Creating The Creative Room, Brian Smith Jan 2011

Creating The Creative Room, Brian Smith

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project looks at the physical environment and how it can be used to enhance creativity. I used research to guide me in the construction of a 3-D model of what a creative space might look like if the physical qualities were used to bring out creativity.

[Introduction To] In Uncertain Times: American Foreign Policy After The Berlin Wall And 9/11, Melvyn P. Leffler, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 2011

[Introduction To] In Uncertain Times: American Foreign Policy After The Berlin Wall And 9/11, Melvyn P. Leffler, Jeffrey W. Legro

Bookshelf

In Uncertain Times considers how policymakers react to dramatic developments on the world stage. Few expected the Berlin Wall to come down in November 1989; no one anticipated the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September 2001. American foreign policy had to adjust quickly to an international arena that was completely transformed.

Melvyn P. Leffler and Jeffrey W. Legro have assembled an illustrious roster of officials from the George H. W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush administrations—Robert B. Zoellick, Paul Wolfowitz, Eric S. Edelman, Walter B. Slocombe, and Philip Zelikow. These policymakers describe how …

[Introduction To] Heroes: What They Do & Why We Need Them, Scott T. Allison, George R. Goethals

Bookshelf

Abraham Lincoln, Princess Diana, Rick in Casablanca--why do we perceive certain people as heroes? What qualities do we see in them? What must they do to win our admiration? In Heroes, Scott T. Allison and George R. Goethals offer a stimulating tour of the psychology of heroism, shedding light on what heroism and villainy mean to most people and why heroes--both real people and fictional characters--are so vital to our lives. The book discusses a broad range of heroes, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino, Senator Ted Kennedy, and explorer Ernest Shackleton, plus villains such …

[Introduction To] Honest Work: A Business Ethics Reader, Joanne B. Ciulla, Clancy Martin, Robert C. Solomon

Bookshelf

Revised in the aftermath of the worst global financial crisis since the Great Depression, the third edition of Honest Work: A Business Ethics Reader reflects and reinforces the editors' assertion that business ethics is primarily about the ethics of individuals. Featuring 115 brief articles and 89 real-life case studies, this unique anthology covers all aspects of business ethics under the overarching theme of the good life--what it means to students as individuals, what it means for business, and what it means for society. The book also includes an extensive chapter that explores the relationship between leadership and ethical behavior in …

[Introduction To] For The Greater Good Of All: Perspectives On Individualism, Society, And Leadership, Donelson R. Forsyth, Crystal L. Hoyt Jan 2011

[Introduction To] For The Greater Good Of All: Perspectives On Individualism, Society, And Leadership, Donelson R. Forsyth, Crystal L. Hoyt

Bookshelf

At every turn the variations in individual perspectives on human rights and potentials, contrasting philosophies on social justice and political structure, and even debates over the best solutions to pressing social problems reflect the vital tension between the one and the many. Are humans, as a species, motivated more by selfish desires or by a commitment to helping others? Can society require that individuals contribute to a common good, even when they will not personally benefit from it? Is a commitment to a common good that will benefit generations to come more morally laudable than working diligently to achieve personal …

Handmaiden And Queen: What Philosophers Find In The Question: "What Is A Leader?", Joanne B. Ciulla Jan 2011

Handmaiden And Queen: What Philosophers Find In The Question: "What Is A Leader?", Joanne B. Ciulla

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The word “philosophy” was born when the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos (572-497 BC) was asked if he thought he was a wise man. He answered no, he was merely a lover of wisdom – a phileo sophia. The philosophers who came after him were not as humble. Since philosophy was the study of just about everything, they dubbed it the “queen of the sciences”. Philosophy reigned supreme until Christian times when the theologian Clement of Alexandria (150–215?AD) demoted philosophy from the “queen” of the sciences to the “handmaid of theology”. The Enlightenment philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) also …

Justice, The Public Sector, And Cities: Re-Legitimating The Activist State, Thad Williamson Jan 2011

Justice, The Public Sector, And Cities: Re-Legitimating The Activist State, Thad Williamson

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The assault on egalitarian social justice in the United States over the past forty years has also been an assault on the legitimacy of vigorous public action to forward substantive goals. This is no coincidence: egalitarian conceptions of social justice invariably assume that the state will be the principal mechanism for establishing just social arrangements and rectifying inequalities (Rawls 1971; Dworkin 2000). In contrast, neoliberal conceptions of governance aim to both straitjacket the public sector and stymie efforts toward meaningful egalitarian redistribution. Given this strong internal connection between attractive conceptions of social justice and the idea of an active, competent …

Calatrava Reverie, Ernesto Seman Jan 2011

Calatrava Reverie, Ernesto Seman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

[Introduction To] American Indian Politics And The American Political System, Third Edition, David E. Wilkins, Heidi Kiiwetinepinesiik Stark Jan 2011

[Introduction To] American Indian Politics And The American Political System, Third Edition, David E. Wilkins, Heidi Kiiwetinepinesiik Stark

