However, little is known regarding what elements of treatment impact the effectiveness …

Promoting Resiliency: Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth In Trauma Clinicians, Christopher Howard Jan 2010

Promoting Resiliency: Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth In Trauma Clinicians, Christopher Howard

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth (VPG) and Vicarious Traumatization (VT) are two potential outcomes of clinical work with trauma survivors. The aim of this study was to test a predictive model of these constructs, allowing a fuller understanding of preventive strategies clinicians might employ to inoculate themselves against the potential hazards of service provision and provide the highest quality of clinical care. VPG and VT were investigated in 63 self-identified trauma therapists. The results showed that VPG is facilitated by engagement in successful services subsequent to a traumatic event. Self-Care emerged as a poignant buffer against various indices of vicarious traumatization. Other …

A Library And Its Community: Exploring Perceptions Of Collaboration, Phoebe Vincenza Daurio Jan 2010

A Library And Its Community: Exploring Perceptions Of Collaboration, Phoebe Vincenza Daurio

Dissertations and Theses

This study explores perceptions of interorganizational collaboration through an investigation of the opinions and actions of a public library and three community-based organizations. Interorganizational collaboration is often viewed as an effective strategy for accomplishing objectives that would not otherwise be possible with a single organization. Particularly for complex societal issues such as adult literacy, researchers and practitioners believe collaboration between organizations is necessary in order to achieve desired outcomes. Public libraries are engaging in collaborations also to extend their reach, establish the library’s relevance, increase community involvement, and advocate for their position as a community asset.

This thesis is a …

A Structural And Functional Analysis Of Codeswitching In Mi Vida Gitana 'My Gypsy Life,' A Bilingual Play, Gustavo Javier Fernandez Jan 2010

A Structural And Functional Analysis Of Codeswitching In Mi Vida Gitana 'My Gypsy Life,' A Bilingual Play, Gustavo Javier Fernandez

Dissertations and Theses

The present study analyzed the language in the script of the bilingual play Mi Vida Gitana 'My Gypsy Life' (Malán, 2006) in order to better understand issues relating to codeswitching (CS). The analysis was done from a structural and a functional perspective and utilized various models developed by renowned CS scholars.

For the structural analysis, I utilized concepts and ideas put forth in the three-tiered typology created by Muysken (2000) and the Matrix Language Frame model developed by Myers-Scotton (1993). The results of this portion of the study showed that some form of CS, whether occurring between turns or within …

Rashomon Comes To The Courtroom: The Adoption Of The Lay Judge System In Japan, Its Impact On Jurisprudence, And The Implications For Civic Engagement, Bryan Matthew Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

In May of 2009, Japan began formal operations of the "saiban-in seido" or "lay judge system," a quasi-jury means of criminal trial adjudication that represents the first occasion since 1943 that average Japanese citizens will be required to fulfill a role in the criminal jurisprudential process. While the lay judge system promises to affect the methods and procedures of criminal trials in Japan, recent scholarship in the United States has raised an interesting question: to what degree can the lay participatory adjudication process facilitate greater levels of civic engagement in past citizen jurists once their service has completed?

It …
