Student Teaching Abroad Inter-Group Outcomes: A Comparative, Country-Specific Analysis, Binbin Jiang, Debra Coffey, Robert A. Devillar, Sandra Bryan

Journal of International and Global Studies

As student diversity becomes the norm in U.S. schools, future teachers must be comprehensively prepared to work with the increasingly diverse student population through application of informed instruction that enhances general and individual student learning and outcomes. Teacher Education programs increasingly promote student teaching in international settings as a substantive step to develop teachers who embody these new competencies and instructional practices. The proposed paper presentation offers a framework and analysis highlighting similarities and differences between two groups of student teachers in Belize (2005 and 2008). Findings are comparative and relate to the type and degree of (1) cultural-, professional-, …

Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro

Journal of International and Global Studies

International research collaboration is increasingly popular, providing many scholarly and practical benefits. These collaborative endeavors also encounter obstacles and costs, including ones involving issues of power and professional ethics. My study seeks to widen our understanding of international collaborative social science research by examining the complex origins, diverse activities, and clouded legacy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA). The ISA was an innovative collaborative teaching and research program founded by Julian Steward during World War II to meet many goals, including increasing social science capacity in Latin America, expanding knowledge about contemporary cultural change, strengthening area expertise …

All Roads Lead To Najaf: Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani’S Quiet Impact On Iraq’S 2010 Ballot And Its Aftermath, Ernesto H. Braam Ll.M

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper explores the influence of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani on political developments in Iraq in the post-Saddam Husayn era and examines the discourse surrounding Sistani regarding his perceived activism or “quietism” with respect to political matters. The doctrine and statements of this most prominent Shi’i religious leader are analyzed and interpreted in the context of Iraq’s contemporary, often violent, history. Specifically, Sistani’s public statements during the run-up to the 2010 parliamentary elections and their aftermath are examined for the extent to which his voice resonates among the Iraqi people. The analysis reveals that Sistani demonstrates concern for the …

Migration And Transculturation In The Digital Age: A Framework For Studying The “Space Between”, Padmini Banerjee Ph.D., Myna German Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Transnational immigrants today appear to live dual or even multiple lives across national borders, with help from a range of new technologies involving media and channels of communication such as Internet-based chat or telephony, mobile phones, and interactive online social networks. The authors explore the implications of accumulated findings on this aspect for researchers and scholars investigating the contemporary experience of global migration in relation to diasporas and their technology-enabled interconnections with home and host societies. Against the context of existing conceptual frameworks, the utility of the multi-dimensional construct of transculturalism (Ortiz, 1995 [1940]), involving the three processes of acculturation, …

Impact Of Eu’S Decisions On Euro-Skepticism Of A Turkish Religious Peripheral Party, Felicity Party, Imdat Ozen Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study achieved a group of objectives including the measuring of the impact of the EU’s decisions on trust-based, nationalism-based, and religion-based Euro-skepticism, as well as Euro-skepticism in general, by conducting content analysis of statements made by some elite members of a peripheral Turkish religious party, the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi, SP).The hypotheses were tested at two independent events (one on December 17, 2004 and the other on October 03, 2005). The data were collected from the pro-SP Milli Gazete. Each hypothesis was tested by using the two sample z-Test formula. The findings show that the two decisions by the …

Cross-Cultural Professional Development For Teachers Within Global Imbalances Of Power, Janelle Johnson Nov 2010

Cross-Cultural Professional Development For Teachers Within Global Imbalances Of Power, Janelle Johnson

Journal of International and Global Studies

Many of the international, supranational, national, and grassroots development organizations working in the field of education channel their efforts into professional development for teachers. This type of cross-cultural educational development occurs on a massive scale, but the amount of scholarly critique and engagement are disproportionately small. As part of a larger study, this chapter on transnational teacher education draws upon development studies and critical and Indigenous decolonizing methodologies for its theoretical frame. This praxis-oriented framework is used to conduct a comparative case study analysis of two distinct models of cross-cultural professional development for teachers: a small locally based non-profit development …

Integrated, Embedded, And Case-Based: Selling Library Instruction To The Business School, Andy Spackman, Leticia Camacho Nov 2010

Integrated, Embedded, And Case-Based: Selling Library Instruction To The Business School, Andy Spackman, Leticia Camacho

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

Library instruction can be a hard sell for the business school. The BYU Library has reached out using a variety of approaches: integrating sessions into specific courses, embedding librarians into Blackboard, and organizing a series of clinics inside the business school.

In the mold of Home Depot's clinics these open-door workshops are the opposite of course-integrated instruction. With attendance voluntary we have been forced to experiment with difference schedules, formats, and promotional efforts to fill seats. Prompted by student suggestions we have adopted the case-study approach dominant in many business schools and adapted it to the library instruction context.