Bookshelf

Now in its third edition, American Indian Politics is the most comprehensive study written from a political science perspective that analyzes the structures and functions of indigenous governments (including Alaskan Native communities and Hawaiian Natives) and the distinctive legal and political rights these nations exercise internally, while also examining the fascinating intergovernmental relationship that exists between native nations, the states, and the federal government. The third edition contains a number of important modifications. First, it is now co-authored by Heidi Kiiwetinepinesiik Stark, who brings a spirited new voice to the study. Second, it contains ample discussion of how President Obama's …

[Introduction To] Propaganda State In Crisis: Soviet Ideology, Indoctrination, And Terror Under Stalin, 1927-1941, David Brandenberger Jan 2011

[Introduction To] Propaganda State In Crisis: Soviet Ideology, Indoctrination, And Terror Under Stalin, 1927-1941, David Brandenberger

Bookshelf

The USSR is often regarded as the world's first propaganda state. Particularly under Stalin, politically charged rhetoric and imagery dominated the press, schools, and cultural forums from literature and cinema to the fine arts. Yet party propagandists were repeatedly frustrated in their efforts to promote a coherent sense of "Soviet" identity during the interwar years. This book investigates this failure to mobilize society along communist lines by probing the secrets of the party's ideological establishment and indoctrinational system. An exposé of systemic failure within Stalin's ideological establishment, Propaganda State in Crisis ultimately rewrites the history of Soviet indoctrination and mass …

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya Jan 2011

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Members of a discipline share common research questions, values they use to address normative issues, and a set of research methods. Collectively, the features of a discipline that are common to all of its members constitute its core. Disciplines – and their specializations – can also be defined by their boundaries. However, in the case of regional science, the boundaries are fuzzy. Because regional science has been influenced by economics, geography, urban and regional planning, sociology, political science, public administration, and transportation engineering, it overlaps to a significant degree with these “parent disciplines” so that clear cut boundaries do not …

Embedded Right Where The Students Live: A Librarian In The University Residence Halls, Dallas Long Jan 2011

Embedded Right Where The Students Live: A Librarian In The University Residence Halls, Dallas Long

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The practice of an embedded librarian in university residence halls is not a new concept. Residence hall libraries and librarians have existed in various forms since the 1920s but declined in number through the decades. As embedded librarianship emerges (or re-emerges) at many colleges and universities, perhaps the idea of librarians working principally in the residence halls will be revisited and reinvigorated. My position is sometimes professionally isolating, as I have one foot in the University Library and one foot in the Student Affairs Division. As a full member of neither, I must be an active participant in my own …

Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy Jan 2011

Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy

Honors Theses

This study examined the effects leadership role and gender have on unethical decision making and the engagement in unethical behaviors. 64 undergraduate students were exposed to both hypothetical and behavioral measures that tested their willingness to engage in unethical behaviors. The results indicate a significant effect of leadership role on unethical decision making. Furthermore, goal importance and self-efficacy are driving factors in leaders' propensity to engage in unethical behaviors. These findings demonstrate the different circumstances that drive individuals who associate with different gender-roles and are placed in various leadership-roles to act in unethical ways.

Rosie The Riveter Vs. Helen The Homemaker : Advertising And The Role Of Women In America After World War Ii, Christina Pfaff Jan 2011

Rosie The Riveter Vs. Helen The Homemaker : Advertising And The Role Of Women In America After World War Ii, Christina Pfaff

Honors Theses

At the outbreak of World War II millions of servicemen left the United States to fight overseas, creating a great demand for workers in the production industries. Although the government identified women as the ideal source to fill the labor gap, a harsh stigma against the female worker existed from the Depression era. The United States government launched a recruitment campaign in collaboration with major advertising agencies and well-known artists in an effort to overcome this stigma and persuade women to join the industrial workforce. This recruitment campaign centered on the image of "Rosie the Riveter." This paper discusses the …

Presidential Leadership In Health Care Reform, Ashley G. Miles Jan 2011

Presidential Leadership In Health Care Reform, Ashley G. Miles

Honors Theses

Through conducting this research, I observed that while many leadership scholars cite persuasion, imaginary communities, follower engagement, serving as a symbol, and responding to the public's distrust of authority as effective means to meet the end of effective leadership, all of these tools were methods of influencing public opinion toward a specific end, rather than educating the public about all sides of an issue. Americans' anxieties regarding security, liberty, and choice, while complex, have roots in the public lacking a clear understanding about what impacts public policy will have on their private lives. Looking back on Clinton's and Obama's reform …

The Just And Beautiful City : Concepts Of Aesthetics And Justice In Contemporary American Urbanism, Anne Tyler Feldmann Jan 2011

The Just And Beautiful City : Concepts Of Aesthetics And Justice In Contemporary American Urbanism, Anne Tyler Feldmann

Honors Theses

his project investigates methods for addressing social injustices by reconciling equity planning with aesthetic design. The paper includes an analysis of Susan Fainstein 's criteria for the "just city," a review of environmental aesthetics theories, and an overview of theories that have reconciled justice and aesthetics previously. The project utilizes two case studies-Atlanta, Georgia's BeltLine and Norfolk, Virginia's waterfront redevelopment-to gauge the relevancy of these theories in current planning practices. Based on the findings, this paper argues that the "just city" should encompass equity, diversity, democracy, and beauty, which ought to be maximized in current and future plans for American …
