Female Political Leadership And The Prevalence Of Water Borne Diseases: Evidence From A Natural Experiment In India, Ambrish Dongre Dec 2009

Female Political Leadership And The Prevalence Of Water Borne Diseases: Evidence From A Natural Experiment In India, Ambrish Dongre

Ambrish A Dongre

This paper examines the relationship between prevalence of water borne diseases and gender of the head of the village councils by exploiting a natural experiment in local governance in India. A constitutional amendment in early 1990s ensured that only women could contest the elections and be the head in at least one- third of the village councils selected through an exogenous process. Utilizing a unique sample survey, we show that having a woman as the council head seems to have no effect on the prevalence of water borne diseases. But if we look into the sub-categories of the female council …

Policy Innovation, Intergovernmental Relations, And The Adoption Of Climate Protection Initiatives By U.S. Cities, Rachel Krause Dec 2009

Policy Innovation, Intergovernmental Relations, And The Adoption Of Climate Protection Initiatives By U.S. Cities, Rachel Krause

Rachel M. Krause

In the absence of federal requirements, how do state- and municipal-level characteristics impact the probability of local policy innovation? This article provides insight by examining the adoption of sub-national climate change mitigation initiatives in the United States. Drawing from literature on policy innovation, a multilevel model is developed to examine the factors influencing over 900 U.S. cities to eschew free-rider tendencies and formally commit to greenhouse gas reduction. Multilevel analysis recognizes the nested structure of cities within states and accounts for the shared economic, political, and policy environments experienced by cities within the same state. The level of initiative state …

Hidden In Plain Sight: What Cost-Of-Crime Research Can Tell Us About Investing In Police, Paul Heaton Dec 2009

Hidden In Plain Sight: What Cost-Of-Crime Research Can Tell Us About Investing In Police, Paul Heaton

Paul Heaton

Many state and local governments are facing significant fiscal challenges, forcing policymakers to confront difficult trade-offs as they consider how to allocate scarce resources across numerous worthy initiatives. To achieve their policy priorities, it will become increasingly important for policymakers to concentrate resources on programs that can clearly demonstrate that they improve their constituents' quality of life. To identify such programs, cost/benefit analysis can be a powerful tool for objectively adjudicating the merits of particular programs. On the surface, all such programs aim to improve quality of life, but whether they actually achieve — or will achieve — what they …

Factors Related To Physicians' Willingness To Vaccinate Girls Against Hpv: The Importance Of Subjective Norms And Perceived Behavioral Control, Michelle Campo, Natoshia Askelson, John Lowe, Leslie Dennis

Michelle L. Campo

This study assessed factors related to physicians' intentions to vaccinate patients against human papillomavirus. A random sample of physicians was surveyed. The survey questions focused on the constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the relationship of theoretical constructs to intention to vaccinate. Of the 207 physicians who responded, intentions to vaccinate were very high (86.5%). On a scale of 1 to 7 (strongly disagree to strongly agree) physicians had positive attitudes toward the vaccine. Physicians reported the vaccine was a good idea (M = 6.65, SD = 0.79), beneficial (M = 6.64, …

The Ces-D In Chinese American Women: Construct Validity, Diagnostic Validity For Major Depression, And Cultural Response Bias., Z Li, M Hicks Dec 2009

The Ces-D In Chinese American Women: Construct Validity, Diagnostic Validity For Major Depression, And Cultural Response Bias., Z Li, M Hicks

Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks

Previous studies of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in Chinese Americans describe internal reliability and factor structure. We report CES-D construct validity and diagnostic validity for major depression in a probability sample of 168 community-dwelling Chinese American women. Internal consistency was satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha=0.86). Good construct validity was indicated by significantly higher mean CES-D scores for respondents who reported lower social support, worse self-perceived general health, or stressful life events, including intimate partner violence. Cultural response bias was found, with positively-stated CES-D items (e.g. "I was happy") producing higher depression scores in immigrants and subjects who preferred …

American Journalism History Reader, Bonnie Brennen, Hanno Hardt

Bonnie Brennen

The American Journalism History Reader presents important primary texts—news articles and essays about journalism from all stages of the history of the American press—alongside key works of journalism history and criticism. The volume aims to place journalism history in its theoretical context, to familiarize the reader with essential works of, and about, journalism, and to chart the development of the field.

The reader moves chronologically through American journalism history from the eighteenth-century to the present, combining classic sources and contemporary insights. Each century's section begins with a critical introduction, which establishes the social and political environment in which the media …

Conteted Heritage In The Ancient City Of Peace, William Feighery

William Feighery

As the imperial capital of thirteen dynasties Xi’an, formerly known as Chang’an (eternal peace), houses a legacy of many of the most important periods of Chinese history and is one of the great archeological centers of the world. This legacy of political and cultural dominance places Xi’an at the forefront of debates on cultural heritage and its role in the evolution of China in the 21st century. Xi’an is currently under a triad of influences from processes of globalization, urban transition and domestic and international tourism. In recent decades and particularly since the dawn on the new millennium, the historic …

The Cost Of Crime To Society: New Crime-Specific Estimates For Policy And Program Evaluation, Michael French, Kathryn Mccollister, Hai Fang Dec 2009

The Cost Of Crime To Society: New Crime-Specific Estimates For Policy And Program Evaluation, Michael French, Kathryn Mccollister, Hai Fang

Michael T. French

Estimating the cost to society of individual crimes is essential to the economic evaluation of many social programs, such as substance abuse treatment and community policing. A review of the crime-costing literature reveals multiple sources, including published articles and government reports, which collectively represent the alternative approaches for estimating the economic losses associated with criminal activity. Many of these sources are based upon data that are more than 10 years old, indicating a need for updated figures. This study presents a comprehensive methodology for calculating the cost to society of various criminal acts. Tangible and intangible losses are estimated using …

