Attachment In Relation To Affect Regulation And Interpersonal Functioning Among Substance Use Disorder Inpatients, Fred Arne Thorberg, Michael Lyvers Dec 2009

Attachment In Relation To Affect Regulation And Interpersonal Functioning Among Substance Use Disorder Inpatients, Fred Arne Thorberg, Michael Lyvers

Mike Lyvers

Attachment theory has been conceptualised as an affect regulation theory, proposing that attachment is associated with the expression and recognition of emotions as well as interpersonal functioning. Previous research has reported affect regulation difficulties in substance use disorders and addiction has been considered an attachment disorder. However, scarce empirical research exists on the relationship of attachment in relation to affect regulation and interpersonal functioning in those with substance use problems. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate potential associations between attachment, negative mood regulation (NMR) expectancies, fear of intimacy and self-differentiation in substance abusers. The revised adult …

Does Whitening Happen? Distinguishing Between Race And Color Labels In An African-Descended Community In Peru, Tanya Golash-Boza Dec 2009

Does Whitening Happen? Distinguishing Between Race And Color Labels In An African-Descended Community In Peru, Tanya Golash-Boza

tanya golash-boza

This article explores how race and color labels are used to describe people in an Afro-Peruvian community. This article is based on analyses of 88 interviews and 18 months of fieldwork in an African-descended community in Peru. The analyses of these data reveal that, if we consider race and color to be conceptually distinct, there is no “mulatto escape hatch,” no social or cultural whitening, and no continuum of racial categories in the black Peruvian community under study. This article considers the implications of drawing a conceptual distinction between race and color for research on racial classifications in Latin America. …

More Than Visiting Hours: Maintaining Ties Between Incarcerated Mothers And Their Children, Venezia Michalsen, Jeanne M. Flavin, Tanya Krupat

Jeanne M Flavin

The majority of people in America’s prisons are the parents of minor children. Incarcerated moth- ers, in particular, were likely to have been a part of their children’s lives before their imprison- ment, and most will soon be returning to the community and to their children. Research has shown that it is in the best interests of the mothers and the children to maintain a relationship across the prison bars. In this article, we use the example of New York State to show how institu- tional policies and structures can impede or encourage efforts to maintain ties between women and …

Symbolic Or Substantive Policy? Measuring The Extent Of Local Commitment To Climate Protection, Rachel M. Krause Dec 2009

Symbolic Or Substantive Policy? Measuring The Extent Of Local Commitment To Climate Protection, Rachel M. Krause

Rachel M. Krause

Over 1,000 U.S. municipalities have formally committed to reduce their local greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through participation in one of several climate protection networks. This has attracted the attention of researchers interested in theories of free-riding and local political decision making who question why municipalities become engaged in this global effort. However, whereas joining a climate protection network or adopting an emissions reduction goal are relatively low cost acts, the implementation of such policies entails higher costs. This raises legitimate questions about the extent and type of follow-through made on municipal climate protection commitments. This paper begins to fill-in the …

Implementation Issues For Mobile-Wireless Infrastructure And Mobile Health Care Computing Devices For A Hospital Ward Setting, Liza Heslop, Stephen Weeding, Linda Dawson, Julie Fisher, Andrew Howard

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

mWard is a project whose purpose is to enhance existing clinical and administrative decision support and to consider mobile computers, connected via wireless network, for bringing clinical information to the point of care. The mWard project allowed a limited number of users to test and evaluate a selected range of mobile-wireless infrastructure and mobile health care computing devices at the neuroscience ward at Southern Health’s Monash Medical Centre, Victoria, Australia. Before the project commenced, the ward had two PC’s which were used as terminals by all ward-based staff and numerous multidisciplinary staff who visited the ward each day. The first …

Does Electoral Reform Increase (Or Decrease) Political Equality?, Elizabeth Rigby, Melanie J. Springer Dec 2009

Does Electoral Reform Increase (Or Decrease) Political Equality?, Elizabeth Rigby, Melanie J. Springer

Elizabeth Rigby

Over recent decades, the American states have implemented electoral reforms making it easier for citizens to register and vote. This paper examines the “equality effects” of these reforms: the degree to which reform serves to equalize or further skew participation rates between the rich and poor. Using the Voter Supplement to the Current Population Survey, we generate state-level estimates of income bias in registration and voting for elections from 1978-2008. Findings support our theory that some electoral reforms promote equality, while others further stratify the electorate—particularly when state registration rolls are already unrepresentative in terms of income groups.