We …

Fantasy Sports: The Road To Information Literacy Championships, Paul Waelchli, Sara Holladay

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

19.4 million fantasy sports players, many college students, rely on information literacy to succeed in fantasy sports leagues, but do not realize it. This session analyzes the connection between fantasy sports and information literacy and how librarians can use fantasy sports to make information literacy meaningful to students. A background on fantasy sports, media and research is provided. One library, University of Dubuque, connected information literacy skills to fantasy football for incoming student athletes. The planning, implementation, and assessment of those instruction sessions are outlined, which included the following steps:

1. Fantasy sports and fantasy football skills were mapped to …

New Learning, New Scholarship, New Spaces: Creating Dynamic Physical Environments, Laurie Alexander, Barbara Macadam Nov 2010

New Learning, New Scholarship, New Spaces: Creating Dynamic Physical Environments, Laurie Alexander, Barbara Macadam

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

Learning spaces, such as lecture halls, teaching laboratories, and quiet study nooks are still needed, but no longer fulfill the full range of students’ needs. As students choose to learn in dynamic environments, they need spaces that support intellectual curiosity and facilitate critical inquiry. By implementing a full spectrum of learning spaces, the University of Michigan Library reinforced the message that we are the place on campus where emerging information technologies, rich information resources, and user-focused services come together to support learning and scholarship. This presentation will provide critical concepts that are important to consider when transforming library spaces.

Improving Teaching And Learning Through Instructional Partnerships: Building Librarian Relationships With One-On-One, In-Depth Conversations, Rebecca Payne, Sheila Stoeckel

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

How can librarians work to improve their teaching and student learning and build relationships and community? One solution at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries is the creation of an Instructional Partnerships Program. The Program enables librarians to work on individual instructional goals with the help of a partner. Partner librarians help each other improve their teaching through self-directed activities of reflection, discussion, and observation. Presenters will discuss how the Program was developed and how partnerships are currently helping librarians improve their teaching skills and build supportive relationships with colleagues. With input from attendees, presenters will consider how the Program might …

Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers Nov 2010

Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

The session will be separated into two sections: breaking new ground and foundational pedagogies for new course architecture. The presenter will first describe several models of course redesign and apply them specifically to redesigning an info/tech literacy course. These models go from partial to complete re-architecting, so participants would be able to fit their current information literacy course(s) into one of these models, making this session very valuable to any librarian wishing to improve information literacy (IL) instruction at their institution.

The second section will focus on pedagogies used for over a decade in the sciences, humanities and education for …

Teaching The Teachers: Building Information Literacy Into The Biology Curriculum, Meris Mandernach

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

In a world that is saturated with questionable scientific information, producing information literate students should be the goal of every institution of higher learning. There are numerous studies that detail why information literacy should be integrated into the curriculum; however, there are few examples of how to do so. At James Madison University information literacy was successfully integrated into the Biology major. This presentation will include highlights from a workshop, in class presentations, and the development of an assessment instrument as well as an analysis of the overall success of this evolving partnership between librarians and teaching faculty.

Loring-Greenough House, North Yard Archaeogeophysics, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, John M. Steinberg, Christa M. Beranek, John Schoenfelder, Kathryn A. Catlin

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

An archaeogeophysical survey was carried out in May 2010 using Geonics EM-38 RT and a Malå Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system with a 500 MHz antenna over an 28x26 m grid immediately northeast of the Loring-Greenough house in Jamaica Plain, MA. Three major anomalies were identified. These anomalies have not been ground truthed, but they appear to be archaeological features. First, we suggest that there is builders trench just north of the house. Second, we suggest that there could be three east-west garden paths or other landscape features about 30 cm below the surface crossing the entire length of the …

A Comparison Between Unbiased Ridge And Least Squares Regression Methods Using Simulation Technique, Mowafaq M. Al-Kassab, Omar Q. Qwaider Nov 2010

A Comparison Between Unbiased Ridge And Least Squares Regression Methods Using Simulation Technique, Mowafaq M. Al-Kassab, Omar Q. Qwaider

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The parameters of the multiple linear regression are estimated using least squares ( LS ) and unbiased ridge regression methods (B̂(KI,J)). Data was created for fourteen independent variables with four different values of correlation between these variables using Monte Carlo techniques. The above methods were compared using the mean squares error criterion. Results show that the unbiased ridge method is preferable to the least squares method.

Reducing Selection Bias In Analyzing Longitudinal Health Data With High Mortality Rates, Xian Liu, Charles C. Engel, Han Kang, Kristie L. Gore

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two longitudinal regression models, one parametric and one nonparametric, are developed to reduce selection bias when analyzing longitudinal health data with high mortality rates. The parametric mixed model is a two-step linear regression approach, whereas the nonparametric mixed-effects regression model uses a retransformation method to handle random errors across time.

A Qualitative Study Of Coping In Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Heather Miller Kuhaneck, Tajhma Burroughs, Jamie Wright, Theresa Lemanczyk, Amy Rowntree Darragh

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

A significant body of research exists that explores the stressors of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are fewer studies, however, that examine specific effective coping strategies of mothers of children with an ASD. This qualitative study explored mothers’ perceptions of effective coping strategies for their parenting stressors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 mothers to inquire about their personal coping methods. Interviews were coded and emergent themes identified which included coping strategies such as “me time,” “planning,” “knowledge is power,” “sharing the load,” “lifting the restraints of labels,” and “recognizing the joys.” The information from …