Body Billboards And Brand Colonization: Embodied Corporate Advertising In Postmodern Branding Culture, Brandon Hensley Dec 2009

Body Billboards And Brand Colonization: Embodied Corporate Advertising In Postmodern Branding Culture, Brandon Hensley

Brandon O. Hensley

Body billboard advertising is a phenomenon that has emerged over the past decade. It involves tattooing corporate logos/messages on the flesh in ways that are visible to other people. These ads are "branded" on the bodies of individuals willing to rent out "spaces" to companies that pay to affix a corporate image/message on them. This paper seeks to examine this practice as it relates to a postmodern landscape where culture is mass produced, identity is unstable and subject to corporate domination, and living bodies are commodified in the reification of corporate presence in all facets of society. Body advertising is …

Using An Interdisciplinary Approach To Teach Undergraduates Communication And Information Literacy Skills, Andrea Dinkelman, Jeanine Aune, Gail Nonnecke

Andrea L. Dinkelman

For successful and productive careers, undergraduate students need effective communication and critical thinking skills; information literacy is a substantial component in the development of these skills. Students often perceive communication courses as distinct and separate from their chosen discipline. Faculty from the Departments of English and Horticulture and the library at Iowa State University collaborated in a foundation communication course (English 250). The course incorporates five components—finding information sources; evaluating information sources; and preparing an annotated bibliography, a research paper, and a research poster—all within the context of horticulture. The objective of the collaboration was to integrate communication and information …

Subjects: Grammatical Relations, Grammatical Functions And Functional Categories, Ileana Paul Dec 2009

Subjects: Grammatical Relations, Grammatical Functions And Functional Categories, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This paper presents an overview of how the notion of “subject” has been defined in linguistic theory. Although the term developed out of Artistotelian logic, the use has been narrowed to refer to the grammatical relation (or function). Over the past fifty years, the definition of subject and its universality has been the source of much debate. Broadly Chomskian approaches claim that grammatical relations such as subject are not primitives of the grammar and can be derived from phrase structure. As such, testing for the subject involves constituency tests. Other approaches (Relational Grammar, Lexical-Function Grammar) posit grammatical relations as primitives …

Economic Ideas And Development Strategy: The Case Of London Ontario, Neil Bradford Dec 2009

Economic Ideas And Development Strategy: The Case Of London Ontario, Neil Bradford

Neil Bradford

The past two decades in Canada have witnessed significant economic restructuring and public policy innovation. While most research concentrates on federal recovery plans and provincial adjustment strategies, this article makes the case for studying actors and places on the restructuring front lines. Offering an ideational analysis of change dynamics in London, Ontario, a mid-sized manufacturing city, the article reveals a pattern of incremental policy adjustment even as bold ideas contesting the status quo were brought forward. Arguing that particular institutional-political settings operative at different governance scales shape the policy influence of ideas, the article situates the London experience in broader …

Property Crimes At O'Hare International Airport Post 9/11: The Impact Of Increased Security, Brian Johnson, Christine Yalda, Christopher Kierkus Dec 2009

Property Crimes At O'Hare International Airport Post 9/11: The Impact Of Increased Security, Brian Johnson, Christine Yalda, Christopher Kierkus

Christopher A. Kierkus

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks permanently transformed aviation security, generating more intensive security-related practices. Although these enhanced security measures primarily sought to prevent future terrorist attacks, they also may have provided a secondary benefit of reducing property crimes at airports. The present case study examines changes in airport security at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport post-9/11 in the context of routine activities theory. The study first posits that increased security measures at O'Hare should have resulted in increased capable guardianship, thereby reducing the number of suitable targets and criminal opportunities for motivated offenders. After identifying various changes in airport security …

A Gendered Assessment Of The "Threat Of Victimization", David May, Nicole Rader, Sarah Goodrum Dec 2009

A Gendered Assessment Of The "Threat Of Victimization", David May, Nicole Rader, Sarah Goodrum

David May

Rader has called for a change in how researchers study fear of crime, suggesting that fear of crime, perceptions of risk, and experiences with victimization are interrelated dimensions of the larger ‘‘threat of victimization’’ concept. In this study, the authors examine how each independent dimension affects additional theoretical dimensions of the ‘‘threat of victimization’’ and how these relationships vary by gender. Using data from residents of Kentucky, the authors estimate a series of multivariate linear and logistic regression models. The findings presented here suggest that gender differences do exist in the components of the threat of victimization and that many …

The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur Dec 2009

The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur

Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur

In her essay “The Spectre of Class: Educating and Advising for Self-Efficacy” Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur discusses the importance of building student self-efficacy. However, as Arthur points out, creating an environment where students believe in their capabilities to learn and perform at a particular level is deeply influenced by one’s class background. As Arthur states, “These students have grown up in a culture that values individualism and places responsibility for success and blame for failure squarely on the shoulders of each person.” Arthur speaks more generally about creating self-efficacy and offers insight in how to maneuver around and transcend the …

A Global Perspective On Happiness And Fertility, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla Dec 2009

A Global Perspective On Happiness And Fertility, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla

Rachel Margolis

The literature on fertility and happiness has neglected comparative analysis. we investigate the fertility/happiness association using data from the world values Surveys for 86 countries. we fnd that, globally, happiness decreases with the number of children. this association, however, is strongly modifed by individual and contextual factors. most importantly, we find that the association between happiness and fertility evolves from negative to neutral to positive above age 40, and is strongest among those who are likely to beneft most from upward intergenerational transfers. in addition, analyses by welfare regime show that the negative fertility/ happiness association for younger adults is …