Spatial Inequality As Constitutional Infirmity: Equal Protection, Child Poverty And Place, Lisa R. Pruitt Dec 2009

Spatial Inequality As Constitutional Infirmity: Equal Protection, Child Poverty And Place, Lisa R. Pruitt

Lisa R Pruitt

This is the first in a series of articles that maps legal conceptions of (in)equality onto the socio-geographical concept of spatial inequality, with a view to generating legal remedies for those living in places marked by socioeconomic disadvantage. Written for a symposium on “rural law,” this article considers in particular whether the funding and delivery of government services at the county level in the state of Montana violate the state’s constitution because of the grossly disparate abilities among Montana counties to finance and provide such services. Pruitt’s analysis focuses on children as a particularly vulnerable and immobile population, many of …

The Political Psychology Of (De)Securitization: Place-Making Strategies In Denmark, Sweden, And Canada, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking Dec 2009

The Political Psychology Of (De)Securitization: Place-Making Strategies In Denmark, Sweden, And Canada, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

In this article we demonstrate how both state structures and collective agencies contribute to patterns of securitization and, in so doing, reconfigure conceptions of space and place. Focusing on the life-chances of Muslim minority populations in Denmark, Sweden, and Canada, we begin by establishing how experiences of empire and colonization have shaped dominant regimes of citizenship and multiculturalism. Analyzing responses to the Danish newspaper publication of the 'Mohammed cartoons', we illustrate the dynamics of place making that are operative in the political psychology of securitization. Our analysis illustrates the cosmopolitical and dialogical character of Canadian multiculturalism and how such a …

Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael E. Lewyn Dec 2009

Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael E. Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

The purpose of this paper is to ascertain (1) whether suburban sprawl is as widespread in Canadian metropolitan areas as in their American counterparts, and (2) whether Canadian government policies, and in particular Canadian municipal land use and transportation policies, encourage sprawl. The thesis concludes that sprawl is less widespread in two respects. First, Canadian central cities have not declined to the same extent as American central cities. Second, urban and suburban Canadians are less dependent on automobiles than are Americans. The thesis goes on to point out that in Canada, as in the United States, government land use and …

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison Dec 2009

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). The BCA HRC was created as a result of the access discrimination that has historically taken place in college sport (Brooks & Althouse, 2000; Cunningham & Sagas, 2005), which has consequently contributed to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in the head coach position in college football. The HRC …

Developing Constructs For Psychopathology Research: Research Domain Criteria, Charles A. Sanislow, Daniel S. Pine, Kevin J. Quinn, Michael J. Kozak, Marjorie A. Garvey, Robert K. Heinssen, Philip S. Wang, Bruce N. Cuthbert Dec 2009

Developing Constructs For Psychopathology Research: Research Domain Criteria, Charles A. Sanislow, Daniel S. Pine, Kevin J. Quinn, Michael J. Kozak, Marjorie A. Garvey, Robert K. Heinssen, Philip S. Wang, Bruce N. Cuthbert

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

There exists a divide between findings from integrative neuroscience and clinical research focused on mechanisms of psychopathology. Specifically, a clear correspondence does not emerge between clusters of complex clinical symptoms and dysregulated neurobiological systems, with many apparent redundancies. For instance, many mental disorders involve multiple disruptions in putative mechanistic factors (e.g., excessive fear, deficient impulse control), and different disrupted mechanisms appear to play major roles in many disorders. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework is a heuristic to facilitate the incorporation of behavioral neuroscience in the study of psychopathology. Such integration might be achieved by shifting the central research focus …

The Sustainable Food Movement: The Local, Slow And Justice Food Solutions To The Global Food Crisis, Marco Tavanti Dec 2009

The Sustainable Food Movement: The Local, Slow And Justice Food Solutions To The Global Food Crisis, Marco Tavanti

Marco Tavanti

Food is more than a commodity. The economic aspect of food needs to be integrated and balanced with the environmental and societal aspects of a sustainable food system. The author argues that a new movement for sustainable food is emerging as exemplified in the growing local (locavore), slow food and food justice movements. Drawing on the concepts of sustainability and the observations of growing food trends, the paper offers a new analysis of social movements between the global and the local. The environmental, social and economic frameworks of sustainability give local, “slow” and sovereignty solutions to the current global food …

Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2009

Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

Help-negation is expressed behaviorally by the refusal or avoidance of available help and cognitively by the inverse relationship between self-reported symptoms of psychological distress and help-seeking intentions. The current study is part of a larger multi-cite research program developed and led by the first author. It examines the association between suicidal ideation and intentions to seek help from friends, family and professional mental health sources in a sample of 302 Australian university students. Participants were 77.5% female and aged from 18-25 years old, with 85.4% aged 21 years or younger. Higher levels of suicidal ideation were related to lower help-seeking …
